In the back of this little candy shop is a simple restaurant. I personally have never tried any of the food off the menu. We go here for the ice cream. sundaes, splits, malts, all those«old» time soda fountain type creations. The sundaes come with the hot chocolate/fudge in a shot glass on the side. The place has the original décor from when it was opened in the 30’s. The handmade chocolates in the store are also great.

Love this place. Only wish I lived closer so I could go every day for lunch. The food is perfect diner quality. I love the tomato soup with half a grilled cheese sandwich. The perfect amount of food. Hubby loved the chili. He wasn’t too full so he also had a sundae and that was good too. Everyone knows they have excellent candy, don’t miss the diner, it is the best!

This was such a neat little discovery. I’m not from Wisconsin, but my mother-in-law works not too far from this place. When I was up visiting, she took my girlfriend and I here for lunch, and it was a lovely enough experience. It has a really nice atmosphere to it, old-fashioned without being outdated. It’s a classic. There’s a candy shop in the front, and a soda fountain/restaurant in the back. My favorite was by far the meal. I ordered a grilled cheese with tomato soup, and it was so good. If Wisconsin knows how to do one thing, it’s cheese. I also got a raspberry phosphate, and it was amazing. I love that you can taste the difference when something is made the old, good way by hand. It makes all the difference. The chocolate store up front is neat too. It has long display counters and tables full of pre-wrapped confections. The chocolate is good, but it’s a bit expensive for my blood. I’m lucky that my mother-in-law spoils us by randomly bringing them home for us, because I wouldn’t spend very much here, at least not often. It’s worth going in for the nostalgia alone, but I recommend staying for a meal. The chocolate is good and handmade, but to me not all the items are worth the price. I’d definitely come back.

History comes alive. Wonderful chocolates. Show stopping sundaes and light lunch options. Just charming! Great place for traditional Christmas and Easter candies you can’t buy anywhere else. Ribbon candy and German Christmas tree wire cherries.

This is the classic soda fountain. The inside is all hard wood and decorated from the ear. The homemade chocolate is awesome, so rich, creamy and smooth. You can tell it is not store bought and re-wrapped. I had an ice cream sunday that was quite tasty. It is definitely a stop if you are looking for an ice cream, chocolate or sugar fix! Wait staff is friendly.

My husband and I arrived in Manitwoc to go antiquing(or should I say, I went antiquing, he followed me around, waiting for lunch). We walked up and down 8th street, checking all over Unilocal for the absolute best place to fill our bellies after sifting through dusty stores and damp basements. We went in to one place, they were closed. Went into another, saw a chef picking his nose, left immediately. After I was about to give up and literally drive down the road to — GASP — McDonald’s — he saw a sign«Lunches» in front of a candy store. Now, I don’t like candy. Not even a little bit. I usually don’t even like chocolate or ice cream. I realize this makes me a freak of society, so naturally I said, «Um, no.» I figured«Lunches» meant, candy sprinkled on top of more candy. But my stomach growled in protest and I gave in. When we walked inside, my eyes adjusted and suddenly everything was in black & white, I looked down and was suddenly wearing a poodle skirt, and my hubby had on a leather jacket and slicked-back hair. Ok not really, but this place looks like it found a time vortex and stayed there. The back of the narrow shop is where you are seated for full-service«Lunches.» They were AMAZING! Incredibly priced, homemade, and quite filling. I had THEBESTPOTATOSALAD I HAVEEVERHADTHEPLEASUREOFEATINGATTHISFINEESTABLISHMENT. It was a tiny portion, but I would have ordered a plate full of it. Creamy, thinly sliced potatoes, not over-loaded with too much egg, and just the right amount of spice. Heaven. I had their homemade tomato-bisque, which was surprisingly sweet, and folded in was chunks of bleu cheese. Wow. I paired it with the oh-so-classy grilled cheese and went to town. I even tried their homemade cherry lemonade and it was, too, perfect. Not too tart, not too sweet. I must have eaten magic, because afterwards I even ordered an ice-cream cone. That — never happens. If I am ever in Eastern Wisconsin, or anywhere near it, I will be coming back. **Bonus points, I saw the workers sitting in back, literally hand-packaging their chocolate bars. And hand-creasing the foil. I mean, you never know who ACTUALLY makes chocolate bars, but these are truly made«in-house.»

As others have said, it’s like going back in time. Opera Sundae was always my favorite.

My husband and I went to visit a friend in Reedsville, and she took us out to lunch here. Apparently all of the architecture is original, even the paint on the walls! I loved the vintage(in a non-hipster way) feel to everything. The old booths, the paper menus – simplicity at it’s finest! The food, of course, was excellent. Everyone else at my table got a Reuben, but I got the tuna melt, and it was perfect. The portions are just right. We didn’t buy any candy but we DID try some of the sundaes. Man, the homemade caramel and hot fudge are insanely good! They might not be the perfect smoothness or density but the flavor and texture are still delicious, and fit right in with the entire atmosphere. Loved the place. If I ever get back up in the area I would probably go here again.

How could I live a little over an hour from this place for over 15 years and not know about it? I’m a sucker for the old fashioned ice cream parlor, and I’m always on the lookout. Beerntsen’s gets everything right. Going back in time atmosphere — check! Homemade everything — check! Choice of 40 plus sundaes — check! Great price — check! Good service — check! Loved the raspberry sundae. The homemade marshmallow fluff is out of this world! I will be back often.

Every spring around Easter, my husband and I take a weekend getaway up to Manitowoc. Every single time I insist on stopping in here to stock up on my Easter candy cravings. Once you walk in, you literally are stepping back in time. They make all the Easter candy from scratch. Anything you want: maple, marshmallow, coconut — they have everything and it’s all DELICIOUS. You might pay a little bit more, but it’s SO worth it. And if you walk around the town for a little bit, as an extra added bonus you’ll wind up walking those calories off. The gals who work behind the counter are super friendly and offer helpful suggestions if you’re wavering. Delicious! See ya next spring, Beernsten!

When you walk into Beerntsen’s you feel transported back in time. The white and red striped awning and old fashioned wooden boths give you a feeling of the 30’s. The chocolates are divine and the ambiance whimsical. I can’t comment on the food on the food or ice cream, but certainly a must stop when in Manitowoc.

A classic candy shop with ice cream and some lunch fare. All the candy is home made and quite good. It still reminds me of when I visited Manitowoc as a kid. Especially the Angel Food chocolate. Damn good chocolate malts, too!

I stopped in for lunch while visiting my mother in Manitowoc and was more then pleasantly surprised. I got the Turkey Pesto gourmet sandwich and it was delicious! Perfect even. And of course, I saved room for the ice-cream. You can never go wrong with ice-cream! The atmosphere was amazing. Our waitress was wonderful. And the free samples of candy as we were walking out were delicious! I loved every second spent inside.

What a find! We stopped on a whim and this historic space retains beautiful atmosphere. I felt like I could almost step back in time and see gentlemen hanging their hats and trench coats from the elegant hooks atop the gorgeous wooden booths. We took a seat at one of said booths and I ordered a half ham salad sandwich on marble rye, a cup of tomato bisque and a chocolate malt. The malt was so thick I couldn’t get it through the straw at first, but had just the right amount of malt flavoring. The ham salad was delicious and the bread was nicely toasted but not basted in any butter or oil, which was fine. If you’re not up for a meal or some ice cream, you can also stop by and pick up some of their beautiful looking chocolates and candies.
