Cortez Martial Arts Academy

This review is based on my one and only visit to this place.
I had been looking for a new place for my son in our new town to continue his Martial Arts training. Based on Unilocal reviews, this place was on on my list to visit.
One day, in the middle of the week in the early evening, I needed to go to Orchard Supply and to my surprised I noticed that this Academy was in the same business park, so excited I walked there to obtain information. In all honesty I was expecting for them to give me an appointment to come back and sit down with someone and learn more about their program, prices etc. To my disappointment, upon my entrance to this place, the one and only instructor there that day actually ‘abandoned’ his group/​class to come talk to me, he took his time with me, I was uneasy feeling my visit to this place was cause for these students to lose their instruction =/​Mr, Cortez however, kept informing me about their academy and took all his time to try and gain my interest. But this Academy lost my business, ALL I could think about was that if I enrolled my son here, every time he had a class and a new prospect entered their studio, he (my boy) would miss out on instruction time because NEW clients are SO IMPORTANT to them that they dont pay attention to those that have already given them their business by signing a contract with them.
Let me add that Mr, Cortez did ask a student to take over the group =/​but it was obvious the student asked to lead had no idea of what to do.
Had Mr. Cortez greeted me and explained he was the only one there and offered me an appt. to return and meet with someone I would have gladly done so and would have enrolled my son in their Academy.

I have two boys, both diagnosed with autism, that are going here, doing well, learning and participating is a no pressure, non-​judgmental environment. They are learning «the gentle art» of Jiu Jitsu and are, much to my surprise, picking up on it pretty quickly. The coaches, Jason and Javier, are both really good with our kids. I do not know if they have any formal training in working with special needs kids but they are super patient and have put together a schedule of classes, separate from their regular schedule, to give special needs kids the environment and attention that they need.
Keep in mind they are a martial arts school, and they may eventually rope you into a contract, like any other martial arts school does, so I would be wary of the length of the contract — especially if you are not sure if you or your son or daughter will thrive in martial arts; but it is working for our kids. We were part of a test run of the special needs class, so our boys did get a few weeks of free classes before we were hit with a contract, but we did have to eventually commit to a contract. At that point though, it was a no-​brainer for us.

My Son has been going to Cortez Martial Arts Academy for about 3 years now. They brought so much out of my son. They are very supportive of people who are new to the Arts. I highly recommend it.

I really shouldn’t give a star, but maybe someone will read it. I contacted them about three mos ago via groupon and explained about specials needs daughter and more info on if they work with them. I never heard back and thought it was a groupon problem. I found their website about a mos and once more another email sent with same info, no response. Two weeks ago, even before the holidays to give me a quick call would seem easy. I asked for info again and of course explained do they work with special needs kids. I’m tired of trying. They seem to have two Unilocal review but maybe they are happy because Cortez doesn’t work with special needs and caters to other children. What a shame. At least give the courtesy of a response, ok so maybe your response is we don’t work with special needs but geez an email or call would be nice. I guess that’s too much to ask.
4pm received call and I told Lili that it was nice that I had to write a review on Unilocal to get a response.
Later she messages and said it was funny she got no email and if I did email why’d I take so long. She couldn’t find my email (pic below) but it’s funny that I would wait so long to contact them back if I didn’t get response after that long. I told her I went into into ER the next day for emergency surgery. I ask (yes, sarcastically) if I should have done it immediately after surgery, the next day, the week I was in the Hosp or when I came home to recover. I guess that was funny too bc she yes to all those. As you can see I sent an email but to Lili this entire story is funny to her and that she does not like Unilocal bc of its inaccuracies because she replied to all emails and I never sent one and even though I had emergency surgery it was my duty to follow up after attempting 3 times.
Thx Lili, I will follow your advice and look elsewhere! Contacting a company 3xs wasn’t enough so let’s see if other businesses feel the same! Oh geez my fault, i should schedule er surgeries around a company and response times.

This review is long over due, but here goes.
This is a great place to train and has so many great programs. I registered for the Charles Gracie Brazilian Jujitsu class and thinking that I was in really good shape and had a year under my belt of BJJ at some other school I wont mention, went in for a trial.
I ended up going outside and throwing up half way through the class. When I returned the next week one really nice classmate walked up and shook my hand and said you came back. Then he told me a lot of people don’t but everyone here has done the same thing. I felt welcomed to the family and family is just what this place is.
I was given an extended free time to train and see if this was the right place. That is what really sets Cortez Martial arts apart in my mind. There is a boxing class, a MMA class and a Kempo class. I have had the opportunity to see each program up close and everything they do is a class act.
I was privileged to attend a Royce Gracie Seminar at Cortez Martial arts with my son. This was the single greatest moment of my martial arts life. Thank you to Jason for all of your support and passion for what you do.

My 9 year old son and his cousins have been enrolled here for almost two years now. It’s an excellent dojo and very family friendly. They even offer before amd after school daycare (rides to schools and pickups) which really helps with parents busy schedules. I highly recommend this Martial Arts School. Check them out if you’re in the town of Manteca, CA.

The Cortez Dojo of Mitose’s Kosho-​Ryu Karate Kenpo Academy is an excellent martial arts school located in the heart of downtown Manteca. Sensei Jason Cortez takes his art very seriously and always aims to imbue his students with his passion and dedication to the art. In addition to regular classes, Sensei Jason and his wife Lily also host weekly open sparring sessions and occasional women’s self-​defense courses, and they organize the successful Manteca Meltdown martial arts tournaments.
All four of my sons have benefitted greatly from the Cortez dojo, and I wholeheartedly recommend you visit them in downtown Manteca.
