Popped in for a relaxed lunch after business in Marion. Everyone, waitress, bartender and patrons were personably chatty making the atmosphere perfect for what I was looking for. The Route 66 sign was testament to the high school graduation of the owner from Marion High. I ate the ‘special’ of grilled ham on a croissant, an enhanced side salad and today’s side created by the chef. A couple of spiced holiday ales and I was a happy camper. Such local ‘joints’ are the small town oases of Americana that I cherish as I travel.

Folkies is a warm, friendly bar in downtown Marion. We came there for lunch and ordered sandwiches. I had a cheeseburger with all the fixings and French fries. A nice touch was that the cook toasts the bun on the grill which makes it crispy and tasty. Fries were crispy on the outside and just right. My lunch date had a grilled tenderloin sandwich with fries and a beer, which he really liked. It’s a full bar with typical bar fare and obviously has been here for awhile with paneling. The staff and owner are friendly and do not seem to know a stranger. They have TVs and a jukebox, plus a daily password for internet. Summertime has outdoor seating and they’re right in the heart of the monthly First Fridays street fair so it would be a good place to stop in for a bite and to listen to the bands. Would be glad to go back! P. S. Someone said cash only but they now accept credit cards.

It’s a small bar with BIG character in Downtown Marion. The lunch specials are always amazing! As the menu says, «it’s always more fun to eat in a tavern than drink in a restaurant!» Play Cubs cornhole out back in the summer.
