I have the fondest memories of shogun from my childhood. Since leaving Texas, I’ve had my share of teppanyaki across the country. This place really sits near the top when it comes to flavor. I can actually taste what I’m eating, and it’s delicious! The prices are as reasonable as you’ll find anywhere for a Japanese steakhouse. Get the dinner for two and try the basa(ask for teriyaki, my personal favorite)! And it seems they’ve really remodeled the place as well recently…

I have no idea how long we have been going to Shogun — 20,30 years? We stopped going because the place smelled like wet dog for quite a while, but then they finally got shut down & remodeled so when my son said lets go to Shogun last week, we agreed. We had so many fond memories of the place. We would take the kids for special occasions like Birthdays, «A» report cards, Anniversaries, etc. Well, after last week, I will never, ever go back. Yes, they have pulled up the stinky carpet & cleaned up what I could see but the service & staff are outrageous. First thing — my husband dropped me off while he parked. I entered the restaurant alone and the owner’s wife greeted me with«are you alone?». When I said no there will be 4 of us, she said«where are they I cannot sit you without everyone here». #1 I have a back problem & have trouble standing for long & # 2 she did not even say hello, welcome to shogun, & #3 the place was almost empty. Anyway, when the rest of the group arrived she asked who was paying the bill. Maybe she was kidding, but she didn’t smile or look like she joking, so I said«I have no idea». Then I did something I have never done before & asked her if she wanted us to eat there or leave & she pointed to the door. When I turned around to leave, she«jokingly said that my son should pay because he was big & strong» & pretended to have pointed to him. Unfortunately it was late & the rest of the party were too hungry to leave so we stayed. We got our drinks quickly, but our meal took forever. They didn’t even start to cook until another party arrived & filled out the communal cooking table. The food was good, not great, but the experience has always been the attraction. I am sorry to see this place go downhill, but it is entirely the owner’s fault.

I have many fond memories of coming to Shogun in the 90s and early 2000s. Then, it was a busy, bright place with a sushi bar and entertaining, friendly chefs. It was so busy they would have to open their back room(which was also nice). The ambiance back then was incredible, and they had Japanese art lining the walls and I felt like I was in Japan. Now when you go to Shogun, you come to a dark, empty place. You get horrible service and chefs who don’t entertain, and aren’t friendly. They don’t converse with you unless you know Spanish. Ah, the memories of the chef throwing the shrimp at you with the spatula and getting to catch it, or the onion volcanoes. All gone. The cleanliness of this place is disgusting. According to the article at , the owner blames his staff for the state of cleanliness. My only guess is that this guy is paying extremely low wages like $ 1/hr for this kind of filth. The food tastes pretty good, but there is a lot of butter and oil in it. After you leave Shogun, be prepared to take a shower and wash your clothes because the smoke sticks to you. Here’s to hoping the old Shogun returns one day.

Whoa! I won’t dispute they have decent food but the atmosphere needs work. Just looking around, you feel dirty. My gripe is, if I can see the filth, can’t they? You want good teppanyaki? Go to Hayashi.

I have literally been eating at shogun for 20 years. Every time I got straight As or had a birthday, we’d go to shogun. And it was delicious. The clear mushroom soup, the special salad dressing, steak and chicken and shrimp. Tantalizing and addictive, a reward for a job well done and the beginning of rewarding myself with food. It was never the cleanest place but the food was so good we could overlook. Fast forward to 2010, 60 food demerits and a shut down later, and they’ve cleaned the place up. Except for the bathrooms which resemble that of a gas station. Apparently the grease stained ceiling and the rotty carpet contributed to the food because what we had was anything but spectacular. It was okay… but weirdly bland, The server was decent but our«chef», Julio, couldn’t have cared less. He was a total robot — cooked it, left it, then GOTONHISCELL during cleanup while we were sitting right there. Shogun needs to train their chefs, lower their prices(6.95 for franzia? REALLY?) and rediscover their goodness because as it is now, I’m certainly not going back. RIPOG Shogun.

I’ll make it short and sweet. The food is great, the restaurant is disgusting. If you don’t mind eating in dirty but delicious restaurants, then this is your place. If not, then go to PF Chang’s where you can get the same ol’ same ol’ chinese.

two words: VOLCANODRINK only reason i been here a couple of times is to have this drink served in a round bowl with a shot glass of EVERCLEAR in the middle. they set the everclear on fire when it is served, and your like woo woo stuff! so you drink the mix drink around the bowl and when you’re done, you take the shot in the middle!

Shogun has been shut down by the health inspector for 60 demerits, which is apparently a record high. I now know why I almost always had to run to the bathroom after eating here. Too bad, still love this place… Glad I never got really bad food poisoning… RIP.

Minus 4 stars because it smells like wet puppies and is in serious disrepair HOWEVER…the food & service are both very good and they are remodeling, so I’ll tack a star back on for those efforts to give them a total of 2 stars! I’m hoping their remodel will really help them improve on their ambiance and general aroma!

I absolutely love this place! The food is amazing. I moved to Austin a couple of years ago, and I tried every Japanese style steak house there, and none of them compared to the wonderful flavors Shogun has. The only thing that could possibly take away a star is that the carpet and restaurant is not always the cleanest. My thinking though, is that when they bring the food out and cook it in front of you, what could really go wrong. You’re watching how your food is prepared, so you know what goes into it. The food is AMAZING!
