Old motel that was clean and tidy for its age and cheap. Friendly Indian manager. About 30 minutes walk from Amtrak. That’s the good part. The bad part is that it’s located in a really lousy part of town. After I checked in I had one shady guy follow me to my room offering me crack or a girl for the night. Apparently he had nine sisters to choose from. There was no one else but me staying at the motel when I went to bed. This made me a bit nervous but I’m pretty adventurous so I went with it. Fortunately one of the chairs in the room wedged perfectly under the front doorknob for extra security. Perhaps it was designed this way? After I went to sleep some other people checked in at the room right next to me. Why do motel owners put someone right next to you when the entire motel is empty? The folks next to me stayed up late and were loud but I figured they would keep the shady folks away or at least keep the attention away from me. And that was what happened. I put my earplugs in and went to sleep only to be awoken later by some loud noises outside of who knows what. At least the bed was somewhat comfortable. In the morning another guy offered me drugs as I was leaving. I kinda feel sorry for some of these folks who get into these businesses. The manager was certainly friendly enough and I’m sure he doesn’t like these types of low-life’s hanging out on his property. He seems to do the best he can to keep the rooms clean and neat. Nevertheless I can’t recommend this place unless you are as hard up as the shady-ass folks hanging around the motel at night.

Old roadside motel, foreign owner whose English is not very good, but overall the motel is very nice. It’s clean, well maintained, and very inexpensive. I talked to the owner when I arrived and he tried to be very helpful, but he’s not knowledgable of the area. I don’t think he gets out much. The location is very, very unsafe. You don’t want to walk around at night. Locals tell me the prostitutes and drug dealers stay at this motel, but I stayed 4 nights and only saw travelers that needed a bed and a shower. That’s what this place is — bed and shower. Rating: 5 stars for cleanliness, 3 stars for amenities, and 1 star for location.

Okay this motel is about 10 blocks from the Merced Amtrak Station in Merced. I called the motel at 12:20 pm 9÷11÷2014 today. A man answers the phone. Not Slumber Motel how may I help you but, hello and unsure of himself. That and he speaks broken English. I then ask him how far the Merced Train Station is so I can be sure that the Merced Amtrak is actually 9 blocks away and the map I am look at is correct. His answer, ‘I don’t know’. Let me understand this, he runs a motel and has no idea how far the Amtrak Station is from his motel. That would seem pretty important if you have others traveling to Merced for a stop overnight and your the closest to the station. I then ask again does he know where the station is? No answer. I then explain to him it seems important to me that a motel would want to take every step to know and understand the guests that stay there. The response, he hung up. I would stay as far away from the Slumber Motel as you can. A hotelier who is not able to talk to potential guests is not very good. I wonder what Gordon Ramsey would say if this motel were on HOTELHELL.

I’m giving the Slumber 4 stars because it deserves more credit than it gets. First of all, you get a mini fridge, which is very rare for a «one star hotel» these days. The room was very clean and oh so much nicer than the Motel Sixes we stayed at earlier in our trip. I am now a firm believer in «mom and pop» hotels after this trip!
