I went in for a haircut, asking for a very short trim, maybe ½ an inch and some layers and bangs cut and my hair dyed. I tried to request a higher level student or instructor but when I got there I was simply assigned a random student. She clearly had never worked on a human head before and took hours to dye my hair and was absolutely brutal and painful with her technique. I dont know here name but she had a head scarf and was very rude. and that was the good part! when it was time to cut my hair, she simply hacked off about TENINCHES. yes, i have waist length hair and when i turned around in the chair about a foot had been cut off, I nearly dropped dead. Her explanation was that while trimming it, it «looked weird» in the back. I called over the instructor to complain but by this point it was so late they were technically closed. I was very upset at this point, she was indifferent and indicated that students make mistakes. It was not even straightly cut so she fixed it for a couple of minutes. I was pretty much speechless and what was done was done so I went to pay. I mentioned it to them at the desk and they took 10% off. They said I could come back the next day to «talk to someone about what happened» but I was moving the next morning out of the state so I just left. There was no apology of any sort. I should have walked out without paying and made a major complaint. This was in late June 2012. So yes, if you want a foot of your hair hacked off, feel free. Meanwhile I will spend the next ten years trying to grow it back and wishing I never set foot there.

I have been serviced… by the Aveda school since 02 or 03 — whenever it first opened. I have had haircuts, colors, manicures, pedicures, and once or twice a wax of the brow. I have only had one bad experience since then, and now, years later, I I hardly remember why(probably a waiting issue). They are students, so don’t expect too much, but I have always had good cuts, color, pedis and wax. Thing is, they cannot«cut» cuticle, or use credi knives on your feet, and they dont do things like bikinis *but then, you WANT a professional for that anyway). I look forward to my next visit, butI don’t use them exclusively. True, they have to «suggest» the products they they use on you, and they are at full retail, but I politely decline them. Lately they give you 20% off when you book your service in advance. So, BOOKINADVANCE and save some money!!!

If you’re half-breathing, you know we’re in the midst of a horrible financial depression. Many are scaling back on services they were happy to spend on services: mani/pedis, frequent hair trims, color, etc. I cannot spend $ 60 on a pedicure, regardless on how bad mt toes look these days. That’s where Aveda Institute comes in. For 1⁄3 the cost, you can receive a beauty treatment(no massages — no happy endings!), tip generously, and walk away feeling proud you saved some greenbacks. While you won’t have a longstanding relationship with a service provider(they do eventually graduate), you’ll have great looking hair and nails while you pound the pavement for a new job or sugar daddy or mommy. If nothing else, you’ll look good getting the newspaper in the morning… unless you dropped the subscription.

I love to get here when I can. It can be pretty tough to get an appointment for a cut, so make sure to do it in advance. Since it’s a school, they’ve got supervisors making sure everything comes out okay and helping the students out. It’s nothing fancy, but that doesn’t bother me if I’m getting a deal on my hair. I think it’s pretty annoying when they have to take you downstairs to try to push Aveda products on you, especially when the person doing it doesn’t really care if you buy anything and aren’t really choosing things that are relevant to you as a person. If I want to buy Aveda stuff, I will. I’ve had a pedicure there which was also just fine, as well as an eyebrow wax which was good. If you’re low on cash, then this is your place. Not the place to go to feel calm and pampered because they’re BUSY and there’s lots of activity. They were kind of dismissive… it was kind of weird, they hardly acknowledged that I was a person rather than a head of hair to practice on, but I am cutting them some slack since it’s a school. Definitely check it out.
