I visited the Mosswood Farm Store with my folks, on the way back from Thanksgiving at the beach in the Florida panhandle. Originally, I had planned on meeting my folks there at the tail end of a bicycle tour through the Ocala National Forest — I hopped on Unilocal to find a place to meet them, Micanopy was ideally located, Mosswood had the best reviews. Done. Long story short, Frontier Airlines temporarily lost my bike, so I didn’t get to go on the bike trip. But! We did still stop here on the drive back, and I’m so glad we did. In Colorado, where I live now, Artisinal Organic Fair Trade Single-Origin pour-over coffee served by baristas so hip it makes your Dad Jeans hurt isn’t hard to find. Local spots like these, despite the sometimes too-cool-for-school digs, have become my new havens for reading, doodling, and thinkin’. MFS sheds the pretense and has the same delicious hipster coffee I’ve grown to love(Artisinal Organic Fair Trade Single Origin pour-overs actually do taste much better than 4-hour old Folgers from a machine that hasn’t been cleaned in 10 years, go figure) in a delightful old house, tucked back in the plentiful oaks and Spanish moss. Though I didn’t catch his name, the pony-tailed barista was very friendly and we chatted for a while. His friendly demeanor and disarming accent made me actually miss The South for a moment :) So, MWF is a fantastic little gem in Micanopy that I’d hang out at all the time if I lived there. Picked up 3 bags of beans from Strongtree roasters in Gainesville, 2 for gifts, and one I’m enjoying now — very good and giving me a new appreciation for darker roasts. Incidentally, I’m planning a «replacement» bike tour for the one I missed, hopefully I’ll have time to take a detour to Mosswood!

This place is a gem tucked in Micanopy. We tried several of the bread and pastry and they were all delicious! I especially love the savory turnovers, if you come in the morning, they are warm and fresh. Don’t forget to check out their garden in the back. It’s good knowing that you can let the kids wander around the garden free of chemicals. There’s also a neat wood-burning oven in the back, I’m guessing that’s where the bread and pastry are made.

OMG, the brownies are phenomenal! We tried the peanut butter brownie and it was super moist. Cute little stop with lots of organic items and local jams and soaps. Very clean and friendly staff.

This place is such a find! The best capuccino in the area and delicious pastries. A small quaint little spot. I love to hang out in the store or the back garden and enjoy a coffee. Everything here is made here and made with love. What a gem.

As traditions dictate we must stop here on our way to Gainesville to visit our college boy. The store front is very inviting to be sat in with a lovly bistro set to to enjoy the fine baked goods, coffees etc that are awaiting you inside. Inside has changed in the past four years to more of a counter with bright showcases of inviting guava turnovers and lentil puff pastry that the country store .It’s progress and delightfully they now have ice cream. In florida this is a must food. We ordered up mostly savory filled pastries, but a few chocolate brownies and guava tarts leapt in the bag!.Coffee for us and natural Izze soda for my other son and off we were to the back porch to wait for our tarts to heat. the gardens in the back are full of butterfly friendly plants as well as neat oven. Sitting back enjoying brunch-this is a place that makes you happy you live here. Take your time —

I am so spoiled to have this store 20 minutes away from my house! An incredible gem in the historic town of Micanopy. Located in a great little historic home, with a comfy porch and some seating in the back. The food and coffee are the real stars here, with a bakery case full of delicious sweet and savory items, as well as a full espresso bar with the usual options for top-notch coffee. And virtually everything is organic and locally sourced. Too many«must-have» items to mention. Safe to say that you won’t go wrong with a savory stuffed turnover and one(or a dozen…) of their homemade double chocolate brownies. The ideal spot to unwind after a day of work/travel, or spend an hour or two on a lazy weekend morning. Might be a little difficult for some folks to find as it’s a few blocks north of the main shopping area, but well worth the effort!

Staff was friendly and the coffee(chai latte) was good. I also got a Hello Dollie which I split with my sister. It was really rich so I’m glad I did. Also got a loaf of the the rosemary bread to take home. The atmosphere was very homey and all of the for sale items were pretty cute. Very old time charm.

I love visiting this place, mainly for the amazing café treats that come out of the kitchen. The store itself is a history lesson in pre-industrial ways of living, so many healthy cookbooks, some very hard to find elsewhere. If you love baking, knitting sewing or just treating yourself to organic bath goods and herbs, this is the place for you. Quaint and charming but not hokey, this is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Did I mention the café? Sublime pastries(like chess squares and these Argentinian(?) cream filled things in substantial portions, AND savory treats like quiches and tortes(sp?) with fresh from the garden veggies and local cheeses. And locally roasted coffees, local jam and honey. Plus fancy coffee, natural sodas and kombucha. Are you getting the picture here? It’s Michael Pollan and Joel Salatin’s lovechild. A visit to Micanopy for us always involves a trip to Mosswood. There is a playground across the street with a fire station next door, and the Micanopy Historical Society’s museum is just a few steps down the road. Do yourself a favor, make the trip, you will have the pants charmed off you! I *Heart* this place

Adding to the charm of Micanopy, Florida, is Mosswood Farm Store. It’s undergone some changes since it’s opening. I do miss the original form of the store. It looked like a home with rocking chairs sitting in front of a fireplace, a room with some knitting, sewing, and handmade items, and then the herbal hallway and the bathroom with all the handmade and organic soaps and other bath products. In the back was the kitchen, churning out the best desserts and breads. Even though the store has opened up into more of a coffee shop that happens to have some organic and sustainable living products, it still has that very welcoming feeling. The desserts are the best around. Divine! The atmosphere is still happy and homey. Go out back and find a lovely garden and sitting area. Beware, happy cats roam about waiting for you to pet them and show some love. Mosswood Farm Store is a fantastic addition to Micanopy. It’s old Southern flavor pays homage to the general area; and it’s sustainability and green living ideas and products just reinforce the love of keeping a beautiful area alive.

Make sure to check out the farmers market in the back– there’s a guy who sells amazing kombucha and Pickled radishes and kimchi. The store is very interesting and fun to look at but it is a bit pricy. I would love to go back and buy books!

Mosswood Farm Store is a small, I would dare say«quaint», retailer in an old Cracker-style house in Micanopy, just as you enter town off US441. The theme of the store is a variety of items all somehow connected to organic farming, small-scale production, slow foods, and associated concepts. That is to say, you’ll find wonderful, homemade baked goods here including breads, brownies, and chocolate bread puddings, plus books on running a small organic farm or cooking vegan foods. You’ll also find handmade soaps, local honeys and jams, and some cloth goods. But the books and the baked goods seem to be the main attraction, especially the baked goodies. There’s some bluegrass music recordings for sale too, and other odds and ends. If you desire a book on traditional blacksmithing, raising rabbits in your backyard for fun and profit, or other issues of small, earth-friendly farming, you’ll find it here. The ladies running this operation are sweet and friendly, and my only complaint is that while known for their local honey, recently when I’ve been there they only have a small selection of alarmingly large jars and jugs of honey. Ward’s Supermarket actually has a better selection. I try not to buy large amounts of honey because it often goes to crystrals before I can use it up and unless you somehow use absurd amounts of honey(such as you run a restaurant or own a pet bear), I would suggest you follow the same approach. I would like to see Mosswood offer even more in the way of books, too, but I understand they can only carry what they feel they’ll sell. Still it would be nice to see more volumes on Florida history and ecology here: I think things like Archie Carr’s «A Naturalist in Florida» would sell better than a book on blacksmithing for them, too. That said, I am really glad they’re here and doing what they do: their baked goods are quickly establishing a strong following in the region and their books and other offerings are certainly unique.

I adore this place. i adore that it’s under the trees, that there’s a brick oven baking bread in the backyard, i adore that there are fat kitties on the back porch, i adore the teeny tiny farmer’s market on Sunday afternoons. I came twice in the span of one week since it was my bi-annual trip home. i met a farmer who was selling lard from acorn-fed hogs and i HAD to have some and then come back the following weekend to buy more. plus, i wanted to see the brick oven in action. we also met a farmer who was selling smoked wild hog straight from the Ocala National Forest. damn, folks, that’s worth the trip, let me tell you. he was also selling smoked mullet and shrimp. other goodies from the store itself include delicious chess squares, pasteis de nata, wild yellow plum jam, and raw butter and milk.

So here it’s Florida-Georgia weekend and I’m thinking that it’d be safe to venture over to Micanopy to try out Mosswood … pretty day, nice ride in the country, good times, right? Ho ho. First off, if you’re like me and you’re an absolute putz with directions in unfamiliar locales, make sure you bring directions along when you come because apparently NOONE in Micanopy knows this place exists. Sure, it’s right off 441 and judging by the map, seemingly simple to find – but I couldn’t find it and no one I asked had even heard of it. All the same, Micanopy’s a small place and I figured if I went over to the festival area, someone would have heard of it. And voila, I parked under a tree and there it was! The building looks like a small historic house, and as soon as you step inside, you’ll be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of memorabilia available in the front room. I, however, was already distracted by a table of goodies directly in front of the store and proceeded straight to the back to pay for yummy fattening pastries. And then I saw that they sell Reed’s Ginger Ale. Be still, my diabetes-ridden, cholesterol-laced heart! I ended up with four assorted pastries(two brownies, one nutty and one plain, a crème brûlée puff thingie, and a cream cheese/burnt cinnamon slice) and two bottles of the Reed’s(original and extra ginger) for less than $ 14. Not bad, considering that an equivalent haul from Uppercrust would have probably been at least $ 2 more. I ate the crème brûlée puff on the spot and loved it – the custard filling was nicely seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg and tasted like a delicious treat that you would expect to get around Christmastime. I liked the cream cheese pastry as well, though it wasn’t too far removed from your average danish. The nutty brownie was my least favorite item – it was just plain and drab to my tastes and I gave it to a more appreciative friend. I liked the plain brownie better than this – it was a dense, rich block of chocolate, just the way I like it! But the Reed’s … mmmm. THIS stuff is ginger ale. Forget Canada Dry and Vernor’s. Tasty on its own and makes an excellent Dark N’ Stormy! The official Dark N’ Stormy recipe: — Pour 1.5 oz. Gosling’s Black Seal Rum into an 8 oz. glass. — Fill glass with ginger beer. — Pass out!

It feels as though by making a purchase here that I am simultaneously supporting the Democratic Party, Alice Waters, Michael Pollan and The Khmer Rouge! Once you get *passed* the Father-Knows-Best paternalizing literature and signage(with which the front rooms are littered) and into the backroom where the display case and bread baskets present their baked offerings; you think: «It looks good. Can their misguided ideology be forgiven?» I ordered the Goat Cheese and Caramelized Onion Tart: almost perfection! The goat cheese was of good quality but the star was the pastry dough; light and flaky with the lightest crunch and wispy crumb. Sheer beauty! The price makes this more of a special occasion treat than an everyday stop-by-to-get-the-bread-for-dinner type of thing. It is expensive but that’s the price of good ingredients which, by the way, are handled consummately. I can’t speak for their house-made confitures(jams/jellies/conserves) or pickling, but if the same level of awareness go into the production of those they should be equally good. Stand-by for THAT review. If you’re in Micanopy this place is a must visit; even if for a bite of something small just to try. I get this feeling that I’ll be back on payday weekends!

I happened into this organic bakery, with it’s jellies /jams /honeys /essential oils /handmade soaps /organic spices /popcorns /and handmade violins at the advice of a friend. What a perfect find, I can’t thank her enough, this place and its owners are top notch. I stood and talked to the owner, Morgan for about an hour, as if we’d known each other for years. That’s the kind of vibe she emits. She’s not only a fabulous organic baker, but she exudes the perfect customer service friendly spirit. An entrepreneur extraordinaire and she never meets a stranger. I was fascinated by her array of organic products, books on living clean and green, and handmade crafts. I purchased a few pasties, jellies and a loaf of her Parmesan olive bread. That bread was yummy. I’m sure I didn’t see it all, but if you are traveling up or down highway 441, it’s worth the slight detour. You’ll no doubt see things I didn’t, or just drop in for nothing else but a delightful chat with Morgan and the locals that hang there. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a more neighborly, kindly, amiable, cordial business. . That, I think should just about cover it.
