First time coming here for a family celebration and boy was I not disappointed. By far the best sushi place I have been to in the area. It is a relatively small spot but that only makes it that much more desirable to get a table. Keep in mind that it’s BYOB so if you want to drink, head to the liquor store around the block. For starters we had the beef negimaki, rock shrimp and soft shell crab tempura all appetizers were unbelievable. The rock shrimp stole the show but the other two are quite the treat to start off with. We then got our customary garden salads and miso soups which are a pleasure as always. My brother and I split the love boat for 2 and I would be lying if I said that it wasn’t the best sushi I have ever had in my life. To top it off we had the tempura ice cream which was a great nightcap. All in all, this is a must for any sushi snobs and I give it two thumbs up all the way around. This will now be my go to sushi place.

I’ve been here a few times because it seems to very popular in the area. The sushi is very average to me and it’s not like the prices are anything special. Go a few lights down the road for better sushi in the Red Bank area.

Sono is the solid go to sushi place for us. Owners are always there to address your every need and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. I have tried just about every roll on the menu and have been very satisfied. Consistent and delicious. What more could one ask for?

I have been going to Sono for at least 10 years if not more. It is easily the best sushi in the area, and the quality has never dipped in any of the years I have been going here and prices have always been fair. The management is incredibly friendly and they always remember you when you go back. Whenever I am home from school, I always make sure to stop in at least once. Their rolls are inventive and delicious. If you are looking for some interesting rolls, I love the Incredible Roll, Holmdel Roll, Red Bank Roll, and Sono Delight. Their pink seaweed rolls(Juliet and Pink Lady) as well as their roll with no rice(Romeo) are delicious as well. The Romeo Roll is a nice change from sashimi when you are wanting to go without rice. Another good option for less rice is the Salmon Don, which features salmon sashimi on a bed of seasoned rice. This way you eat as little(or as much) rice as you want.

Ordered takeout from here after reading the good Unilocal reviews and wanting to give this place a shot. Overall the food wasn’t bad. I thought the coloring of the fish was off, and some of the rolls needed sauce, however it wasn’t terrible. Is this my favorite place in Monmouth County… Probably not, however it’s decent and the prices are good.

The sushi made by sono is great. I have been there at least 10 times over the past year or so. As a sashimi lover, I have never had a bad experience. The restaurant is BYOB, so do not forget to grab your favorite bottle before going there. If you forget, there is a liquor store within walking distance on the same strip mall.

Best sushi around. I give in on this one. I really like the place. The sushi is fresh and the people who work there are always pleasant and helpful. I go here for lunch a couple times a month. Last Saturday I had the pleasure of taking my 17 yo daughter and her friend to a Wiz Khalifa and Fall Out Boy concert at the Arts Center.(another story for another forum) I learned I had never taken my daughter to sushi. Problem solved. I ordered the sushi dinner for 3 and added some additional rolls. As usual, everything was fantastic. It was a lot of food and I am happy to say, my daughter ate everything, enjoyed it although I didn’t exactly tell her what everything was before she ate it. The eel might have been more than she needed to know.

love this spot. cute interior very basic wood furniture and no nonsense setup. tables give enough room to spread out and the place was clean. we got 2 sushi/sashimi meals for 2 as there were 4 of us, and 2 appetizers. the soup was bland, interesting to include crab stick in the clear soup. beef sashimi was PHENOMENAL. loved the sauce and it was a good size. tempura was typical. the fish was super fresh. the rolls were put together nicely and we were full at the end. also big plus was the service! friendly waitresses and always refilled the waters! warmed the sake for us and provided appropriate stemware for our wine. I will definitely be back :)

Needed a place to go for dinner and went to trusty Unilocal for a suggestion and found this place. I am incredibly picky when it comes to sushi and tend to shy away from new places. I am so glad I did in this case! The food was delicious. My friend and I shared several rolls and weren’t disappointed by a single one. The fish was very fresh and didn’t have that super fishy taste that you sometimes find in places that aren’t serving high quality fish. Though I loved everything I had(they had a spicy scallop roll, which you can’t find everywhere, that had just the right amount of spicy sauce but not so much that it overpowered the scallops), I highly recommend the White Swan roll. Our server overheard our conversation and recommended it and it was amazing!

Had the Phoenix Roll, Hot Crunchy Roll, Gyoza and House Special soup. Everything was delicious. Place is BYOB so dinner was about $ 40(tip included) plus a few bottles of beer we had at the house. Not a bad price for dinner on Saturday night. Got there around 6:15 on a Saturday night. Place was hopping but we were seated right away. By the time we left there were people waiting for tables. Have lived in town for 9 years but never heard of this place. Not sure how that happened but thank you to Unilocal for finding us a great sushi place blocks from our house!

We tried this place last night, thanks to the wonderful Unilocal reviews. It is a very cute restaurant located in a strip mall. We came around 6pm, and by the time we were leaving(around 7pm), it was packed! People were waiting in the doorway. We both started with soup. I had the dumpling soup –if you like scallions and dumplings this is the soup for you! Mine came with 4 tasty dumplings. My husband and I split three rolls, spicy tuna, crunchy crab, and an eel roll. All were delicious and affordable. The service was great as well.

Had their Sushi Lunch Special with colleagues yesterday. Overall was OK. May be it had to do with my mood, but nothing stood out — price, décor, ambiance, service, food. Nothing to complain about either except may be the service — the waitress never once refilled my tea cup or ask me how was everything. For that I round down my 3.5 star rating to 3. The $ 12 Sushi Lunch Special came with one 6 piece tuna avocado roll, one 6 piece cucumber avocado roll, and 4 pieces of sushi(1 tuna, 1 salmon, and 2 halibut/white fish) — and of course the standard salad with ginger dressing and a bowl of miso soup. The miso soup was hot with plenty of tofu, but the ginger dressing was rather salty. They gave a good amount of wasabi That’s rather unusual because I normally have to ask for extra wasabi in any Japanese restaurant. I don’t mind coming back for another lunch, but if I don’t, I won’t miss a thing.

So if you’re reading this review because you got bored of food options in this area or you absolutely think you have exhausted all your options when going out, then let Sono be your next place to go. I came in for lunch causally and noticed off the bat that the people here are pleasant and courteous. The service was fast, the three sushi rolls I had were modest in size but was very filling. I did hear this place was BYOB though this location is fortunate to have a liquor store literally around the block! Basically if you’re in town and want a casual spot to go with friends or by yourself, then consider this place as the extra effort to find parking in this strip mall is worth it. Excuse me… Waitress! Can I get another order to go?!!

Great sushi! Been going here for over 10 years. Family run, Owners are always there. If you aren’t into sushi they have a great steak teriyaki. Make a reservation bc it gets busy on weekends. Great price on lunch specials. ByoB
