Best place to have South Indian food. This is my favorite place whenever I crave for tiffins. They sell best idly, Dosa, Vada and sometimes Thaali. They have good ambience and staff is friendly. After 6 years I could get Chikku shake and the taste will always be in my palate.

Awesome authentic food! Generous servings, especially the breads! Wasn’t sure what to order and the guys behind the counter were super friendly and helpful in giving suggestions. My boyfriend, who loves Indian food, and has dined in probably every Indian Restaurant in the state, said it was the best he has ever had! Will be definitely be back!(Not a great atmosphere for dining in, as it is nothing special, however, the quality of this true authentic food supersedes the ambiance)! Will not hesitate for take-out. Our new go-to for Indian cuisine!

Not impressed at all! First of all, you stand in line for an hour to place your order and pay before you can even find a place to sit! Yes, it is packed, and you hope that when it is your time to place your order, you can actually find a place to sit and enjoy your meal when it is finally ready and your number is called. Absolutely no respect for their patrons. And the audacity of their prices ! This is the opposite of what one expects at any restaurant ! Will go to Priya or any other Indian joint, and will not be back to this place again, and neither should you!

Quick, very affordable, large portions — Udupi Bhavan is alright in my book! We recently came here for lunch and it was good. Korma, dosa, gobi manchurian, pakora — these were just some of the very tasty vegetarian dishes we had. It’s straight to the point: you order, wait to be called, and either take your food to-go or dine-in — super simple and, I like it. Did I mention it’s good and cheap Indian? If you’re ever around this way, you won’t be disappointed trying Udupi Bhavan!

Another heavenly meal! Paneer tiki masala was somehow light while being rich. So many layers of flavor rather than the conventional cream sugar one note! Samosa so flavorful they don’t need sauce. Masala dosa with a soft spicy potato filling and great coconut sauce. Can’t wait to go back

A religious experience! Staff is really really friendly, and food is overall good for someone who doesn’t know much about indian food, at least.

I knew my first review post joining Unilocal would be for udupi bhavan. This place has been an abode of authentic Indian food in and around the county ever since I visited. Being a pure Vegeterian and coming from a mix of south and North Indian background it always feel like eating home food here with the recipes of traditional/staple Indian food, to name a few idli, dosa, poori, bisibelabath and also the spl curry with chapathi. Taste is promising and very consistent. Planned or unplanned, windy or snowy we end up eating here some weekend or the other. Sometimes just for my daughter who is great fan of idli and milagai podi. Masala chai is good but I wonder why they don’t give filter coffee which goes hand in hand after a good South Indian tiffin. The ambience is average. Need to improve on the décor and furniture. I don’t have to tell«will visit again» because we(me and my family) will be here of course So if you are looking for a nice homely, delicious and perfectly spiced Indian food this place is the best

«Every dish is perfectly spiced and packed full of flavor, from the samosa chat to the dosas.» The sambar was also good with dosas. we just keep refilling that. Malai Kofta with chapati… just can’t wait to go there again. We miss the buffet. But it is worth driving for more then 20 mils

This place hasn’t changed in years, except the prices have doubled. Its definitely a $$ place now. It’s always been a little greasy, but for $ 6 it was worth it. At $ 12 its not worth while. More traditional restaurants will please better. At least take some of that extra cash and buy some plates and silverware!

Wow, what an amazingly delicious place. Don’t be fooled by its lack-luster décor, this place is the best. I am always looking for excuses to go to the best South Indian food I’ve ever had. Would highly recommend the masala dosa, chana masala, and definitely don’t leave without trying the mango lassi!

Self service restaurant but they are the best in the area for what they serve. South Indian food. Price agrees with your pocket and taste with your tongue. Don’t miss out on Gobhi Manchurian though not a real South Indian dish but because of its popularity in south India has become quite native. Regular southern delicacies like Differenr variants of Dosas, utthapam will leave a taste that will make you come over and over again. Me and family come out almost every month some time more than once here and have never once for disappointed.

So I returned the yesterday whilst I was in CT. Got myself a Mysore Sada Dosa, which the young gentleman informed me is way smaller than paper masala dosa I had last night n may not be enough.(Yup, he remembers me!) I told him I got my bases covered, I was planning to get a vegetable korma and chai tea with my meal. The dosa was ready first, and guess what, that thing filled me up. Couldn’t even eat another bite after the Mysore Sada dosa. Packed the vegetable korma to go, went for an hour walk to make space in my stomach and ate the korma at 9PM. So full but the food was really good. I’d say i am more impressed with the paper masala dosa than the other two. I will definitely return when I am in the area again.

I’m a South Indian and know good South Indian food, being able to whip up everything on Udupi Bhavan’s menu with ease in my kitchen. That being said, I’ll go back. The place has decent food, and leaves my south Indian heart feeling content. The food is not the best I’ve had, but is as good as you’ll find outside of an Indian family’s kitchen. I didn’t have 1 favorite dish because everything was just right, not great. So if you’re an Indian who’s missing the taste of home, or a non-Indian who’s looking for something new to try, this is a good place for an inexpensive meal. Recommended.

Truly as good as it gets. I don’t say that lightly. I’ve been to India and I have Indian friends who text me in Hindi sometimes and I have an Indian partner and so I think I can truthfully attest to the fact that this place is DELICIOUS. We came here on a Sunday afternoon after paying a visit to the Indian temple next door(are you taking me more seriously now?) at about 1pm. The place was not full yet, surprisingly. I ordered the rasa onion masala dosa — my favourite! — along with idli and vadai and lassi. The dosa is on point, really. It is a massive serving for the price you pay(~$ 10 per dosa). I got it to go and had the other half for dinner. I enjoyed the sambar very much, too. The only thing that was missing I’d say was the lack of drumstick, but hey! I was a very happy person that night. My bill for all that food came to $ 15 per person. The place is vegetarian only so I would caution all the Tony Bourdain anti-vegetarian types out there, but whatever. The lack of meat just makes it even more authentic. Even Tony couldn’t turn away Indian vegetarian food at this standard.

Decided to go someplace other than the usual haunts, and I daresay I really liked this place. Udupi Bhavan serves only vegetarian Indian food, and it was absolutely wonderful. The Good: Amazing food. We only ordered a few things, but everything was outstanding. We even watched what other people were ordering, and damn if it all didn’t look and smell amazing. Perhaps the only criticism of the food could be that it was TOO rich. Yeah, not much of a complaint at all. Prices were good. Service was polite and decent for what it was. Parking was ample — they are in a small shopping plaza with many eateries and other interesting places with a large parking lot to service it. Their menu had an excellent selection of many items you don’t see at every Indian restaurant. I really appreciate that it seems to a social hub for the local desi community. The Bad: Nothing bad to say here unless you really want to dine on a Monday, then it sucks for you because they are closed that day. The Ugly: I’m not a huge fan of counter service, though I don’t usually hold it against a place. However, it is worth noting that you place an order up front and pick it up from the counter when its ready. The décor is functional — one could even say that its simplicity lacks the overtly ethnic overtures of so many other Indian restaurants who hang decidedly«Indian» trappings on every wall and table surface. This is just a room with some tables, a counter, and a kitchen in the back. Nothing fancy, but it may not be the most appealing locale for some folks. Personally, I was fine with it. I really can’t wait to go back and try something new.

I have been here for lunch many times, both to eat-in and take-out and I will be here many more! I absolutely love this place. The food is fantastic, the menu has tons of great options and the people are incredibly nice. Since you have to go to the counter to order and pay and bring your food back to your table, I think that saves a lot of valuable time, rather than sitting around waiting to be served. This is a beautiful thing when you’re on a lunch break! As I’m sure you’re aware if you’re reading this, Udupi is a vegetarian restaurant but they have many, many delicious options. I have tried lots of their dishes, including the palak paneer, vegetable korma, Mysore masala dosa(dosa filled with chutney, potatoes & onions), plantain pakora, chai tea, mango lassi and many more. Their food is always perfectly spiced and the portions are generous, which is great because if you can manage to take some home, it’s even better the next day! The décor isn’t fancy, but you won’t even notice while you’re delightfully shoving rice and curried vegetables into your face. As I mentioned, the man and woman that are always there are incredibly nice and more than happy to answer any questions that you may have about the menu. Whether you’re vegetarian or carnivore you should do yourself a favor and check it out!

A word scramble progressed on the CRT screen overhead, ceasing periodically to make way for classic Bollywood tunes. The walls were adorned as much by art as by a microwave, toaster oven, and other kitchen appliances, adding to the high-school-cafeteria-like ambiance. We had arrived at Middletown, Connecticut’s Indian gem: Udupi Bhavan(translation: «Udupi Palace»…perhaps founded by members of the Berkeley dynasty who had moved East in search of lower rents?). While our early dinnertime prevented us from confirming the claims that all of UB’s patrons are of South Asian descent, we did note that all of the staff and cooks were indeed Indian. We also saw what may have been hints of the East Coast Indian mafia’s influence in the distinct dearth of knives(violence prevention) and the use of Styrofoam plates and plastic utensils(limiting worldly possessions presumably facilitates easy escape from the premises in the event of mafia warfare). While the plastic forks were utterly inadequate for eating some of the many dishes we ordered, we nonetheless found that UB delivered. We began with(free!) papad that was pleasantly crisp and nicely salted; excellently tart, highly viscous mango lassis($ 3.5); and raita with an impressive tang. The sambar may even have been homemade; while it wasn’t quite savory enough, it had impressively large chunks of vegetables. Neither did the mains disappoint: the bise bele bhath($ 7) was a solid dish, and the veggie korma($ 10) had a very flavorful sauce and was actually spicy! Well done. The cheese masala dosa($ 9), while not quite crispy enough, had filling with nice consistency. And finally, the aloo gobi eigendish($ 10) had appropriate cookitude; however, we were very surprised to find broccoli contained therein(?!). While we appreciate that broccoli and gobi may be the same species, we nonetheless found the addition mysterious. As you know, loyal readers, while we here at Masala Chaat may incessantly make fun of restaurants’ ambiance, it’s really the food that matters. And at UB, the food was quite good, worthy of four samosas, with decidedly reasonable two-rupee prices. One may wonder why such a gem resides in Middletown, CT. We later learned that a Hindu temple – at the time the lone temple in the state – resides a gulab jamun’s throw away. Is divine intervention the source of UB’s stellar performance, or is it perhaps the result of a more organized institution?

Located in a strip mall off Route 9, at first glance Udupi Bhavan isn’t that appealing. This is not your average Indian restaurant; if you want fancy plates and table service, you’ll have to go somewhere else. At Udupi, you order at the counter, grab a pitcher of water from the fridge, and wait for the deliciousness to come out on styrofoam plates. What Udupi lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in the quality of its food. The extensive menu is all vegetarian, but you won’t miss the meat. Every dish is perfectly spiced and packed full of flavor, from the samosa chat to the dosas. The entrées surpass those of any local Indian restaurant. I highly recommend the Malai Kofta and the Channa Batura– both are perfection. They have a buffet on Saturdays which is good, too, but I prefer to order off the menu. If you find yourself in Middletown, hop on Route 9 and check this place out but beware– it may ruin all other Indian restaurants for you.

You are in for an interesting experience eating here! This is probably the most authentic Indian restaurant I’ve been to – with that comes some pros and cons. The biggest pro, I think, is the price: you can get a feast for only $ 10 – 12. And the food is different and unique, especially compared to most of the fancier Northern Indian restaurants with the standard tikka masala. In terms of the food, I enjoyed some things and didn’t enjoy others. Udupi Bhavan is supposed to be known for their dosas(crepes), but the one we tried had lots of raw onion in it and only a small section of lentils. Not very appetizing. The donut appetizers were not made fresh and were somewhat lukewarm. I did really like the rasam(soup), which I hadn’t had before. The dal, chutneys, and curries were all good. If you order the Thali special, don’t be afraid to ask the owner how to mix up the yogurt and sauces on the side with your curry — I didn’t and I think I missed a lot of depth of flavor that way. As others have said, there isn’t much to see in the restaurant itself so takeout is the way to go.
