The food had decent flavor, however, the service was horrible. We waited for over 5 minutes before anyone even came to our table to greet us then they just put chips and salsa on the table and left didn’t take a drink order or anything. Then it took another 10 minutes before anyone came back again to get our food and drink order. When I asked about stuff on the menu the server acted like I was stupid for asking what was in stuff since the menu was all in Spanish.

This place sucks. The servers don’t speak any English so good luck trying to order. Also there is no air conditioning which I think is on purpose to give you the full Mexican experience. I honestly left hoping I wouldn’t get sick after. Good luck.

Great authentic Mexican food. There are vegetarian options too. I had the quesadilla de flor de calabaza which had a good flavor. They also have sopes and pupusas. Will definitely be going back here.

hole in the wall with real mexican food. i came for a visit after looking for some menudo on a SUNDAY(majority mexican restaurants were closed sundays in the area) morning. the soup came hot along with all the fixins on the sides like diced onion/cilantro mix, cut limes, a few other seasonings and homemade tortillas. this menudo was up to standards with what i get back home in California. I enjoyed it so much that i tipped the bowl back to finish off the soup. also had a carne asada torta there which really put the stamp on things that this will surely not be my last time ever setting foot here. The torta was all around fresh. everything about it. the bread was soft, the steak was well portioned, what stuck out about the torta was that they actually used fresh graded mexican cheese. an average of maybe 1⁄10 mexican restaurants use mexican cheese. its the bomb!

Great place I really enjoyed the food as did our group of four, I tried the smothered burrito I’d also recommend the fajitas. They have 4 pool tables which is nice if you want a place to hangout or something to do while your waiting for your food. Also they give you 3 salsas with your chips to begin your meal which are all delicious. It would be 5 stars if the service was a little better had empty drinks for a good portion of our meal.

This place didn’t look like much on the outside. Don’t let that fool or scare you away. The food is excellent! Most places give you only one salsa with your chips, but this place gives you three different types. My favorite was the green salsa. I ordered a smothered burrito and I was surprised on how quick it got to my table. It was delicious from my first bite and all the to my last. I look forward to seeing what else this place has to offer.

Best Michilada I’ve had in a very long time. Genuine, delicious Mexican food. Atmosphere and restaurant décor are lacking but the food is worth a visit.

The place is a little dive-y but the food is awesome. I’ve tried enchiladas and chile rellenos and liked them both but I’ve gotten hooked on the Burrito de Desayuno(breakfast burrito). Incredibly good! They have the best chorizo I’ve tasted anywhere in Utah. Add some of their excellent salsa verde and this is some of the best Mexican food you can get just about anywhere.

This place is a little sketchy, in the way where you wonder how they stay open, how clean it is, and where you are. The service was slow, and it was a little bit like food roulette when ordering,

Los Machetes is an interesting little place. It almost feels like a step outside of Utah, honestly. To where, I don’t know, but it’s a little pocket of something else… whatever that is. Maybe Wonderland? I’ve long known the restaurant was there, having driven, walked and ridden past it multiple times over the past few years, but I never managed to make it there for a meal. The exterior is pretty worn, and other than being a large corner structure, it didn’t really demand much attention. I’m glad, nonetheless, that I did manage to eat here — and I’m sad I likely won’t have another chance to return. The interior, as described by some, is rather peculiar, and does leave evidence of its former life as a bank. It’s a curious place, as Alice might have said. The mirrors on one wall give the illusion of a much larger space, and the safe door draped with a colorful Mexican blanket adds to the peculiarity. It’s rather dingy and felt pretty empty when we went for lunch, but I’d like to see how it does for dinner. The food was great as far as I am concerned. I ordered a huarache. And though the flavors were quite subtle, they were pleasant — not to mention fresh. The chips and salsa were also delicious. Though it seemed very interesting that the paper lining the bowl had a pattern of an orange ‘P’ surrounded by an orange circle… Popeye’s? I’m pretty sure it was Popeye’s paper… but, hey, no one’s asking«Why?» when you’re in Wonderland. My friend ordered a quesadilla — which was huge! While they felt it was too greasy, when I tasted it I didn’t think so, but rather that it was excellent. The tortilla had a lovely homemade flavor, certainly not something from a package. At his point I think I have more questions than conclusions about Los Machetes, but the food I experienced was delicious. Maybe if I do get to return, things will be a little clearer. For now, 4 stars.

Went here trying to find papusas. The local is fun, its on an old main street in Midvale, and the old bank setting was fun. As the reviews before, they had novelas on TV, and I was bale to order in spanish, so it was fun. We tried the papusas, which I have no reference on, so I will say they were good. I also go tthe Super Chicken Quesadilla, and it was great. I would eat 10 of those! I will go back and try some other authentic mexican food. We also had pina aguita, and it was great. Good times

I came here on a whim with some friends and as everyone says, it looks a little sketch but that doesn’t scare me. We walked in and there were only two other tables. It isn’t the brightest of places and they didn’t seem to bother with turning the lights on but whatever, mood lighting right? We were immediately served warm chips and three salsas: two reds and a green. Generally green salsa is pretty mild but this avocado creamy goodness was the spiciest! Yum. There was a bit of a language barrier, okay a lot of one, so I ended up getting a pupusa, a mole enchilada, and a green enchilada. No complaints here. The pupusa was cheese-filled but a little dry. The mole had some really great flavors but the green one was my favorite. I need to go back for more. Both of my friends got quesadillas of sorts and they were gigantic! And so good. Don’t come here if you’re looking for ambiance. I mean, unless the ambiance you’re looking for is dark bank in the middle of Midvale. But do come here for delicious cheesy goodness and spicy salsa.

In the words of my «Sainted» mother(sainted hahahahaha) «This isn’t white people Mexican» Dropped by for a bit of carne asada and a smothered burrito and gravy Martha this was AWESOME. The carne was out of this world and reminded me of the time I spent in Mexico running drugs for the cartel… wait what? …Anyway the service was fast and friendly our waiter brought out not one, not two but three different types of salsa for our chips. One was mild and the other 2 were special(special means slightly tangy with heat, and it’s so hot but I can’t stop eating it). They have a good beer menu and I grabbed Tecate to pair with my lovely carne asada. If you find yourself in Midvale stop by for a meal before you get mugged on the street.

great food. Friendly service. The fish and shrimp soup was fabulous, the flavors were phenomenal. The sauces were great also. Don’t be fooled by the inside. This is Mexican food.

They don’t speak any English here… we pointed a lot. About to be served so I’ll write a complete review later. The four stars are mainly for EFFORT because the food was just OK. Yes, it was cooked well and tasty, but still… nothing you couldn’t get anywhere. In the middle of a road trip in a state we were not familiar with, wintertime and them just about to get their first big snow storm of the season, we were searching on our Unilocal app for a local mexican eatery. This one had pretty good reviews, so we came on over. One of the reviewers had mentioned that the menu’s were in spanish and I appreciated the head’s up. Unfortunately, he failed to mention that the waitstaff spoke ONLY spanish. Makes for an interesting game of point at the menu item and wonder what the heck it is. And NO, I didn’t want anything complicated. Something like a wet burrito would’ve done just fine. The problem was figuring out which meat was gonna be inside it. Pollo?(chicken), Carne(beef), Carnitas({pork), or what? She kept saying some other words which stymied my remedial spanish so I just asked her to bring it out from the kitchen in a bowl… yes, the choices of meat. All of them. And so you don’t think i was bullying her, she was nice and friendly and didn’t mind at all. She obviously didn’t bring me EVERYTHING, just 3 meat choices which i promptly tasted and chose ONE. So that fixed everything. My dinner cohort chose something so inane and simple that no guessing was required. LAZY! :D All in all it was a decent place with nice people and we left full and happy. What more could you really want in the middle of a snow storm?

The salsa was great. The entres were good as well. However, our waitress did not ever come around to check on our drinks or chips. Not even once! And we were the only three customers in the restaurant! Also, she did not speak any English, which made ordering a little difficult. But I’ll probably go back. I hope that my service is much, much better next time.

When the holy trinity of salsas showed up, and I sampled each, I was thinking 5 stars! Then the food came and I was thinking 3 stars. Then, as I continued to eat and eat and eat until my plate was clean, I settled on 4 stars. The salsas were fantastic! Helpful Hint: mix the two reds… it’s heavenly! I ordered the Carne A La Mexicana, which was strips of beef steak, onions, jalapenos, and bell peppers in a tomato sauce. They served it with 5 warm corn tortillas(I felt bad for only eating 2), rice and beans. The reasons I dipped briefly to 3 stars were: 1– Costco frozed veggie medley in the rice. The green beans were just a bit much. 2– The steak was not the best quality and was slightly overcooked, which made it quite tough and hard to cut in some spots. These two minor problems were overcome easily by the bold flavors and, as mentioned earlier, I ate the entire meal, green beans and all. The service was great during my visit. I didn’t have to wait long for anything and the waitress was Janie-on-the-spot with refills and«do you need anything else» questions. The building is really OLD, but very clean. To top it off, there was a Mexi-soap-opera on TV! Sweet! I’ll be going back to Los Machetes 2 for sure!

Tough call here. On the one hand, it was a totally unique dining experience. Los Machetes focuses on food most unique to Mexico City. One unique point. The building is an old bank. Two unique points. This is menu and waiter service dining in a bank with several pool tables. How’s that for one-of-a-kind? This place has been several different Mexican restaurants in the last several years. Machetes has been there for about three. In a previous life it was«The Mint» restaurant, and in the olden days it was Walker Bank. This concludes the history portion of my review. Feeling particularly daring one night, we gave it a try. They’ve really made no effort to hide the old bank. There are still old deposit windows, Diebold deposit drawers, a teller box, and even the old vault sits with its door open. There are two dining areas, we were seated in the one with pool tables. The guy at the counter brought us menus and was very helpful to walk us through them. They did have English translation, which was helpful. After ordering we were given homemade chips and three kinds of salsa – a regular chunkyesque red salsa, a green creamy avacado/cilantro, and a dark red roasted vinegary(?) salsa. The red was very mild, the creamy the hottest, and the dark red one was just plain tasty with a kick. Great salsas. Really surprised at how much I liked them. We got our food. It didn’t look like the typical Americanized fare and that made me happy. The smothered burrito was tightly wrapped in its flour tortilla blanket and covered in a brownish sauce. The quesadilla(cactus leaf, potato, cheese) was about as far from a Taco Bell monstrosity as can be. And I had a pambazo for the first time. I dunno if it was done right, but I liked it. Very efficient service, minus a long wait for refills. Very friendly to a couple of non-regulars. Totally unique experience. Not blow your socks off good, but different enough that it would be fun to go back and try some other menu items. Where else are you going to watch dudes play pool to the sounds of a telenovela on tv while eating a pambazo in an old bank?

I’m still full, so it’s fresh in my mind… or, rather, my stomach. Apparently this building is an old bank. The drive through teller area and vault doors are still intact, which is kinda neat. They have a pool table area and big tvs playing continuous soap operas. We were immediately served thick tortilla chips and 3 different flavors of salsa. A mild, a medium(green) and a hot. I even tried the hot and didn’t die, and I loved the taste of the green salsa. Very fresh. The avocado and cilantro really popped. Since we were experimenting, we shared a few menu items: the quesadilla de machete, one of the pambazos, and the smothered burrito. All were tasty. The smothered burrito was definitely not from Café Rio, so don’t go in expecting that. It seemed more home style, and had a brown sauce. I liked it. The quesadilla was unique, not my favorite, but my husband really liked it. Everything was much bigger than I expected. The pambazo was my favorite, even though I’m still not really sure what it was that I was eating. Google it. It was plenty of food for two and very reasonably priced. They have a whole page of standard sounding fare that is served with rice and beans as well. The service was ok. We got settled well and the food came quickly. Drink refills were not a priority and it was a bit confusing about the check. Apparently, you just go up to the counter to pay when you’re done. A fun experience for a slow Friday night. It’d be fun to go back with some friends. And don’t worry, the menu has English sub titles.
