I went here because of the good reviews, but very disappointed. Not only the place is dirty and food quality is bad, they don’t even serve green tea. I asked for green tea, and they gave me a tea bag.

Delicious fresh fish! The 3 piece dinner is worth the money because the sides are great for sharing as appetizers. I got the chirashi bowl + takoyaki + basil salmon sashimi. Takoyaki was the right amount of soft ooey goodness in the middle. Their ramen and udon are good ‘sides’ as well. The friends I was with got the salmon and teriyaki chicken combo with avocado-less california roll(due to allergies) and toro tuna. The fish is fresh and the toro tuna was MELTINYOURMOUTH. Service is excellent and gracious. Prices are reasonable for the quality. They don’t check on you too much, but know when to refill water and tea for you. Come again? Yes, please when I’m in town and can splurge. People have said the fish isnt fresh, but it might not have been the right days.

Disappointed with Sushi Kai. We came on my birthday(12÷07÷15) for lunch. We felt extremely rushed the entire time we were there and the 2 servers spent the entire time cleaning up around us and the other couple that came in a second before us. I get that it was close to closing time, but they should have just turned us away instead of rushing us. Food was mediocre, but the portion size in comparison to our usually sushi place was super disappointing. Their portions are so small!!! I left hungry and we ended up at the bakery a few doors down.

The biggest perk of this place is definitely their menu. The quality and quantity are both a bit underwhelming but overall I was happy with my meal. I’d say the fish quality ranges between a 3 – 3.5 star(average, not the most flavorful) but the price and selections make up for it enough for me to round up my rating. I love chirashi bowls but I get bored with the typical selection of sake and hamachi and I always appreciate a place that offers a more interesting selection(even if it is a few extra bucks) and Sushi Kai really does that. I got the special Hokkai Chirashi which came with amaebi, uni, eel, etc. The amaebi quality was good(though the head wasn’t as fried as I’d like) and the uni wasn’t bad. The quality of the rest of the selection was average to above average but nothing too special. The rice’s flavor was also fairly average. The price was a bit high but overall I was happy with it. I also got the seafood porridge. This was delicious! The small pieces of shrimp in the porridge are honestly kind of overcooked but as a whole the dish really tastes great. A bit pricy considering you’re mainly paying for watered down rice but it was a delicious and hearty meal. It doesn’t always come with wasabi but I highly recommend adding a bit in. Overall, I really like this place and will definitely come back for their weekday specials and porridge.

Under different ownership and menu. But I will choose this joint over Sen Dai for Japanese food and sashimi any day, plus there’s barely any wait. If you are looking for tasty rolls, however, Sen Dai is the place in Milpitas, just be prepared for aint wait if you don’t get there right when they open for lunch or dinner.

If I could it would be 3.5 stars. Had the special chirashi which included toro, uni, and raw shrimp and a fried shrimp head. For $ 24 it was a pretty good deal considering at other places you don’t get those items. They do put some salty on the rice but also pink sugar. I think the sugar is meant to balance the salty but I just find it weird. Also had the Wednesday special which was mashed up toro and uni over sushi rice. The best I could say is it is different and not bad. Not really something I would say I would order again but it was worth ordering. Service is lackluster, never came back after giving us our food. I guess since the price is decent I rounded up for stars. If I was closer to this place I would probably be a regular for lunch. They have quite a few intersting dishes. I am not sure if they are authentic but it is not blatant fusion which I don’t normally like.

I like all fusion type sushi rolls here. From spider to dragon, all kinds, for $ 12.99 each. Today I tried seafood porridge for the first time($ 16.99). I must say, it’s also super delicious!

I came here for the 1st time EVER a few years back. That trip Left me vowing to never come back again. The fish didn’t seem so fresh and the top Layer was dry– Like it was Left out in the open without being covered. CLearLy i am no sushi connoisseur and you have to be extremeLy bad for me to NOT Like what is being offered to me… so that aLone shouLd say something. Fast forward to my more recent trips– Sushi Kai is still a smaLL restaurant, i’d classify this pLace as COMFYCOZY. They seemed to have been some kind of changes made from my intiaL 1st visit. It doesn’t seem as outdated as i remembered and they have tons of speciaLs going on(each day of the week, they offer something different). Food– Sushi was good. It tasted fresh and the presentation was beautifuL. Great spot for sashimi or sushi roLLs if you are in the mood. I may venture out of my norm and try some of their noodLes they offer. There seems to be a Lobster seafood udon that is very popuLar.

SONOTWORTHTHE $$. They said uni was fresh, but it looked almost smashed and watery. Tasted decent though so we didn’t make a big deal about it. You can definitely get fresher sashimi elsewhere. Like how they had a picture menu on the walls. I should’ve gotten a rice bowl like my cousin, would’ve been a better deal… Service was good tho, still seated us even though we came in 30 min before lunch hour ended. But all for 70 – 100?(I forgot, including two beers) Was definitely not worth it.

3.5 stars! This is a tiny cute little restaurant tucked away inside a plaza. They have a lot of special of the days! Some of it are pretty worth it, but I have yet to try some of them because the best ones seem to be during weekday, and I usually go on the weekend. If you come here, you definitely need to try the seared salmon belly nigiri! I was very surprised by the flavor of it. It was delicious! Also check if they have hamachi belly nigiri– one of my favorites! I also tried some other ones like sake(salmon) and unagi(eel). They’re all good here, but if you’re looking for high-class, super fresh fish, this isn’t the place for you. I also tried the chicken teriyaki and beef teriyaki. Usually I don’t like to get these very often because they can be dry. But to my surprise, it was pretty good here. Definitely give the lunch/dinner boxes a try :) Customer service is very friendly and they’re quick to help you and clear your dishes when you’re done. Since I’m in the area often I will come back for a quick bite… especially for the seared salmon belly!

I went here before to get some rolls for take out. The rolls were awesome. It could have been the day that the food wasn’t fresh or something but I had more complaints than positives. I got a small salad. The red cabbage was really bitter and the house dressing had a little too much sesame oil. The best part was the soft shell crab appetizer. Perfectly fried and great sauce. The Hawaiian Poke was underwhelming, minimal flavor. I had to add a little soy sauce and chili powder just to make it better. Eventually the seaweed salad and the sashimi made a weird gloopy texture. The sashimi dinner had a lovely presentation but still it was not as fresh of fish as hoped. We will try it again for sure!

Pleasant waitresses but neither knowledgable or quick. 3 out of 5 things we ordered came different from description. One was a mistake and the others were changed without updating the menu. Not only wasn’t it advised, the wait staff had no idea when we asked. Of course, 45 minutes later we finally get the last entrée ordered and the dinner special chirashi bowl is the saddest I’ve seen. More than two thirds of the small bowl is made up of ginger, kale, wasabi, and 2 pieces of fake crab. Plenty of options out there — should have listened to previous reviews.

I travelled in Japan 5 times. I know what’s good sushi and sashimi are. Last week I moved from New York to Milpitas. And I felt like to eat Japanese food. Trust me. They gave me the worst sushi and sashimi in my life. I will never go to this place again!

Small restaurant so you will probably have to wait if you go during lunch or dinner hours. I got the 2 item bento. The California rolls were dry and had too much rice. Also, they were not rolled properly so half of them were open when I got my bento. The salmon teriyaki was okay but pretty dry as well. However, the teriyaki sauce definitely helped with the dryness. My uncle ordered the sashimi and could not eat some of it because it was not fresh. Overall, they have decent prices, but the food is just average.

Went back totally randomly, due to a sudden hankering for the Volcano — only to learn that they no longer make it! Apparently this place has had new ownership for the past 4 years(my last visit was probably like 5 years ago) and the Volcano was specific to the previous owners. Not a total loss though. I’d skip over any of the super fancy rolls and definitely return for the Seared Salmon Belly nigiri and the Negi-Toro(chopped green onion and fatty tuna). The simpler the better.

You get what you pay for at this place and it’s a GO-TO place for people at my work. Whenever I come here for lunch, I always run into a co-worker. It gets packed around noon so be sure to come a little sooner to beat the rush. The waitresses here are really nice, but they are always so busy. This place has a really good lunch special deal. It’s usually some type of donburi + a plate of salad and fried food(chicken katsu, pork cutlet, fried fish, etc.) for only $ 10 or $ 11. You can’t really beat that deal.

Definitely a different experience for dinner. M and I came here to satisfy my craving for nigiri. This will be our new spot when we aren’t in the mood for rolls from Sen Dai. It’s much closer and the quality of the fish is great. The seared super white tuna lived up to its expectations. The salmon belly was good but I like the super white tuna better. The bbq snapper was one of my faves. We were the only ones in the restaurant and service was friendly but on the slower side. I didn’t mind because it was more intimate. We literally had the whole place to ourselves. Skip: the chicken nanjan or whatever you call it. It was a little too salty and oily for my taste.

This place has changed dramatically from the old Sushi Kai. The layout is different. They’ve removed the boats and added a regular sushi bar. It seems like a little less space, but it is very clean inside. They have pictures on the walls of their daily specials and of various dishes they offer. I came here last Friday for dinner. They have an extensive menu as well as a chef’s special menu with all various types of the chef’s recommended fish for that day. I ordered the chef’s special sashimi platter that came with 12 pieces for $ 24.99(see my posted picture for the names), uni, negitoro, and a spider roll. All of the fish was super fresh and delicious. I enjoyed it all. If you’re more of a special roll type person, they have some, but nothing that really caught my eye. I was here for the sashimi! The weight staff was also very friendly and assertive. If you want good sashimi with different kinds of fish and flavors, come here!

My dad recommended this place, his workplace is fairly close so I think he comes here often. They have daily specials and the pictures of all the specials are above the sushi bar. My fiancée went with the Marutoku bowl, which included salmon, uni, chopped crab, and yellowtail over rice. I went with the special chirashi which included toro, uni, amebi, and other various fish. Quality of the fish/uni was excellent and fresh. The food was good no doubt. But service was questionable. It was pretty busy, so I guess it is understandable. But one of our dishes did not come out right and after asking the server about it, she didn’t really fix it. I don’t think she understood me very well, so there was a bit of a language barrier. The salmon was good though, perfectly seasoned and light. The issue was one of our appetizers, Ikura and fried salmon agedashi, did not come out with the ikura. I asked about it and the waitress said she’d check on it. She came back with more of our dishes and I asked again. she kinda just nodded and said yes. Never came back to fix it. I really wanted my damn ikura… oh well. Food is excellent, service needs some work. I think they were a bit understaffed.
