What can I say? I called the store to try to purchase a mattress and was routed through what I can only describe as seven layers of hell in disguise as a phone tree. After two calls, I finally did reach someone who spoke little English, and was transferred to an unhelpful and irritated sales person. Bottom line: the mattress wasn’t even available in store, only online. Complete waste of time.

One year later and the store is still in freefall. I went last weekend looking for sweaters — I like to stock up this time of the season. It is early March in MN and this formerly good store now has stocked itself with summer goods. No winter goods, no sales on seasonal goods. I continue to be amazed that this failed experiment continues. Good to see that Wall street has not been confused by the shilly shally. One month later: they have replaced the Apple Store genius with someone who likely realizes that the apparel market is not like the technology market and i still hope for the day when JCP becomes my store again. This from a man who started college with a suitcase full of Towncraft underwear and T-shirts. In other words, a lifelong buyer who always liked the value proposition. Until recently.

I needed a new piece of luggage, so I stopped in to JCPenny’s for a new satchel. I had a hard time finding the luggage section, compounded by the clear lack of interest by the employees to help any customers(one lady even saw me coming to ask a question and ducked behind a counter to avoid helping me…). Regardless, I found the luggage section, selected a piece and trucked over to the counter to check-out. The cashier was pleasant enough and silently entered a coupon for an additional 15% my purchase, which was nice of her. So, at the end of the day, I would go back for a good deal. but not for good customer service.
