So we came in the middle of February. Not exactly high season for Montauk. The Saltbox was a pleasant surprise. Chili con carne was wonderful! Salad was fresh and huge! Two lobster rolls were classically good. The service was excellent and the place was relaxed. Not sure what this place is like in high season, but we will be back to find out!

Went here during the off season in the winter when I was in Montauk for a road trip. I ordered the lobster roll, my sister the stew. It was delicious. Literally no one was eating at the time so it was quiet and peaceful. We were surprised it was even open, actually. The waitress was friendly and polite. Wonderful food, great experience. Worth the two dollar signs.

I came because of the rave reviews. The butternut squash salad was very good. However the seafood stew was the worst meal I have had in a long time. Overpowered by a salty beyond belief broth. The seafood had no distinguishable taste. Wish I’d ordered something else or stopped at the salad.

So I really wanted to try this place as I have friends that worked with the owner at Nobu. However the service was so bad, the hostess wasn’t there and in the back on her phone… The bartender didn’t say hello and as I asked if we could sit he say …“yes” in a tone that was meant for a 10 year old. And after he approached us he asked what we wanted, I said, «a menu» never received one by the Way. Decided to get up and bring our service elsewhere.

Saltbox was a nice little find when my girlfriend and I were cruising around Long Island. We wandered to the end of the island and were happy to find Saltbox. It has a very hipster vibe with an awesome, laid-back ambiance. I ordered the fisherman’s stew with a side of Brussels sprouts. The stew was rich and flavorful with lot’s of great seafood beyond what I’d normally expect. Not only did it have the usual shrimp and scallops, but it also had some pleasant surprises such as lobster claws and octopus. Great hearty soup for a cold cold night! The Brussels sprouts were some of the best I’ve had anywhere. Very crispy, shredded and fried — great caramelization! Wonderful! 5 stars to this point! I had to drop a star because of the dessert and drink. The dessert was simply a pre-packaged refrigerator chocolate pie that was not made at The Saltbox. Overly sweet and lacking any complexity. Very disappointing — I couldn’t eat it. The drink was a «special» seasonal beverage. It was a hot mulled apple cider with a shot of Sailor Jerry rum in it. Quite tasty and delicious on a cold night; I had two. The surprise came with the bill that it was $ 13 each! Sure, I can understand $ 13 for a craft cocktail that takes 5 minutes plus to make with fresh citrus, herbs, house-made bitters, etc. This was not that drink! This was apple cider in a Crockpot with a teabag and then a shot added. I would not have expected to pay more than $ 7 for this drink tasty, but simple drink. Between the price of the drink and the terrible dessert, I simply can’t give more than 4 stars. The rest of our experience was wonderful: good service; delicious entrée. Go for the food, not the dessert and pricey alcohol.

Food was delicious. Really liked that the menu was small but had such a good variety to choose from.

This place is awesome! Décor is fantastic and service was top-notch. My wife and I split the onion rings for an appetizer and we both had the seafood stew. The stew was incredible! One of the best dishes I’ve ever had. Love this place and will be my go-to when I am in Montauk.

I want to preface this by we ordered take out. Maybe the food is better in the restaurant. Overall, it was a disappointing meal. Portions were small and blah. We had the onion rings to start. Just not right. Thick thick batter with very little onion(and just physically hard to eat). Next, Asian shrimp. Overall fried with little flavor. Beet salad: little flavor. Steak frites: bland & over cooked. Just a big disappointment.

Place looked cool, had a beachy vibe. Food was great. Service was efficient and to the point. Wings– crispy, delicious and meaty wings. Lobster roll– well done. If you like lobster rolls give it a shot. Fish tacos– great! Well priced and super tasty

8 of us went there for early dinner at 5:30pm after a boat ride. We were all starving. A few of us shared the chicken wings, which was actually amazing, and the grilled baby octopus was yummy. The seafood stew is actually not spicy(even though it’s in spicy tomato broth) and I loved the jerk duck. Cute place but not somewhere I would go back.

As soon as we got to town this year, we realized this was a new spot but I can’t for the life of me remember what was there last year. But they are doing bangup business for dinner and they deserve it. The drinks were great, the food is fantastic, and the plates are big– plenty to share. Don’t forget to upgrade to the garlic fries.

Our visit to Saltbox was a nice experience. I must say the Saltbox salad was actually our favorite selection, I really dug the textures and thoughtful flavors of the various components. The dressing was phenomenal. The portion was a bit small but that’s mostly because we enjoyed eating it so much, we just wanted more! We loved the creativity of the local corn appetizer, which on the flip side, was a larger portion than I expected. My wife said she liked the flavor of the grilled corn itself with the lime, but she was not enamored with the cotija cheese and chile topping. I thought it was cool and fun, definitely polarizing flavors, and not every bite felt to me like the corn and the spread were fully engaged. But still, high marks for bravery. For entrees, we kept it a little simpler. My wife got the burger, which she enjoyed so much I didn’t even get a bite. I ordered the dayboat scallops. They were served over cous cous. Everything was excellent, except again I was a little down on the portion size. Four medium sized scallops is a little weak, there was perhaps 3 – 4 ounces of protein on my plate. Even if they paid a hefty, upmarket $ 20 bucks a pound(which I doubt), they could have given me another scallop or two, get me like 5 to 6 oz of the featured item. Especially because I enjoyed the actual food I did get! The interior facelift was nice, not much was done on the exterior if anything, but I imagine that is a function of having a leased-space in a larger building. This is definitely a place we will return to in the near future, and maybe they’ll toss a bit more on my plate when they see my smiling face!

For a hot and new place they have some nice digs. This place is right off the main strip on Edgemere, the road that takes you to Montauk docks. Its a small yet classy beachy décor inside. I ordered to-go from here and it was ready within 20mins. I got the Lobster Roll(comes with fries), Saltbox Salad(comes with dressing on it unless you ask otherwise), and Garlic Fries. First, I didn’t know that the Lobster Roll came with fries although the few times I’ve order it out here it normally does come with fries. However, the Garlic Fries are awesome! The salad was eh, less leafy more fruit. The other thing that sorta bothered me was the menu. Online the menu is kinda limited but apparently they have daily/weekly specials that aren’t listed online. I guess if you’re ordering out ask what they are before making a decision. When I went to pick up my order, I don’t think they deliver, the bartender was really nice and smiled a lot. The music that was on while waiting for the check was rockin’! I noticed they have seasonal and local brews on tap including the Montauk and Greenpoint Brewing Company ales. I would come back for a drink and appetizer.

Stopped here for some lunch and a drink with my wife and we had an amazing experience. First off, the place is decorated beautifully. They have a nice small, solid craft beer selection and lots of mixed drinks, sangria and wine options too. We ordered the scallops and the fish tacos and both dishes were amazingly delicious. The owner was super friendly and the service was great overall. They were in the process of making a watermelon sangria which looked like it was going to be delicious. It helps when you can see that the owner and employees are all having fun. Do yourself a favor, go here to eat and drink!

Had a Saturday night dinner here with my boyfriend and was seated within a few minutes. Adored the ambiance — dimly lit and romantic, yet not awkward to come with friends and family. The waiter highly recommended the corn and the lobster roll, so we obeyed him and ordered those items. The corn was one of the best things we both had all weekend in Montauk. Big recommend. I just wish the cheese was all over the corn instead of just on the top. The lobster roll was also pretty delicious. It comes with french fries. That was enough to fill the both of us up for the night! The Saltbox is a worthy stop on your trip into Montauk.

What a change from what used to be here. We are Montauk regulars and had hear this place opened where an old time pub used to be. When we got there at about 630 the place was empty and we had a little trepidation. The menu looked great so we gave it a shot. Glad we did. The décor has improved dramatically, it’s kind of beachy classy. Nice big bar. The wait staff was polite, the tap beer selection was small. One of our party had the fish tacos. She looked great when they came out, the only disappointment was the fish, which was fresh, was fried. That wasn’t explained on the menu. Another guest had the burger and liked it a lot. Good size and flavor. Nice fries with it. I had the Korean lettuce wraps which were delicious. The flavor was delicious, the meat tender and tasty. I would have like to have seen the beef shredded instead of large pieces, it would have made making the wraps easier. We shared the Parmesan fries which were very good. People started coming in as we were leaving and we were sure to share our opinions with people we met on the beach. We wil absolutely return again.

I recently stumbled upon this newly opened gem in Montauk while on a much needed summer exodus from New York City. Naturally there was an hour wait without a reservation on a Saturday night, so we decided to start with a round of drinks at the bar. I opted for the Mango Coconut Martini: mango infused vodka, crème de coconut, pineapple juice, also garnished with a sugared piece of mango. The drink was perfectly balanced– the alcohol was only slightly detectable and none of the three flavors: mango, pineapple or coconut, overpowered the other. Absolutely refreshing, which is easily why this is hands down one of the best drinks I have ever had. Upon being seated, we ordered the Grilled Corn: local corn, lime, chile, cotija cheese($ 6). A recreation of Mexican elotes, the corn was drizzled with mayonnaise, but was not coated or submerged in the condiment. The heat from the chili was not overwhelming, the cilantro was fresh and the lime also offered a nice tangy kick. Blackened in all the right spots. My highly critical Mexican boyfriend was certainly impressed with their version of street corn. I would definitely recommend ordering this starter. For dinner, per Unilocaler Annabel T’s ingenious conception,(which I cannot thank her enough for), I modified the Saltbox Salad: beets, carrots, pea tendrils, cucumber, avocado, lemon-garlic vinaigrette by adding their Lobster Roll sans the bun to the entrée. Every vegetable in the salad as well as the lemon-garlic vinaigrette served to further escalate the taste and the texture of the lobster roll contents. So many unifying flavor profiles. Without words: #$!&@^%* this combination was not one of the best salads that I have ever eaten. This was the BEST salad that I have ever eaten. I feel so passionately about this that I shamelessly told a few waitresses that they should add the combination of these two entrees as a menu item. Seriously Salt Box, everyone needs to know about this.

Goodbye O’Murphy’s, hello Saltbox. It’s all about location and Saltbox is right on Main Street in the heart of it all. Your first steps inside will feel like a dream, well maybe not during peak hours because this place gets busy. Its clean, cozy, well furnished and the silverware gives a delightful touch. I visited during Happy Hour and I couldn’t have been more satisfied. Saltbox had me at $ 6 Stella drafts and Korean style chicken wings. I also enjoyed the Jeju lettuce wraps and Baja fish tacos. Fist pump chef for the Korean influence throughout the menu. I’m sure you’re fermenting cabbage in the back for winter time. Lol. Ian the bartendar is a rockstar and made our experience as fun as it was wonderful. I would without a doubt go for lunch and dinner no matter the wait time. Cheers!

What to do after soulcycle? Get beer and bites! This place is walking distance from the new Montauk soulcycle studio. Food was fab. Service good. Try this… 1. Ask for ranch with the fries. The fresh dill is killer in this little tub of goodness. 2. Order both the lobster roll and the salt box salad. Tell them to combine it together and hold the bun. Worth every penny. 3. Repeat…
