Old Del Monte Golf Course

I really expected much more from Del Monte. I guess there is a novelty that this is the oldest course in the Pebble Beach area, but it left a bit to be desired for $ 110. There was just no «wow» factor at this course at all, especially compared with Pebble, Spyglass or Poppy. I can see paying about $ 50 for this muni style course. The greens were lightning fast and did have subtle breaks that drove us nuts for the first few holes. I dropped 9 strokes from the 1^st 18 to the second consecutive 18. It also helped to know where to put my teeshot on #2 & #9. The 9^th hole was the most interesting being a nearly double dog leg to the right. Getting on in 2 on this one would be a real trick! The fairways were a bit burned out due to the drought, but I believe this is a very good thing. The course is not over watering and there is plenty of green where green needs to be, and brown where it should be: between the tee & green on par 3s and for 100 — 150 yards off the tee on the rest. Kudos to that! Final thoughts: overpriced for the golf experience. You are paying for the Pebble Beach label… otherwise this would be a $ 40 — $ 50 muni round.

I had a really nice time playing this course, it was not to hard so I could get through it without too much frustration. There was a hole we called «The marriage» because to took your balls away, I think it was like 11 or 12. It was not super expensive and the employees were all really cool. I wish I paid better attention because I thought we could pick up food at the turn so by hole 10, we were really hungry. Other than that, good times.

Love this course and the old layout. It is challenging yet fair and the small greens have some subtle breaks. They are working on some spotty fairways this year. Perhaps from the drought but still a fun round. Only drawback is not having a range but you can warm up at Monterey Pines just 3 minutes away.
After the round I highly recommend the chorizo burger with your favorite beverage.

Bottomline, do NOT waste your money! This is a dog track in very poor condition. I cannot believe this is associated with Pebble Beach!
I see some reviews in 2013 and earlier and these should be ignored. This course has some serious problems with condition, either due to lack of water rights, money, Pebble Beach priorities, or all the above. In its present condition, if you are a 15 or lower handicap, do NOT waste your time and money because the quality and condition of the course is probably important to you. If you are higher than a 15, you probably don’t care… no offense! Personally, I would not recommend this course to anyone!

The Golf Course: Played this course many times at $ 65, but at $ 110 it’s just not worth it.
The Bar & Grill: The wait time between taking one’s order and getting it to your table raises the question; «Is there a cook in the kitchen?»! I was wondering if the waitress cooked our meal! After all, ours disappeared only to return to put the plates on the table. There was one saving grace… several strands of her hair adorned our meal. Maybe that would explain why the place was so filthy.

Beautiful December day in California and I just got through playing the oldest golf couse in America west of the Mississippi. Well, they need to euthanize this one. While I’ve probably played worse courses, I can comfortably say this cow pasture of a golf course rates up there with the crappiest municipal you’ll ever experience! If the green fees were less than $ 50 or so I wouldn’t be so dissatisfied but they weren’t. $ 135.00 with a cart and I’m a guest of the Hyatt (hotel is right next door). Terrible condition issues through the green, patchy grass anywhere off the fairways and plenty of gopher holes to boot. The only saving grace were the greens. Well maintained and fast. There are many other options nearby for far less. At least it was better than working!

I am a handicap-​20 and this was a difficult course for me. very forgiving and open but some holes are a disaster if you get in trouble early. watch out for the 5^th, 9^th and 13^th holes.
For what you pay it feels like marrying the fat sister. With the beautiful PB links course down the street, all you do is wonder what it could have been. 5 stars for a great course and great experience, but save your money for the big course.

As a Duke’s member, i’ve had the chance to play this course quite a bit. Conditions are not as good as the other Pebble Beach company’s other properties, but it is always above average. As the oldest continuosly open golf course west of the Mississippi, it must have been a challenge to play this course using clubs with hickory shafts. A long hitter can easily over power this course, but he would still need some good short irons play and putting to put up a good score since most greens are strategically protected and have subtle breaks. It is a very walkable course, and because of that and the midcapper older clientele, including a greater percentage of the opposite sex, a weekend afternoon round can be slow. The restaurant is worth the visit after your round.

What a great course! And I didn’t even play! I was volunteering for the 1^st Tee open golf tourney and noticed the weather was better here than at that famous course a little further south. The weather was great, the grounds were manicured and the retail vendors etc., were super polite. Swing away! I will be soon… at Del Monte!

One of my favorite courses. Easy to walk. Lots of people look at yardage and think they’ll tear the course up. Three holes later they’re 4 over. Small greens, well maintained. Worth a visit.

This was a hard course to rate. It falls somewhere between a 4 and 5 star ranking, but it’s «bang for buck» ($ 40 including cart, as guest of a Dukes member) pushes it to a 5.
The course is a touch flat, and is the easiest of the courses managed by PB Golf. But it is in tremendous condition. Gorgeous green fairways, bunkers in tip top shape, greens smooth and fast…
My one negative mark is the lack of a true «signature hole.» Looking back, thinking about each hole, they don’t seem to have that one beauty etched in my mind.
This course can best be compared to Silverado in Napa, or Harding Park in SF. 4.5 stars!

Golf course is fine one of the best places to play, for the money, how ever
what ever you do don’t go to the course hungry. Our experiance this weekend was awful every person ordering food at the Del Monte Grill was complaining
on how long it took to get anything, 20 minutes is the fastest you can expect anything from the grill and that is there are only a couple of people waiting.
Very poorly ran.

We played Old Del Monte in between Poppy Hills and Spyglass on our three day golf trip to Monterey. I like this course even though the layout is nothing special. The course is sneaky in it looks easier than it really is. The greens are small and well protected. The pin placements can be outright sinister on some holes. The feel of the place is relaxed and can soothe the ego if you had a bad day at one the big course the previous day.
The rate seems high ($ 110) unless you area Duke’s card holder or guest of one. Then the rate is $ 42/​$ 52 weekdays, $ 59/​$ 72 weekends.

While well kept, Del Monte is uninspiring. The course is wide open with little that separate the adjacent fairway. Short par-​4, minimal rough and hazards, Del Monte’s playability for the average golfers, as in 100 average, is high. Yardage markers is also questionable as it seems to be longer than the actual distance.
The greens can be fast in the morning but became slower as the day progresses. The green’s speed, in combination, with undulating greens can catch some out. Unfortunately, my golf companion had so such trouble as he managed to single-​putt most of the holes.
All in all, Del Monte exudes a feel of a municiple golf course which isn’t a bad thing depend on your skills and golf course preferences. Would I drive to Monterey to play Del Monte? Most likely not! With Bayonet/​Black Horse, Spyglass and Poppy Hills a stone throw away, you will mostly find me there.

Big fan of this course. Classic design, great condition and great service. Just a very enjoyable course to play, sneaky challenging and lots of trees and bunkers.
Only distraction was a few of local dogs that was running around on the course around hole 13 – 14.
Can recommend to stay at the Hyatt which is walking distance from the clubhouse and just next to hole 18.

One of the cheapest ways to play a round of golf on the Monterey Peninsula.
Take some time before teeing off to read up on the history of the course so you can appreciate what it must have been like playing here in 1897. The only course older West of the Mississippi is the Presidio in San Francisco.
The course is not terribly difficult. Tee to green distances are short, the fairways are reasonably wide and there are a reasonable number of trees. Whether you have a natural hook or slice, either one will get you into trouble as the course is surrounded by OB markers on both sides at different points. Oddly enough, as you progress through the course, the homes get nicer and nicer. The house to the left of the first tee box is an absolute dump, but there are some beautiful homes on the Back 9.
All in all, the course is in decent shape, although I wish Pebble Beach Resorts would take a little more pride and work on some of the waste areas and bunkers. Definitely worth $ 100, but not much more.

What a lovely course. My daughter and Dad played here today. The staff was so nice and accommodating. It helps that it was sunny and 78 degrees. There is no driving range or chipping green. They have a great junior membership that is soooo worth it!

Del Monte is the oldest course in continuous operation wast of the Mississippi. It shows its age with maturity and grace. The course is well maintained, lots of mature growth surrounding and amongst the course. BEcause of this it is considered a fairly narrow course with protected greens and some distinct challenges.
Not as glorious as the seaside courses on 17 mile drive. But you are golfing in Monterey without paying Pebble prices. At $ 110, it is still pricey for the casual duffer. My recommendation is that if you are spending 4 or 5 days in the area to golf, come here first as a warm up them hit the big boys. You will learn some history of the area, get a little acquainted with some old school golfers, and have a nice day before you get truly pounded by the wind on the water.

Del Monte is one of the oldest courses in CA. It was built in 1897. Located right behind the Hyatt, it is a nice course to play. Basically flat with many trees. But hey, this is Monterey, and any day out playing golf is a good day.
It great for amateurs as stray shots don’t get huge penalties as in some other courses. Fees are reasonable given the range in Monterey.
