Wow, there are some tart reviews for this place — color me surprised because we had an excellent tasting experience here. This place caught my husband’s eye as we were strolling through Murphy’s so we popped in to give it a try. The tasting started off slowly because the guy was also attending to other tasters. We weren’t in any hurry though. After his other patrons left, he gave great explanations of his meads — or honey wines. We were blown away by a few of them, specifically the peach, apple, Irish mead and the habanero. We bought three of the four and plan to order the habanero when it is ready, as it was only available for barrel tasting. We did the full flight and shared a glass between us which was $ 8 and refunded upon purchase. We actually did like all of the tastings that were presented to us. So different, so unique! Next, I would like to speak to another reviewer’s comments on the owner being chatty. Yah, he is chatty. He is a great guy who offered us a wealth of information on not only the surrounding communities, but also information on his wines and how he discovered his great grandfather as well as his great great grandfather were also wine makers. His wife is also a poet who is set to release a book of poetry, and you could tell he was excited about it. I don’t know about anyone else, but my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed shooting the breeze with him, you can’t get more of an authentic experience than that. Now when we go back to Austin and uncork one of his fantastic meads, we will have some great background to tell our friends. And that is something that is truly special!

Other than some quick chatter from my savvy Irish friend, I don’t know too much about mead. Is it a wine? A beer? Enter Murphy’s Mead(a division of Wild Heart). My girlfriend and I ended up wandering into the shop, looking for a good Father’s Day present. Thankfully, with her purchase, I got to try all of their meads on the house — talk about lucky! It was my first tasting, but the owner was very friendly throughout. While their peach and apple meads were easily the best, their off-kilter mixes(rum & coke mead, margarita mead) were tasty as well, and went down easy. Now that this mystery has been solved, I look forward to my next visit.

Came here in October of 2011 and signed up for the wine club. Two shipments of wine were sent back because we are not home during the day to sign for them, however they charged my credit card for the wine. They have their money and I’m S.O.L. with my wine. Over the past couple months, I’ve e-mailed twice, left a voice message trying to change the mailing address of the wine to avoid future missed deliveries and no one has contacted me. I received a third shipment last month because I was actually home unexpectedly. I anticipate other shipments will be returned and my credit card charged because I’m not home during the day. Pretty crappy customer service. All I want is the wine I paid for and to change my mailing address so shipments are not returned. Guess I either need to stop payment or drive 3 hours to resolve it. FYI — some of the wine is good, and some not soo good.

Visited this tasting room on the President’s Day weekend. Bought 2 bottles of wine. The Cabrolet Rouge we opened was bad, definitely turned. Ended up pouring it down the sink and it wasnt cheap! I was very disappointed, since we had enjoyed the wines in the tasting room. I have left several messages asking them to call me back so we can discuss this, possibly a credit to my card or another bottle of wine. Horrible customer service! Cant talk to anyone, goes straight to voicemail and they do not return your calls. Their website is non operational. Guess I’ll have to go there in person just to deal with this, in front of other customers on the weeked and let them know how unhappy I am. Would have been alot easier just to return my calls.

Holy crap. This dude loves to talk! On our last visit to the tasting room, we decided we’d pop in real quick for a speedy tasting and to decide if we wanted to buy anything. Not speedy at all, really… the guy pouring the wine didn’t even START pouring until we’d been there for like 15 minutes… guess he was bored and really dying for a conversation or something. The tasting room is nice and big, with sparse but pretty cool décor. But the wines… meh, not really that good at all. One star extra for trying to be different with the white Cab Sav, but in all honesty, it kinda tasted like dirt to me. Meh. Ok the Chard wasn’t TOO bad, but I didn’t like it enough to buy any. $ 5 tasting fee per person. Despite the wines not being worth it, I still think anyone bitching about it needs to hush up because this is dollar-store value compared to what you’ll see in Napa.

I absolutely love this winery! This wasn’t one of the winery’s that our hotel recommend, we actually only stopped here because it was the only one open after 530!(everything closes early on Sunday in this town!!!) I personally prefer sweet wines, and wild heart winery had a sample barrel of a delicious honey mead wine called«Just Peachy» and it was the BEST I’ve ever tasted, if they had any in stock I probably would have bought a case!!! or at least a few bottles! My fiancé on the other hand loved the Cabernet Sauvignon, he fell in love! We left with a bottle! If it wasn’t so close to Christmas we would have bought him a case!!!

Not impressed at all… A group of 4 of us went to Angels Camp last weekend and went into Murphys for the day on Saturday. We had a great time everywhere we went, except for this place. The man who was pouring our tastings for us was so unbelievably rude. After we had agreed to pay for their $ 5 tasting fee(not worth it) he would pour the taste and then walk away, without giving us any information about the wine. Granted he was helping another couple at the time but he treated us like we were a waste of his time. We also noticed that they were cutting up chocolates that were to be paired with the reds on the description list. We hinted that we would like to try them and he still wouldn’t give us any. Not until one of my friends flat out asked him would he let us have ONE. We were so upset I don’t even think we finished the tasting. The wine itself was also not good. Two out of our group liked the Chardonnay(which is normally my favorite) but I didn’t care for any of them. To top it all off I noticed that they overcharged my cc for the tasting. I don’t know if there is a service charge for using a cc or if he decided he needed a tip of some sort, but I was not made aware of why I was charged more than everyone else. Will never come back to this place.

Flash alert! Brand new winery/tasting room in Murphys! Wild Heart Winery is the newest tasting room to open in Murphys. The wines are central coast varietals specifically from Santa Barbara County. Granted, most of the wines in Murphys originate in Calaveras County, Murphys has proven to be a wonderful location for tasting rooms. There is a $ 5.00 tasting fee if you want to taste all of the offerings. However, if you only want to taste a few, then there is no charge. I sampled the Saint Peters Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. My favorite was definitely the cab. While I am not usually a fan of cab, this cab was excellent. The fact that it was a 2003 may have something to do with that. Gorgeous bouquet and smooth taste. Superb. Even though the wines are not local, it is definitely worth a visit. :)
