This small local supermarket has been in Nevada City for many years, and despite the size they have an impressive variety of unique merchandise. It isn’t uncommon for them to have things I cannot find at other stores in town. This store does tend to be on the pricey side, so I don’t due the bulk of my shopping here simply due to my meager budget. But I don’t mind coming here if I only need a few things or want something special I can’t find elsewhere. In addition to groceries they also have a decent variety of housewares, hardware, reading material, camping supplies, and many other items reminiscent of an old fashioned store from days long ago. The meat counter is awesome, and I have never noticed it smell weird like a couple of other reviews stated. I also had to laugh at the out-of-town reviewer who complained they couldn’t find their way around the store. Isn’t it *normal* to not be able to find your way around an unfamiliar store? That’s hardly basis for a complaint. Everyone who works here is very friendly and if you have alot of stuff, the bagger will often help bring your bags to your car without even asking if you want help. Who else does that anymore? You can also buy stamps and send off your mail at this store, hence avoiding the annoyingly busy Nevada City Post Office.

Gross, overpriced, rude and smelly. They have an incredible lack of respect for their customers under 40. They take advantage of being the only local grocery store around and use it as an excuse to jack prices through the roof. It stinks of old fish anywhere near the butcher or produce area, the deli is overpriced and boring. I wish I’d never shopped here. If you make under 6 figures, use your money wisely and shop at savemart in grass valley.

I have such a fondness for this place. surprisingly good selection of local/organic produce. huge wine selection, lots of drugstore/home type items, old school deli, I’m a super clean eater but I always make my partner get corn dogs or chicken tenders(so gross!) because this market is just so damn charming and reminds me of my childhood even though I grew up in a land far, far away. Is there a word for being nostalgic for a place that isn’t actually a part of your past? Cuz that’s how I feel about SPD.

Good range of products for a local store, good quality produce, welcoming and helpful staff. Especially in the Post Office where they are more knowledgeable than the main Post Office in GV and definitely more friendly! Great deli for this area.

The classic neighborhood grocery, with kind and friendly staff. If you aren’t local you’ll feel like one after you leave. Excellent fruit and veg dept, and an excellent butcher. In addition, the hardware department may have what you need after the local hardware store is closed.

This was a last resort… I came into NV city at 3pm and everything was closed for food. Finally gave in and went to deli… very good sandwich and nice staff. The yam wedges were crazy good.

SPD gives me warm, fuzzy feelings. Yes, a grocery store gives me warm, fuzzy feelings. Let me tell you why: — My parents would always take me grocery shopping with them here. I remember me and brothers would be given one or two times each to go grab around the store and bring back to the cart. My parents put us to work, made grocery shopping easier for them, and maybe got a couple minutes of quiet/us not fighting. — The store has hardly changed, but not in a bad way. The general layout is still the same. Even when I go in there now, I remember where everything is. But they’ve made improvements here and there so that the store doesn’t look run down. — There are people working there that I remember working there from when I was little. Clearly, people like the working environment here and they are treated well. A family run grocery store is hard to beat! — Delicious, delicious sandwiches. Grab one before heading to the river and you will not be disappointed! Just be prepared for a wait — it’s no secret that these are good, so grab a number and wait patiently. Only downside is not being able to choose what bag of chips you get — it’s always the classic Lays.

A reasonable grocery store that carries all of the staples PLUS locally made yummies, PLUS an amazing deli?! I would move to Nevada City for this market. I found myself looking for food in Nevada City and the restaurants along the main street were a little stuffy for my current state of being. So I went off in search of a deli and I came across SPD and the huge«Deli» sign outside the building. What they hey? Let’s give it a shot. As I headed to the deli, in the back of the store, it seemed like a normal grocery store with the usual offerings. After placing my order(a veggie sandwich on sourdough) I started to look around and see the awesome. The case in front of the deli had local vegan tamales, a veggie coconut curry made by a local catering company, a huge selection of cheese and meats, local sushi and so much more. Everything was reasonably priced and, had I brought a cooler I would have taken it all home with me. The veggie sandwich was the best I’ve ever had. It was stacked high with cucumbers, peperoncino, sprouts, avocado, tomato, lettuce, cheddar, and pickles. OH, their pickles were crunchy delicious! It was a $ 6.00 sandwich that would have been $ 12 in Reno, definitely a deal. Even came with a cute little bag of Lays. On the way out I grabbed some organic beef jerky for $ 6.99. $ 6.99 for a decent sized back of jerky! That’s worth going back for alone. I am already planning my trip back with multiple coolers so I can try it all… and get another sandwich of course.

Local grocery store — a little more on the expensive side but they usually have what you’re looking for. Just a heads up — cell phone blocker at the meat counter: if you have a medical device that communicates over 900 mHz, maybe bypass this area…

SPD really is the best. I give very few 5-star reviews, but they deserve it. Their stock and selection is perfectly tuned to the local environment: a mix of regular groceries, organics, good wine and beer selection at reasonable prices, good deli sandwiches at good prices, a place to ship packages, even hardware, camping, and fishing supplies. I even bought a couple bike tires here once for my kid’s bike when the regular bike shops were closed. Service is always friendly and helpful. Many of the staff have worked here for decades, and that is a good thing in this case. They also support the community, donating to many local groups, schools, etc. One request: please put in a bike rack so I can lock my bike securely when I ride here. Otherwise, don’t change, you guys are great!

It is great to go to a market where the people know who you are and it has a real meat counter. The only thing I no longer buy from the meat market is hamburger. I buy the rest of my meats there though and freeze them up. Some great help there, and stocker’s who truly no the area that they work in so if something has changed, is missing or is new, they know about it if asked. And in many cases, can carry something for you if others would also buy it.

SPD is a great medium size market. I was running errands and needed chainsaw oil… when I got to SPD to do grocery shopping I checked and they had the chainsaw oil so that saved me a trip. Any supermarket where you can buy good meat, fresh produce, has a deli, and all the other daily needs such as chainsaw oil is great. Also, you can grab something to eat and head behind the store for a beer at Ol’ Republic. Some of the folks have worked there for years(30 or more) so that says a lot about that place.

SPD is my go-to market. They’ve got a quite good spice section(I BBQ and smoke meats often), very good meat and produce departments. And I like the fact that they still keep a really extensive section of simple hardware, camping necessities, and other notions, fairly complete wine section, a prompt and delicious deli section where they’ll make sandwiches to telepghone order, a good little bake goods section. What’s not to like? the check out staff are friendly; they know you and greet you. This is a quintessentially excellent, long-term family owned operation, like a pillar of my neighborhood.

We came to this store during our vacation to Nevada City to grab what we needed for a family BBQ. The store is on the smaller side, but has everything u need. Its a little on the run down side, but its clean. The store is layed out a little different than I’m use to, so it was a little hard to find everything I was looking for. But we managed to find everything. It did take a little while though. The clerk was friendly, and checked us out pretty quickly. They also helped load the items in the car for us without asking. The service was great!!! Nice little country market.

I LOVESPD! I love the little shopping carts they have for the kids to push around. My husband and I let our little guys push their carts they are so into it and what we put in their carts that they don’t ask for a million things. I LOVE their meat department and the wonderful quality meat, great sales and fabulous helpful employees. makes for a wonderful shopping experience.

One day I was really early for a Nia class I was going to take in this area. I had been told to go to SPD on McKnight because it was on the way back. I would have had to have gone after class all sweaty and cold(it was winter). But since I was so early I was driving around the neighborhood and found this store tucked in behind the brewery. It is huge. I am guessing it is THE store for the entire area because it has EVERYTHING. Camping gear, fishing gear, ya know the essentials? It has a BEAUTIFUL produce department. And honestly that is all that I have purchased here. The organic section is twice the size as the organic section in my «regular» grocery store. The whole produce section is always well stocked. This past time I was planning on going to a class up there I purposefully didn’t bring all the veggies I would need so that I could pop into this store. It is clean and well stocked.

Okay, Okay, I’m a little biased because my dad worked there for over 40 years, but still, this place is great. It has that perfect touch of small town charm where everyone knows your name, and usual business. I love their produce, deli, meat dept., and salad dressing aisle the most. So much to chose from. Their prices might be a little steeper than the local Safeway or Raley’s, but you get much fresher products in return.
