Today was my first time eating at Dozo and it won’t be my last. It was amazing. I had a wonderful experience. I called my order in and had great customer service. When I arrived to pick my order up everyone was so nice my order came out very quick and it was amazing. I am unable to eat seaweed and the chef did a wonderful job. I will definitely return

We did take out given the positive reviews of new ownership. Black miso cod sold out so substituted with sea bass… okay. Black bean sea bass was overly salty and very small portion of rice, about ½ cup. The sushi rolls were very standard and nothing special. The side salads that came with the meals appear to be Costco salad items. Will not return.

The ambiance for Saturday lunch was dark and quiet. This contrasted with some of the clientele who were speaking far too loudly. I can’t help but wonder if for this time of day the mood that the restaurant is trying to capture us just not approptiate. The food itself was fine, but not special. Everything tasted fresh. The tempura was crisp, the rice was well cooked, and the chicken was not tough. But the flavors were off. The soup was too sweet, the dressing lacked citrus, the chicken had too much black pepper, and the teriyaki was too wattery and lacked the rich flavors that one expects. One of the positives is that the restaurant is well priced. This restaurant has what it takes, but need to really richen up the flavors…

the only thing we don’t like about this place is that it’s not close to where we live! we were day-tripping and found this place, to our surprise and delight. I agree with another reviewer that the décor is a bit drab, and no music, but I can overlook that in light of the food… outrageously good! not many places have live uni either(frankly have never see it if it wasn’t pre-ordered), which we just had to get, being die-hard sushi lovers. we sampled a number of other sushi-type items, everything was super fresh(don’t know how they do it in mid-ct) and some inventive rolls as well, all very very good(and we’ve been to nobu in nyc). service was very attentive, but that might just have been because we were there midday, not too busy… but we’ve been to places where the slower the business was, the slower the service got. love love love! you need to open up another place in the bronx!

The sushi chef is the man! He is funny and takes tremendous pride in his trade, and does what he does very well. I can only speak for the sushi as A+ as I didn’t try anything else, but everything being prepared in front of me looked great.

Actually very good sushi and other food! Better than anything else in the New Haven area I’ve found, that’s why I drive from downtown to get takeout. I’ll admit, when i read these reviews I was expecting something a little higher end — the space itself isn’t anything special, a bit dank tbh. But the pricing is on point and the sushi is fresh. All you can ask for.

Tricky place to rate. Based on the reviews here, I came with high hopes. Overall, had a mixed experience, with great strength exhibited in one area, and weakness in another. The food is the area of strength. Of the roughly 10 items our party ordered, virtually everything was very good. Standouts included the tornado roll, the spider roll, several of the basic veggie rolls, and the pan-fried gyoza. The tempura ice cream didn’t taste much different than other places, but the serving size was 50% larger than I’ve seen it at most places. The only item that disappointed was the jalapeño yellowtail, which I’ve had far better examples of elsewhere. The problem here is that the restaurant is kind of a dump. The carpet has a damp, sticky feel to it and the entire place just needs a major cleaning. Secondly, on a recent March night, the restaurant was freezing inside; we were all wearing either sweaters or hoodies over our shirts/tops, and were still freezing. The woman at the table nearest ours just kept her coat on through her meal. There’s also no music playing and very little background noise, so people’s conversations are highly audible. Finally, the place was understaffed. Only one waitress and one woman helping out in the dining room and handling the takeout business, with 1.5 guys working the sushi bar(one guy kept disappearing for stretches, presumably working the kitchen as well). The waitress was trying, but inevitably, it took forever to get our drinks, check on us for refills, etc. Probably because of these issues, Dozo appears to do a lot of their business as takeout — at one point, there were some 4 parties in the restaurant waiting for their orders. Some of these folks were offered glasses of water while they waited, which seemed nice, but I found it bothersome that we were still waiting for our drinks, ordered some 10+ minutes ago. I might suggest that dine-in patrons be served before takeouts are offered a complimentary drink If they could clean up the place, run the heat to at least get the temperature into the mid 60s, and have another person on the waitstaff, Dozo could be 5 stars… the food is that good.

Dozo had Toro on the menu today and it was exceptional. Prepared perfectly, the quality of the Blue fin O’Toro was one of the best I have had. Fresh, not frozen this tuna belly is very fatty and has a totally different flavor than normal tuna. I am glad that Dozo can serve this level of quality fish. Too bad they don’t have it everyday! Thanks Benny and Lin.

Stopped in on our way home off the highway. Was surprised by the excellent sushi. It seemed to be very popular among the local Asian population.

Review is for the lunch special, which is a great deal for the amount of food they provide. The food is fresh, delicious, and well portioned. Great, friendly service, although I had to ask a few times to clarify their lunch menu(my fault for not figuring out the difference between the bento boxes and sushi lunch specials). We had teriyaki shrimp, salmon, a few vegetarian and fish sushi. Everything was delicious, including the miso soup and edamame. The restaurant itself is neat and clean with simple décor. I will definitely be returning here for lunch and dinner.

I usually go to Dozo for weekday lunch, so this is based on lots of those times. Service is always fantastic. My man Benny the sushi chef always hooks it up with a smile! There’s a lot of sushi places that have that same weird 8-piece sushi lunch combo with dried out fish and/or a California roll. Blaaaaaah. The lunch roll specials here are awesome. You can pick 2 or 3 rolls off a long list of choices that come with delicious miso soup and ginger-dressed salad. As they say, you gotta be fresh!

I loved Akasaka(formerly at this location) so I wasn’t sure how i would feel about Dozo but I must say, Dozo is actually better! The sushi and sashimi is fresh all the time, the edamame is hot and tasty, the green tea is fabulous and the wait service is second to none. We will continue to go back to dine here as we are never disappointed.

I had been hesitant to try Dozo since I wasn’t a fan of the previous restaurant. I am SO glad that we gave it a go! We had the wasabi tuna for an app. It was REALLY tasty but it could have been spicier(personal preference). The tuna was really fresh and melted in my mouth. We then shared the fancy Tornado roll which was delicious along with a regular salmon and avocado roll. Again, everything was really fresh tasting. Another hint that this place is worth it was it was really busy for a Monday evening. We also shared a few hot sake’s. I loved that they brought out the bottle submerged in a container of hot water. It was such a treat to have it stay hot to the last drop! We’ll definitely be back!

Upon entering Dozo we were immediately greeted and seated by the sushi chef. Shortly after being seated we were given warm towels to wipe our hands clean. Our waitress was extremely kind, informative and pleasant. The restaurant is dimly lit with ample seating the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a meal with your loved one. We especially enjoyed the sushi specials but wished we had more time before our movie to explore the menu. We can’t wait to go back for an entrée! P. s. The Rock Shrimp Appetizer is the bomb dot com and we highly recommend it!

Dozo was a great surprise for us as we just were in the area. The owner and sushi chef were very friendly, environment was also quite comfortable. Their sushi was fresh and very well presented. I would highly recommend their hand rolls. Besides the Japanese food, their curry chicken and beef were fantastic. Very full of flavor but not overwhelming. Wonderful all around, I would definitely go again.

Good sushi. Nice service. But, not as good as the other reviews would say. I thought the udon noodles in soup I had last time was mediocre and very disappointing. It’s okay, but not worth going out of the way for. The free tuna appetizer I had today was a very nice touch. I probably would have been happier with Five Guys today.

Sneakily good! Very impressed indeed. Food is subtle & full of flavor— non-sushi items are especially awesome(Im still incredulous over how amazing their Curry chicken is) Do yourself a favour & check this place out — -you won’t be sorry!

I came home from my life in NYC this weekend to find out that my favorite hometown restaurant Akasaka was under new management and now known as Dozo. I had been going to Akasaka for almost two decades and had a lot of memories and favorite dishes there. Long story short, Dozo is even better than the Akasaka. They are still serving both menus right now, but are transitioning to their Dozo menu only soon. The food and sushi were fantastic. The gyoza, pan fried, were terrific and flavorful. The sushi was all super fresh and we loved the duck spring rolls. The interior is still basically the same, which I’ve always liked, and the prices are really great. I was sad to see Akasaka go, but now that I’ve tried Dozo, I’m more than excited by its replacement.
