Sorry, but this place is overrated, IMHO. I found the service lacking and not overly friendly, particularly for when I came in with the disclaimer that I’d never been before(And why am I tipping you when it also turns out you don’t bring the food to the table and I’m the one bussing the table when I’m done?). When I was there for the lunch hour, there were no knives available. Really? FWIW, the avocado was good.

The«Super Salad» I ordered that cost me $ 13 was basically just a super amount of lettuce. I can count maybe 5 beans and a couple of veggies total… I’m talking they say«olives» they may have diced up two maximum… The dressing on the side couldn’t even cover ¼ of the salad because it was so bland and dry. 2 stars are a stretch. Never eating here again.

Mmmmm. Some of the best baked goods I have ever had. Probably the best chocolate chip cookies I ever had — top 2, let’s say. Their croissants with almond are amazing as well. I can’t wait to try all their stuff and savory items too.

Just discovered this place today. They have a huge array of delicious-looking pastries and excellent herbal, decaf, and low caffeine tea options. The chocolate dipped palmers are pricey at $ 4 but delicious! G Café is an excellent place to do work. The seating area is a large and bright room with huge windows, comfortable booth-style chairs against the walls, and excellent music which is fun but soft enough to be a backdrop for work. I just wish they were open later!

I love Café G for their coffee(with free refills) and bread. Their bakery items are great too but a bit pricey for my taste. They have tweaked their space adding comfortable benches and nice decorative touches. I appreciated the great service from the manager. It does seem like they either hire a lot of very part timers or have high staff turnover; a new person every week.

I had a triple chocolate cookie — gigantic and delicious. At 5pm on a Tuesday the place was quiet and peaceful, couch was cozy, WiFi was fast, got my work done without bother. Shout out to Isaiah and Nestor for great service and a fun conversation about how weird life is, and for not getting even the least bit upset when I accidentally knocked over three chairs… I was so embarrassed but instead of being mad, and since it was closing time, they handed me a free baguette. You guys are awesome, thank you!

I really want to like G Café… but I have been here three times over the past several months and the first time I received embarrassingly bad service from one staff member, the second visit was great(the staff member that gave me bad service wasn’t there that day), and the third visit I witnessed the same staff member that was blatantly rude to me several months ago be very disrespectful to an elderly customer. Although luckily this staff member did not serve me during this visit the fact that I witnessed such treatment of another customer sort of wrecked the whole experience for me. This is shame, because most of the staff here are friendly and professional and the pastries and bread are amazing. I will probably go back to G Café in a few months again and will hope that the owners have taken some steps to remedy their customer service issues.

I paid $ 24 for two sandwiches and a coffee. The coffee was weak, I had picked this place because someone said the coffee was good. One sandwich was the roast beef. Really lack luster. Pretty skimpy on the roast beef and didn’t have a lot of flavor. The other sandwich was the caprese with chicken and that was almost worth it. I will admit that the bakery portion of this place is probably their strong hold. Still this is enough to get me to go back to this place.

Good coffee and tea, great pastries, and underrated lunch. Staff is nice the bread is great and it is a quick grab. Don’t waste your time with Starbucks or dunkin. This is faster and better.

Came by mid-morning to have some breakfast & coffee. Cool, open sitting area with lots of natural light. Trendy with a slight industrial feel. Staff was semi-friendly. The person who took our order was nice enough– the other employee was meandering around, chatting on his phone & nearly bumped into me twice without so much as an «excuse me” — not cool! My husband ordered the french toast & felt that it was over priced for the quantity and pretty mediocre flavor. I ordered the avocado toast & it was *really* good. Eggs done perfectly, just enough avocado, slightly crunchy bread– although the bacon could have been a little crisper. Vanilla latte was pretty good, not a super robust flavor, but good.

I am a commuter user of this café, so I generally don’t sit inside but rather take my coffee to go. Generally I like this place, and it is convenient for me to stop in on my way to school or the commuter bus to Hartford. Also, I prefer their coffee options to blue state or sbux. The downsides are significant enough that I don’t look forward to stopping in like I did when they first opened. The thing about a place like sbux, only one block away, is that even with a long line you can expect to be in and out fairly quickly(10 minutes tops?). G Café is hit or miss with expediency and not because there’s a line out the door but because they cannot multi task. I find the women who work less friendly in general to customers than the men. Not only will you not get your order taken if the one employee that’s working the counter is busy making coffee, but they nor the other person that’s doing administrative stuff at the counter will greet you. It’s happened enough times that it’s not a fluke. Their attitude is a problem for me. I enjoy their locally made bread and pastries and will grab a coffee if the counter is empty but I don’t expect friendly or fast service anymore.

My office moved so needed to find a close by place to crab a quick lunch and this place is right next to it. Service is very friendly and place is clean and quaint. Food however I felt like was over priced. For $ 11 I got a meatless salad that was very good but I found myself still very hungry after. I also got the potato leek soup which I found bland, I ate a few bites and then tossed it. I came with coworkers as well(3 of us total) and we waited quite a while for our to go orders. There is one person in the back making all orders so at lunch time this caused quite a backup.(And I know this cause I could see her in the Open kitchen and the manager(I think) kept coming back to check on what was taking so long). My coworkers sandwiches were good but they also felt on the smaller side for the price. Overall food was good, but prices and wait time will probably limit our visits there.

I started this review by reading some of the others here. I agree with many that rate its coffee drinks highly. I’ve had their cappuccinos and lattes several times since they opened, had a few sandwiches and pastries and found them consistently good if on the expensive side. Being a neighbor living right here next to Pitkin Plaza, I’ve sat here for hours, enjoyed the ambience and the large windows looking out on all kinds of people activity and the changing four seasons. It’s a cool place, and the consistently large crowds attest to that. I also immediately spotted the review by Eli G., complaining about the spottiness of the wifi network and demanding that G Café rectify the situation, saying that it’s not acceptable for a café today to not offer reliable wifi. I half agree with that viewpoint, and it’s both halves of mine that motivated me to sit here and tap this review out on my phone while enjoying my cortado today. I agree with Eli that reliable wifi is a selling point for lots of cafes today, and that inconsistency is annoying to say the least. It can make cafes lose customers, and this inconsistency point has kept me away from G Café on more than one occasion. Wifi is advertised, and it has been there at times, but just as often, in my experience, it has not. Totally understandable once or twice, forgivable more times if you know the reason, and really annoying otherwise. I actually disagree with Eli G. on the idea that all cafes need to have wifi. I pretty much wrote a dissertation over several years at cafes in the Bay Area, and for that wifi was essential. But I always liked and respected, and still do, cafes that want to create their own vibe, encourage different kinds of atmospheres and social interactions. Computer users can be buzz-killing drones who sit for hours without as much as acknowledging others’ existence while not exactly contributing to the cafes’ coffers either(is a small coffee or tea enough to justify taking a table and heat, using water and electricity, and demanding speedy wifi on top of that? As painful as it still is for me to acknowledge, as a frequent computer-user myself… no, it’s not.). That’s why it’s more painful than it could be to give this place just three stars. I just had the most bizarre encounter with a staff member, who after ringing me up without a word for my drink, responded to my question about the wifi password by saying, «There’s no wifi.» This ensued a difficult back-and-forth in which it sounded like he was denying there was ever even wifi available for customers, and he seemed annoyed with me for asking to boot. It’s fine if you don’t have wifi. Just let us know what the policy/state of affairs is, and we can make our decisions accordingly(and not ask ‘annoying’ questions about wifi passcodes either). But, please, just be consistent. Put up a sign. Take«free wifi» off your Unilocal listing. And focus on greeting people, talking with them, and creating a positive atmosphere.

I flew up to New Haven to visit my fiancé and given the fact that it was an overnight flight, I wanted a nice hearty breakfast with a good ol’ cup of Joe. My fiancé showed me the Unilocal page for this bakery, and we both agreed to try it. We walked in and placed our orders of French toast, avocado toast, and chai latte. The chai latte came out first and was very frothy and nicely sweetened. I added a dash of cacao powder to add a touch of sweetness to the drink. After waiting for about ten minutes, our names were called. The French toast was a generous serving of three, golden brown pieces served with maple syrup and butter. The portion was just enough to fill you up without being overly bloated. The avocado toast consisted of two slices of bread, avocado spread, topped with poached eggs and bacon. I only wished that there was more avocado on each of toast. We will probably stop by to grab a cup of coffee and a snack whenever we are in the area.

A gem in New Haven, but I’m also particularly biased because it’s one of the only places I’ve been able to find that can satisfy my avocado toast craving out here in New Haven(albeit for more than $ 8). It has a clean, rustic interior that I find so very cute AND the café reminds me of California. It’s a great place to study since hey have free wifi(they do have soft music playing so if you like absolute silence, go to a library or something). Great place to have meetings/dates because they have coffee and extensive food menus. The food is top notch for a café and the service is fast. Staff was friendly(:

G Bakery has one of the best breads in town. I’m not usually a bread person, but I’ll definitely say that if I feel like eating a loaf of hunky good bread, I’ll buy it from G bakery. I got a loaf of their rye bread and it was light, spongy and really flavourful overall. I’ve also had their breakfast sandwiches here on occasion, as well as their croissants and other pastries. The savouries are much better than the sweets, fair warning. The coffee is a little watered down for my taste, a bit acidic. Prices are reasonable; a coffee and a sandwich will come up to just under $ 10 depending on what you get. The café is also located really conveniently on the cusp of Orange and Chapel, so really easy to get to regardless of where you live in New Haven. However, their customer service could be improved. The cashier is usually kind of lacklustre. Do note that they do delivery as well. My boss got lunch catered from here once and I have to say the sandwiches were top notch that day. I had a BLT and it was one of the better sandwiches I’ve had in a while! If you’re sick of Panera, go to G bakery!

Food is great. Breads and pastries are heaven. My only ding is that the flow is odd. I never feel like I’m standing in the right place. But everything else works.

Top first: get your breakfast sandwich in a «pragel»(pretzel bagel). Also, order your breakfast sandwich anytime of day. I’m a bit obsessed with their espresso drinks– it’s SO much smoother & less acidic than most places. The food is always really good, but somehow my final tab here is always about 30% more than I find reasonable– a tad overpriced. Likewise, nothing in their food cases has prices. Surprise! Your scone is $ 4! :) Wonderful atmosphere. Great place for conversation. Clean, bright, simple but not sterile.

Very good bakery with fresh German breads and some really great lunch options. Sandwich selection is great. They also did a fantastic job on the space, which is open, airy, and well designed. Looking forward to trying more on the menu.
