Wash and Wag Pet Grooming

A few months ago my family and I were preparing to have a family portrait taken with our dogs. I’ve been to this groomer before and never had an issue. That was until this visit. I made an appointment for my Yorkie to have a trim. After telling the groomer exactly what I wanted she did the complete opposite! We have been growing out her hair for years! Even after explaining that to the groomer she still took way too much off, and trimmed my dogs face and skirt way too short. When I came in to pick up my dog I was shocked and upset. I couldn’t help but cry. While ringing out I was noticeably upset and began speaking to the groomer about it, who was incredibly nasty. After asking for the manager I was told that she was «out» and they were not sure when she would be back. I then paid and left. Not before being totally disrespected and mocked. This establishment is has no respect for their customers wishes or for their customers pets. So thank you for ruining my family portrait and ruining years worth of effort of growing my dogs hair.

I bring both of my dogs to Wash and Wag and will continue to do so. They take excellent care of them and do a fantastic job cutting/​grooming them. If Rocky and Pebbles could talk, I’m positive they would agree.

There are some people who love animals from a very deep place in their hearts. There are other people who only make a living, or earn income from providing a service for animals. The people at Wash and Wag are the second type. Nothing else would explain their total failure to provide the most basic service to my pet, than simply a lack of dedication and minimal patience.
I own a cat. He’s seventeen, and I have had him since he was four months. I take him to the vet regularly, and give him the best care I can as a single pet owner. He is a handsome male tuxedo, in good shape, and as active as one could hope for being on in his years. He is loved by everyone, including the vets he has known, my family, and my friends.
After procrastinating for a long time, I decided to take Pooky for a professional wet shampoo, nail clipping, and good brushing. While it’s not common to do this with short haired cats, I thought he finally deserved the next level of grooming beyond what I have done for him with simple spray-​on products. Up until now, I, or a vet tech, had clipped him regularly. I also took him once before for a professional shampoo to a place in Hamden, about four years ago. He came back looking a great. I wanted to do it again, so I chose Wash and Wag.
I chose Wash and Wag, not because I knew anything about them first hand, but because the Hamden pet groomer is closed, and it is near impossible to find a place in this area that grooms cats. Even the Petcos, and Petsmarts in this area do not do cats. My guess is there is not enough money in it when you can charge double for a big hairy dog. So, for Wash and Wag, that meant no competition. Always a bad situation for consumers.
Wash and Wag gladly accepted Pooky, stating they have experience with cats and would happily shampoo, clip and brush. No problem. Wrong. It was a problem.
Two hours after dropping him off, I received a call from one of the girls who worked there, telling me they couldn’t shampoo Pooky, couldn’t clip him, and couldn’t apply waterless shampoo. In short, they couldn’t do anything. On questioning them in disbelief, I was tiold that he could not be handled for anything without being sedated, and to come pick him up.
So, here’s my problem with Wash and Wag. I don’t believe for a minute that the people who work there have any meaningful experience whatsoever handling cats. This place is dominated by dogs, dog groomers, and dog-​centric employees. If they had any clue about cats, they would know that you can not handle them like dogs. While its true, they are a special challenge, they are not impossible creatures. Cats go to vets. They get trimmed, They get shampooed. They get handled. They get loved. They give love. All you need is a modicum of patience and an understanding of these beautiful animals. The crew at Wash and Wag clearly has neither. There is not a doubt in my mind that the person, or persons who attempted to handle my seventeen-​year-​old, docile Pooky, handled him roughly, with short patience, and no love at all in their hearts. In other words, the least involved type of pet grooming person you want your pet around.
Wash and Wag should not accept cats. They should stick to what they are comfortable doing. The easy stuff of dogs who stand still obediently and require no humanistic approach to comforting beyond a rubber bone or biscuit.
If you are a cat owner, you would be wiser to look elsewhere if you value how your pet is handled. It is clear to me, after this single defining experience, that Wash and Wag’s groomers are positively not capable of caring for cats. In fact, I would even say that they probably don’t even like cats at all.

My boyfriend made an appointment a week in advance to have our chow mix and Chihuahua mix clipped, groomed and their nails cut. When he got there, they somehow didnt have them down for a cut. Sot it was already a wasted trip. But, he decided to leave them for a wash/​nails/​brush teeth visit — we can easily wash them at home! When he came back they charged him the full amount they had quoted including the haircut. which was more than we pay in Milford. To make it worse, when we got them back they had shaved the small dog’s face haphazardly down to the skin in some places, and cut off all her long eyelashes, normally about an inch and a half long so that they are little stubs about ¼ inch long. She now looks very strange and bug-​eyed, but worse her eyes have been watering like it really bothers her that she now has no eyelashes-​). Never going back.

They do a $ 5 nail cut which is the best price you can get. They do a pretty nice job, and I never have to wait.

They deserve 5 stars for having to trim the claws of my savage cat every three weeks.
Even when he attempts to shred them as they hold onto him they maintain their smiles. They can do what I cannot.

I use to LOVE Wash and Wag. Due to my last experience, I swear to you I will NEVER return. Completely my fault for not noticing until I got home but my dog’s haircut was HORRIBLE. Very sloppy, choppy and uneven. I spent damn near $ 50 for a terrible haircut. They will not be seeing me and my pooch again.

I can’t give these groomers any less than five stars because they did what I would never be able to do myself, and they were super sweet and seemed to genuinely care about our dog.
We brought our little guy to Wash and Wag last Saturday because he really needed his nails clipped, and we were too scared to try to do it ourselves. (We adopted him four months ago from a rescue/​re-​home situation, and his previous owners told us that he didn’t like getting his nails clipped by them.) Nail clipping is only $ 5 and can be done on a walk-​in basis, but we figured since we were already bringing him to a groomer, we should also do a full bath and get his ears cleaned and teeth brushed. Adding on a teeth brushing was only $ 3, which I couldn’t believe because this is something else I would never try to do myself. (I imagine it would be a messy disaster.) The grand total was about $ 29 for the whole shebang, and our dog came out cleaner than we’d ever seen him before, complete with clipped nails, fresh breath, and an adorable bandana.
I decided to bring our dog here after reading all the positive Unilocal reviews, and I think word gets around. The place was pretty busy on Saturday when we brought our dog in around 9 a.m. (drop-​offs for grooming are between 8:30 — 9:30 a.m.), and we got him back around 1:30 p.m. It was worth the wait, though, and I loved getting him back at the end of the day — we went from the morning with lots of barking, scared dogs getting dropped off, to the afternoon with a floor covered in fur and lots of happy dogs excited to see their owners. We’ll be back!

First time here. Dog looks great and the staff was very professional. He appears to have had a good experience. We will come back again.

We starting bringing our king charles cavalier puppy a few months ago as we were having trouble clipping his nails and trimming his paw hair (we have hard wood floors and the poor little guy was slipping all over the place). They do a great job and even send him home with a cute bandana! Recently, our puppy had knee surgery and we were worried about washing him ourselves. Fortunately, wash and wag assured me they could handle it and took extra care of Charlie. I’d recommend them to everyone. It’s hard to find places now a days that truly care for your pet and can deal with the owners’ separation anxiety ;)

I had a promising career as a male underwear model until I adopted my cat three months ago.
My body was soon covered in deep cat scratches in every phase of the healing process. There’s only so many times your feline friend can rip your skin open before you decide its time for a change. I decided I would attempt to cut my cat’s nails myself. Three weeks later after I healed up enough to leave the ICU, I decided that I needed a professional that could handle a cat that interprets an attempt to cut his nails as an attempt on his life and acts accordingly.
My roommate suggested PetCo. But every time I go to PetCo I end up having an awkward conversation with the cashier. There’s only so much that can be said about cat food – no matter how much that guy thinks otherwise.
Anyway, I noticed that Wash and Wag had great reviews and only charged $ 5 for a walk-​in nail clipping. The price was right and that awkward dude from PetCo was almost guaranteed not to be there.
There is easy street parking and a small but adequate parking lot behind the building. When I walked in, there was a woman eating her lunch while standing up in another room. It’s sort of like the Portland/​Brooklyn/​Austin of pet groomers. A few more 20-​something females were walking around. A very pleasant woman approached me and asked what I needed. I told her I had an attack cat that needed his nails done. She asked me his name. She really didn’t need to although I guess it’s always good to know the identity of the thing that rips your eyes out.
I waited for about 5 minutes in the small reception area about 15 feet away from the side room where two women bravely faced off against my furry demon. You have to understand something, they had a very difficult customer on their hands. And yet, they returned him only after a short time. I saw that he had scratched one of the women on the arm. I apologized only revealing a little of how awful I felt. She said it was no problem and the genuine smile on her face never faded. I made sure to leave a large tip because these women did such a great job and did what I was finding to be impossible.
These women are so great, I might come back to get my own nails clipped. Or maybe I’ll just adopt more cats just so I can take them here! I don’t know, I’m too satisfied to think clearly right now.

This is the first time I’ve needed to have my longhair dachshund professionally groomed. Usually our home bathtub is sufficient to clean him up. But recently he developed some mats that I was not comfortable removing myself so I turned to Unilocal and found Wash and Wag. Wow! Jennifer and her staff are very professional and the facility is clean and organized. Best of all, my pup was returned to me pristine, all mats removed and his coat is simply gorgeous again. Forget the home bathtub, we’re converts to Wash and Wag!

A couple of months ago I found a Persian mix kitty in very bad condition — starving, eye infection, severely matted, dirty fur. After eye surgery, one month living with an Elizabethan collar, and medical treatments, she was finally deemed healthy enough to be groomed. I was afraid she would be stressed more while being shaved and bathed. Jen, the owner of Wash and Wag, promptly agreed to allow me to be in the room while my kitty was being groomed. I even helped Kari, the groomer, feeling quite useful. Kari was sensitive and efficient. And the price could not have been more reasonable.
I highly recommend Wash & Wag.

Best price around ($ 5.00) to have your dog’s nails clipped. They do it right away and no appointment needed. For grooming they want you to drop the pet off between 8 and 8:30 AM and they close early, at 2:30. The owner is a bit terse but that’s because she likes pets better than people.

In a place known for dog grooming, Joan whispered my terrified cat into a calm submission while giving her the perfect cut east of Los Angeles. I’ll be returning and the prices are incredibly economical. Quick, thoughtful and humane service. Thanks Wash & Wag!

They do a great job. My dog always looks great when he leaves there. He almost looks forward to going! Pricing is reasonable also.

Seamus and Holly, my lemon rescue Bassetts love going to Wash & Wag… they just came home from a recent bath and smelled so good, and looked so soft… that I can’t wait to bring them back. This price point is unbeatable and the staff is friendly and accommodating.

I’m surprised that no one else has written a review for them yet. I got my two (short-​haired) dogs groomed there recently. The people were nice, and while I haven’t had my own dog before, it seems like they did a good job (especially considering that the dogs were adopted from a shelter recently and probably hadn’t been groomed in quite awhile!). They have their own parking lot behind the building, which is nice – just keep an eye out for the driveway; there’s a sign but the driveway itself is easy to miss. The entrance is on the left side of the building (if you’re standing on the street/​sidewalk). Very reasonable prices, and cute bandannas. :)
