This Rita’s was probably the only place in New Hope that was serving something edible this past Saturday that did not have either a line/wait of some type. We ordered two regular Cherry Gelatis and while both looked good the cherry ice had almost no flavor. The custard was custard as obviously it’s hard to screw up vanilla custard but the ice had neither any fruit chunks or much or any flavor and came across as a flavorless mush. It was nice to have something cold as the sun was hot but at the same time it was disappointing from a place that boasts flavor to serve something without any. Cheap owner cutting costs?

I thought I liked Rita’s, I really did. Maybe it was because the last time I had one I was closer to being a kid than an adult, but when I drove past a Rita’s Water Ice in New Hope, PA I had to immediately stop and have one. My expectations got the best of me. I am no longer a kid nor even close to being one and the intense flavor of RIta’s cherry ice is no longer red-mouthed nirvana, but an exercise in consumption over brain. When I taste it, I taste artificial cherry flavor. The kind that tasted like the nectar of heaven when you were five, but now which tastes like over-processed sugar treat on ice. I also added the custard top which made less sense to me now than ever. It’s an ice with soft-serve custard on top — basically it becomes a creamsicle. Another thing that was awesome when you were seven until you really thought of having an orange ice with some milky, sugary substance coming out of the middle. At the end of this day, I understand why people go to Rita’s. Ice is refreshing and cool treats are excellent and it can most definitely serve its purpose. However, also at the end of this day, I understand why, as an adult, Rita’s has really lost its luster.

People claim to serve Italian ice or gelato here in the Pacific Northwest, but until you’ve had one from Rita’s, you’ll never know the best. A great way to cool down on a hot summer’s day. My only complaint about Rita’s is that they’re not here in Seattle.
