I used to love this place but the last meal has me trying to find a new Chinese place in the Summit area. The food quality as dropped significantly over the past year.

We have been ordering takeout from here for a few years. Decent food. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere although we have never stayed to eat.

Our family is in a comfortable rut as regards Chinese take out. For every day take out, we love Hop Hing here in Berkeley Heights. For special occasions, we patronize Meemah in Edison or Cathay 22 in Mountainside. Recently, a steady drumbeat of superlatives on Facebook prompted us to give Fan a try. We ordered online. Accessing the web site was very difficult. No luck viewing the menu on iPad or iPhone. Had to dust off my wife’s Mac. But, we finally placed an order. Ribs, fried dumplings, schezuan wantons, orange beef, coconut curry beef and roast pork fried rice. Our order was slightly delayed but I was ultimately handed a big bag of treats with a smile and appreciation for coming in. So how was the food? My son was really looking forward to comparing the ribs to Hop Hing. He advised that these ribs were the clear winner between the two restaurants. He was really pleased. As for the balance of the food, it was pleasant standard fare Chinese. No stand outs. Nothing objectionable. The dumplings and wontons were doughy but the fillings were very tasty. My wife wished her curry dish had more vegetables, I wished my beef was more beefy so to speak. Very thin fried very crisp. Good sauce though. The fried rice was better then Hop Hing. No chunks of carrot which I hate. I see some more visits in our future and then we’ll retreat back to our comfortable rut.

There was a large piece of hard sharp metal in our meal. I called the restaurant and they said this has happened before! If this piece of metal had been ingested, the person would suffer serious GI tears and bleeding requiring surgery and possibly result in death. We were offered a free lo mein.

Ordered takeout twice and both times were perfection. Great prices along with great food. The lunch specials come with a side of rice and choice of soup or egg roll. Ordered the sesame chicken lunch special and the chicken itself was enough to fill me up. Big sized portion with a side of rice. Wonton soup was yummy as well. Inside is very nice, will have to dine in one time. Online ordering is a nice convenience. They do have a lot of competition in the area: DIm sum villa and another chinese restaurant up the road. But I say they are doing very well. Friendly and attentive employees.

Nothing short of excellent rating for my favorite Chinese/sushi go to place. Taste and quality is always consistent. Service is always great. On top of great food and service this restaurant is a BYOB!

I know better than to order sushi from anywhere on a Monday, but I did yesterday… it was not fresh. The sushi looked bad, which prompted me to smell it, and it was just about on the verge of turning. I would have sent it back if I wasn’t with coworkers who ordered the Chinese food — which I never order from here because it’s terrible. Thank god I didn’t get sick, but I spent the rest of the afternoon wondering if I would be. The service here, as always, is terrible. I really felt like I wasted $ 15 on lunch yesterday and it will be a while(if ever) before I come back.

I am so, so disappointed. We are long-time repeat customers and our family loves the food at Fan Bistro. But our experience tonight was just terrible. We placed an order online as we have done many times in the past. After 90 minutes and no food, I called to find out what happened. The staff assured me that the delivery was already on its way. 15 minutes later and still no food. We called a second time and were told that the delivery was on its way. Another 15 minutes later and STILLNOFOOD. So now it has been over two hours since the order was placed. We called again and were told that they had never received our order, there was some sort of mix-up and our food was ready if we wanted to come pick it up. Since the kids’ hearts were set on it, we went to get the food. But in my mind their behavior is inexcusable. Don’t tell me the food is on its way if it isn’t! We will be searching hard for any other restaurant to order from. And we will be spreading the word about the way they treat their customers. Very very disappointing.

I can’t express enough how much I love this restaurant. I eat here almost weekly and it is always delicious, well priced, and the fact that it is a BYOB only adds to the value. The sushi is excellent and a great deal for the price — some of my favorites are the spicy scallop roll and the shrimp or chicken tempura rolls. I have also have the crunchy white fish roll and the sweet potato rolls. The fried cheese wontons(?) are delicious. I have also had the tofu teriyaki and the beef chow fun. The service is usually extremely fast and polite. I will continue to eat here for a very long time.

Dissent Food, HORRIBLESERVICE! Be mindful of this restaurant OVERCHARGING your CC(credit card). When I called to ask them about it. The argued with me insisting I was wrong, although I have proof.

Old standby for three items. Where else can you get legit general tso chicken, a standard issue egg roll, AND delicious specialty sushi rolls delivered to your door in 45 minutes? Not many places do both Chinese and sushi well, but fan bistro won’t disappoint… unless you order the pad Thai — the pad Thai wasn’t great. But hey, two out of three(asian genres) ain’t bad :)

Ok so basically Fan Bistro is two sides of the coin. On one side you have the food which is absolutely fantastic for reasonable prices. Got the edamame, California roll, chain reaction roll and the angry dragon(the best for my money). All were excellent and we were very happy with it. Now the problem is the service. It is absolutely dreadful, took an hour to an hour and half and the place was not crowded. At one point I considered biting my arm off. Its really a shame because the food just does not deserve the service it receives. I’m not sure if I’d come again, perhaps just try takeout.

This place is excellent! It was our first time here. They have not only sushi but Chinese food as well. The food was great and prepared very nicely. I eat a lot of general tso chicken and this is some of the best I’ve had. The atmosphere is amazing. Very well laid out and luxurious, the seating is great with pillow and soft cushions for all their customers. Our waitress Carries was great! She was kind and friendly, brought us everything we asked for and checked in with us many times throughout the meal. What was most shocking was the check! $ 30 for a meal for 2 with sodas rice and full entrees! We will be returning here for sure.

Not bad but nothing to get excited about. They commit no egregious errors. However the food is dull and a bit bland. Won Ton in particular needs a boost. I’ve only used it for take out and in fairness, it works.

Ive been coming to Fan for about a year now and their food is always great! Minus one star because the service is hit or miss but i am never disappointed with the food. Today i got 3 sushi rolls and with tip my bill was a little under $ 13! Unbeatable. I got the salmon avocado, white fish tempura, and sweet potato roll. All delicious. The tempura rolls are usually too big to eat in one bite gracefully but oh well. I also love getting their bento box dinner combos when i am reallllly hungry. The bento box comes with soup, salad, dumplings, a 6 piece california roll, shrimp tempura, THEN rice and your entrée choice. It is sooo much food and it is all great. The steak teriyaki is never overcooked and falls apart in your mouth. This is my go to place for asian food in this part of jersey! Oh and it’s BYOB so i also love coming here for lazy date nights.

Updated review for the new Fan Bistro. Impressive décor. So many things I wish I can ask them where they get from them like the soy sauce bottle. Came around 9 on a Thursday night. There were about 10 people. They have the half priced sushi so we ordered a few. Took a while. There were only 2 sushi chefs and I guess everyone else was also ordering sushi. The maki rolls are on the bigger side, more rice and more fish. They will definitely fill you up. I am not impressed by the rolls though… I think East still offers better sushi in the area. But the noodle soup is money here. Ordered the duck noodle soup. Came in a big bowl enough for us to share. You can pick from 4 different kinds of noodle and it is 7.95 cheap. The broth is rich and authentic in flavor. The bok choy is fresh tasting and soaked up the good flavor. The duck is tender and reminding me of roast duck from Chinatown. Can’t wait to come back for more noodles! Service is good and cordial. Above average for a Chinese restaurant.

For those of you who haven’t been here in a while(or ever), the sit-down restaurant portion is finally open! The configuration of the original restaurant has been changed so it is just a large counter for take-out orders — you enter the restaurant from the parking lot. The menu has changed very little on the Chinese food end of things, but a decent Japanese/sushi menu has been added. The restaurant has some high-backed booths along the walls along with regular tables through the rest of the space. It’s a bit darker than you’d expect from a Chinese restaurant, but the ambiance is quite nice — a little bit more romantic, if you will. They’ve barely been open a month, so I’m not going to be too nit-picky with the place. The food was solid, as usual. The pan fried dumplings were out of this world — they definitely don’t skimp on the meat like many places do! The Man enjoyed his chicken with broccoli as he usually does, and I was quite satisfied with my beef chow fun. Our entrees were served on standard white china, and everything was quite tidy. The service was prompt and friendly even though the restaurant did start to get crowded while we were there.
