Gandhi Statue in Union Park

I pass by this statue almost every day, and I love it. It adds a really nice historical/​cultural touch to a way too crowded-​and-​touristy area :)

Very nice statue of Gandhi. I passed it many times without realizing it. Then I saw this on Unilocal while I was checking in to a business nearby. And had to check this place out. I loved it.

Mahatma Gandhi, midstride, walks across the wildflowers of a landscape with unruly foliage that calls to mind a time before Union Square was settled by hawkers, skateboarders, TV crews and commuters. From a certain angle, you could almost forget that you’re in New York city. Unassuming, he reminds us of the incredible journeys that we can forge for ourselves if we only gave ourselves the opportunity to embark on them.

When I was in high school I saw the movie Gandhi. My parents were thinking of moving to another city for my senior year of high school. I did not want to move. So, inspired by this movie, I went on a hunger strike. I did not eat for a day. They decided not to go.
I asked them recently about it. My dad wasn’t upset, he thinks it would have been the same thing in another state. So now I see it as a little manipulative, not so righteous. My parents were open to communication, I could have expressed myself. But I do think non-​violent protest is a powerful option for expressing yourself.

An emaciated man, simply dressed, leans heavily on his stick as he walks forward. It is a profoundly simple tribute to a man whose message was also profoundly simple– that there is great strength and courage in the choice to be peaceful.
There are no colonnades, no cherubs, no flags, no eagles, just a man, alone, amongst us but a little higher up. He looks at the ground in front of him, grins as if realizing something wonderful, and keeps walking forward.

Set amid flowering plants, this statue of Gandhiji is an impressive tribute.
