This place was a favorite of mine. Sad to see it go. It always seemed pretty busy. Anyone know why it closed? Have the owners opened another place since it was closed?

Finally it’s CLOSED! I went here to try a nice plate of southern biscuits and sausage gravy. It was the most disgusting meal of my life, and I just paid my bill, left the full plate on my table and left. It was as if they melted a whole stick of salted butter on my plate, it was completely inedible but being passive like I am I just paid and left. The service was also horrible. Great location, great menu, not executed well at all.

This place went out of business, as it should have. It never earned a right to exist in the first place.

Great southern food, and that’s coming from a boy from Mississippi. The owner seems to over-sell a bit but that’s nothing odd. Friendly service, great cakes. It’s not a fancy or even polished type of place as I’ve seen some people here grumble about, but that isn’t what it’s supposed to be about. And those complaining about it’s less than ‘fabulous’ décor really have absolutely NO business in the Village anyway. Check it out and see for yourself. While no food will ever be as good as mama’s, Southern Gourmet Pantry runs a close second. And I like their cute dishes just fine, thankyouverymuch!

oh, dear god — this place is the prime example of nice presentation, baaaad taste. i tried it drunk once, and in my inebriated state, i still remember that it wasn’t good news. i remember the red velvet cupcake being very moist, but lacking in flavor(it was either too sweet or tasted like nothing — i kept on taking tiny bites to test). they’re overpriced as well. ugh, how are they functioning in such a prime location? stay away. stay far, far away.

Stumbled in here for a post lunch dessert today. Me: Club soda 1 scoop ice cream My companion: Iced coffee 2 scoops ice cream Bill: $ 12.95 + tip = $ 15.00 Ouch. Sorta pricey! Atmosphere isn’t all that, and«no air conditioning» means your ice cream is melting by the time it reaches your table. I’m just not impressed. Sorry, but cute dishware doesn’t cut it for me.

We were politely informed if we were only ordering desert we would be asked to leave if someone wanting dinner entered. The interior seemed eerie — it felt like I was some where in the south — the staff seemed odd and kept overselling their goods to everyone that approached. Not easygoing at all — just kind of, well odd. The desert(sweet potato cheese cake) was excellent. The coffee was decent. The dinners looked deep fried.

I would like to give 5 stars for our waitress’s eyeshadow, 4 stars for cute dishware and maybe 3 stars for the display of baked goods. The actual food is pretty bad & deserves 1 star, but we had an entertaining time watching the staff interact with the patrons so will round up. One of those places where when reading the menu I wanted everything. I was hungover & my need to feed my booze-still-sloshing stomach with grease made the chicken & waffles, fried green tomatoes, Southern breakfast platter, cheese grits, mac & cheese & basically everything on the menu sound like a must-have. My 2 friends & I all got different things & it was unanimous that nothing was good. Grits were a strange pink-orange color, FGT were so thick & watery with odd batter, eggs were super runny, coffee was weak. All that aside, I don’t know, the place kind of made me happy. It’s just very hokey & different. The blissful ignorance of the proprietor of being in the West Village & just sort of moseying around, serving up mediocre pie & chocolate milk made me smile.

Bourbon Street is a shrine to my inner fat girl in a bikini, named Lola Eatalot! I’ve yet to try the meals, but this place is the holy grail of desert goodness! The deserts are detrimental to you health and at $ 5 a slice is pricey, but well worth it! Despite the disturbing pink paint(Harry Potter anyone) the place serves its purpose, to serve good food and make you feel comfortable. The dining room is small and your on top of other guest. BSSG, serves pies, cakes, ice cream and a smörgåsbord of spice and sauces. I can’t concentrate on this review because I’m hungry just thinking about BSSG. Stop reading here and get to BSSG as fast as you can. You can thank me later.

A good 4 stars from moi! Wow. A some good olé’ homestyle southern cookin that I actually like. Maybe because it just feels clean. I mean, this is the only clean feeling southern restaurant I’ve ever been to.(ahem… unlike pink teacup… roscoes). I had the bbq chicken sandwich which was surprisingly tasty and delicious! What else… the cheese grits were good. Especially with the hot sauce. The owner likes to give you the run down on all the hot sauces she has. What a variety! She also gave me some special cajun mayo to eat with my fries. The red velvet cake is supposed to be award winning but I thought it was a bit too rich for my blood — I will stick with Amy’s Bread’s red velvet thanks very much. But overall, this place was great!

Food is good, some of it is really good. The people who work here are all so sweet. The owner lady however is horrible. HORRIBLE. She hates her customers, she hates her employees, she is entirely miserable and belongs on some island by herself so only she can hear her crazy lady mutterings. Food is good though, you’ve been warned… don’t get near the owner lady.

If you don’t eat here, you’re fucking psychotic. PSYCHOTIC. Food is delicious, they have like, 800 different types of hot sauce(complete exaggeration). Their sweet tea is delicious. I want to jerk off on the steps its so good.

Another great restaurant that I wish was in the Bay area… Walking around West Village looking for food. I was actually looking for a café that offered al fresco dining. Wanted to have a scone. drink some coffee. Enjoy the great weather. And then I saw the words SOUTHERNGOURMETPANTRY… *puts on the brakes* Walk in. Ceiling fans going at a hypnotizing speed. Nice breeze flowing through. The décor is definitely Louisiana style. Nicely greeted by the worker. Note: She’s definitely not from the south. Her accent gave it away. She’s a New Yawker. Fo sho. She’s still very sweet though. Look over the menu. Buttermilk Fried Chicken and waffles. Meatloaf sandwich. Pecan pie. Biscuits and sausage gravy. And many, many more. And what is this… Are my eyes deceiving me? SOUTHERNSWEETICEDTEA. FUCK… ME… GOOD… YEAH… Went with fried chicken fingers & fries & coleslaw. passed on the fries and ordered mac & cheese. Had one sweet tea with lunch and one for the road. The low down: chicken fingers were DAMN good. Big pieces. crispy. flavorful. coleslaw — so awesome. creamy. a bit sweet but a bit tart. just right. mac & cheese — this was the star of my meal. pretty large portion for a side. every bite was cheesy goodness. downfalls to this place — small. only seating for about 15. NOSUBSTITUTIONS. So my meal was $ 11 and even though I told them to hold the fries, I still had to pay $ 5.50 for the side of mac&cheese. no free refills. the sweet tea was $ 2.50. no free refills. take credit cards with total over $ 15 they carry an impressive, hand picked selection of hot sauce from all over the US. Eugy likes his hot sauce, so I picked him up a 4 mini bottle pack of their best seller. Overall, this place is just great. Seriously. I’m from the south. So my opinion ISPRICELESS. :)

this place is such a find. go for a slice of their amazing cake or a cupcake and a latte with friends or go for dinner, or both. the cakes are really amazing — SO much better than that nasty magnolia around the corner. dinner food is so comforting, all the southern specialties are there — try the fried green tomatoes. and to top it off, the staff is super low-key and friendly. if you go a few times you become old-timers and insiders. the vibe of the place is really relaxing — a little vacation from nyc. this place is a GREAT addition to the west village.

Ever since its erection about a year ago, I’ve made numerous attempts to dine at Bourbon Street, the Southern gourmet pantry on Hudson with a strange Rocky Horror Picture Show vibe. It must have been about 4 attempts in total, and each time, the place was either closed or was no longer serving. I was left hungry and annoyed. My boyfriend thinks it’s a sign and that we were just not meant to eat there, however I have something living deep down in my soul that needs to taste me some chicken and waffles! I still have yet to have a sit down meal at the joint, but the other day, I had a craving for a sweet, little cupcake, after walking by the discouraging line at you know where, I found myself in front of Bourbon Street and I figured«why not?» Vanilla/Vanilla of course — and after shelling out the last 4 singles I had in my wallet, and no, I did not get back any change, I was given a hot pink paper bag with my destiny awaiting inside. I got home and took out the biggest cupcake I had ever seen, pulled down the wax paper and took a bite. HOLYCOW!!! WOW! &*#(&%!!! It was a taste explosion in my mouth. The vanilla icing had a cream cheesy tang to it and the soft, fluffy white cake was just as it should be! I could feel the fat forming around my ass with each bite, but at the time I could care less. I am going to make a bold statement here, but I am quite confident to say, best cupcake ever!

Melodie M.: «Are the cupcakes fresh?» Mean Lady: «No… They’re stale.» I guess I deserved that. All that aside, the vanilla cupcakes with chocolate icing were soooo good. At $ 4 a pop, they better be.

Mmm… butter… I had a total Fatty McFat fest here Saturday brunch. I ordered the Grandma’s Breakfast(because I am your granny, bitches), which included two eggs, cheddar grits, and a choice of biscuit or Texas toast(I got a biscuit). Holy smokes was it good. Could be the full 1 lb. of butter to be found in the eggs and biscuit, or the 1 lb. of cheddar in the grits, or the gallon of cream that made those eggs so light and fluffy, or all that dairy together — I really don’t know, because I started having palpitations and felt quite light-headed after I chowed it all. Coffee was only so-so, but the proprietor was super nice, even giving us an intro to the three types of hot sauce available on the table. Prices were a little more than they should have been($ 7.95 for the breakfast and $ 1.50 for non-gourmet coffee), but I did enjoy my meal and will be coming back to try lunch or dinner. I have a feeling their mac ‘n’ cheese’ll kill me. Literally.

Well, this is an odd conundrum… and I don’t mean the Caymus wine. Peter went on a quest for a red velvet cupcake this morning to wake me up with, and came home with a mysterious offering that was as large and plump as any I have ever had, but which turned out to be not such a mystery after all. Upon being rebuffed by Billy’s on his first stop, where he was told that«they make them when they feel like it», he roamed the Chelsea and WV streets aimlessly, not wanting to come home without something. Then, he looked up – good advice, in Manhattan, and discovered a place still trying to figure itself out. It’s part café, part market, part take-out joint and part bakery. It’s only been open a few months, but Peter was assured by the saleswoman that the red velvet was a staple item, and they had them fresh for him right then. When he woke me up with this enormous cupcake and coffee, and I began its evaluation, we began discussing how a cupcake of this sheer magntitude could have remained under the NY foodie/cupcakehead radar. Ameena would SURELY have sussed this one out if she had known about it. I got online and we found out that actually… it isn’t an unknown cupcake upstart at all, but the queen of all cupcakes, the Make My Cake cupcake annointed as top treat by the NY Times, imported downtown to this newly created outpost by the Make My Cake people. Information about this location is hard to come by, but it’s there, and the cupcakes are too. And Ameena had tried it already, up in Harlem at the mother ship. Now, as far as the cupcake is concerned, I was actually taken aback. It is enormous, and the cream cheese frosting is simply perfect. It has a slight sugary crack when your teeth sink in, and nothing but sugar and cream cheese meet your tongue. However, although the texture of the cake is really moist, tender and wonderful, it is unbelieveably oily, and rather flavorless. It seemed to be a vegetable oil grease rather than butter or a heavier oil like peanut, and didn’t make me belch or otherwise gross me out, but there is so much oil and my fingers got so slick with it, that I can’t give this cupcake more stars. The rating is also affected by a lack of cocoa flavor. While red velvet isn’t a chocolate cake, you should be able to detect cocoa in the background, and it’s completely absent here. Overall, I had one thing from a place I haven’t been to, where they didn’t even make it in the first place, so please go and evaluate everything yourselves and don’t take my 3-star rating too seriously until I make a second or third visit. However, the cupcake has real strengths but significant weaknesses, and that, my friends, you can take to the bank.
