Gracious Home

Really bad experience! It took me two weeks, many phone calls and hours on hold before they sold me a couple of door knobs! One person quit in the middle of processing it, the other one was either on break or late, even the store manager was not polite. Never again!!!

I live in the neighborhood and have been shopping at this wonderful store for 15 years. BUT something has gone amiss lately. For one, there often is no toilet paper nor paper towels nor tissues in the basement area. (Since Food Emporium closed many neigbors buy basics at Gracious Homes). Secondly, the down escalator betwen the second and third basement has been dormant for quite a while. Why?
And there is a new collection of summer dishes with butterflies on the main floor. Tis one of the ugliest patterns ever to appear at Gracious Homes. It needs a sign telling customers to go to Pottery Barn across the street.
New management or what?

Agree with other reviewers– Gracious Home is overpriced. They do carry a lot of high end product lines however, so some high prices are justified. It’s not really appropriate to compare to Bed Bath and Beyond for that reason — and because of the difference in customer service. Gracious Home should have far superior customer service because it is more high end. The general attitude of GH’s staff however is more akin to a dollar store. The staff is rude and far more concerned about their personal conversations than engaging with customers who need help. Last time I was in the store, I was looking at high end linens on the second floor. Two staff members were very loudly joking with each other at the other end of the floor. They could clearly be heard where I was — so much so that they were interrupting my shopping experience. And everyone else’s. A lot of heads were turning. Another customer actually asked them to stop screaming, which we were all grateful for. It was very disruptive and not at all the kind of environment that makes for a pleasant shopping experience and certainly not how employees should behave at a so-​called high end, overpriced store.

Always LOVE stopping in Gracious Home while in New York City. It’s on the corner of Broadway and 67^th St. It’s definitely a high-​end store. The first floor mostly consists of lovely scented diffusers and candles. Yummy Chocolate Eggs and Bunnies were being sold too :).
Surprisingly, I saw an alligator candle measuring approximately 2 ½ feet long. Must say, the alligator candle would be a great conversational piece in your home.
I decided to take the escalator down to the lower level. The lower level has wonderful high-​end hostess items such as Michael Aram, fine bed linens and lovely bath and laundry products such Lafco, Bliss, Molton Brown and The Laundress.
I believe they have a third level. However, I have not gone up there.
A gracious sales person did approach me and others to see if anyone needed any assistance. I know firsthand that their customer service is excellent. I had ordered an iron through Gracious Home online. I did return the iron through UPS. Within two days, their customer service department immediately credited my account, with no questions asked.
During the holidays, I stopped in. There were several beautifully decorated Christmas trees along with some wonderful holiday ornaments on display.

Gracious Home is a great place to shop (if you’re not on a budget). However, you can always pick up a small unique gift without breaking the bank. The Gracious Home shop reminds me of a very chic boutique of items for an elegant home.

Horrible customer service– the minute you step in and look around for more than 3 seconds the sales associates harass you asking if you need any help. I went in there today and this woman began asking me more and more in depth questions about what I was searching for. When I told her I did not know what I was looking for in detail, she continued to harass me. The more I told her I was not sure and wanted to LOOK around, the more she continued to follow me. I went upstairs and looked at more products and the other sales associate did the same thing. Do yourselves a favor and avoid this store at all costs.

Knife sharpening — who knew? My local hardware store said it would take 2 – 3 weeks to do the job because their knife sharpener doesn’t come into the store more often than that. There’s a sign outside that advertised this service but I guess they don’t mean it…
At Gracious Home I dropped off knives on a Saturday afternoon and they were ready by Monday. They charge $ 1.20/per blade inch. For the Wusthof set the charge was $ 24 before taxes.
Excellent service.

I recently purchased three candles online through Gracious Home. I am absolutely obsessed with a candle by Archipelago called Lavender spice. I bought three and they are pretty pricey but are so worth it. I went to light my remaining one yesterday and noticed the entire glass was broke, I lit it but wax was coming out, clearly had been broken during shipping. I promptly emailed and literally within 5 mins someone by the name of Angela Reyes had not only responded to my email (on Labor Day) but had scheduled for a replacement. I am so impressed by the customer service that I will be shopping here from now on. Thanks for making my day Angela!!!

If you appreciate higher quality home accessories, there is no better shop in Manhattan than Gracious Home. Other reviewers complain of prices more expensive than stores like Bed Bath Beyond. However that’s like comparing Bergdorf Goodman to Macy’s. Of course prices are higher for higher quality products. The staff is knowlegable and helpful. And the selection of unique beautiful things is bar none.

I recently wanted to find a window fan for my apartment, so I decided to go to GH instead of BBB. Unfortunately they had NO window fans, which I found very unusual since they always had at least two choices of everything to choose from (not enormous, but enough). I was also on the lookout for an air purifier, but unless you needed a professional grade one to accommodate your entire classic 7 apartment (yeah, right), then your out of luck.
The sales staff is very helpful, but that’s only when you can chase one down. I don’t know if they’ve had to cut back, but there seemed to be a lack of supporting staff for the store, and many of the departments had none at all, except for an already working cashier.
The quality of the merchandise is top notched, but for the lack of sales staff, and the higher prices, I expect more service. I’m not cutting them out, but I’m not going to be rushing here anytime soon.

It’s odd that the average product here is more expensive than competitors in Manhattan but the service is worse than those places — shouldn’t the payoff for paying more be better customer service?
It was a huge hassle to try to buy and install an air conditioner from them — they were disorganized and unresponsive. I got attitude from a sales rep over the phone after I tried following up multiple times, and I decided to take my business elsewhere

A lot of beautiful home accessories. However, the pretentious staff aren’t really helpful at all and their furniture selection is almost non existent. The merchandise is a bit overpriced.

I was referred to Gracious Home for scented candles many years ago. Gracious Home is graceful yet homey at the same time. I applied for a job here because I’d like a graceful home of my own, I’m only an interview away from a Gracious Home. David at Gracious Home was helpful with getting me a job application, referring me to the right people to get my application going. BTW– the scented candles here are oh so gracious I could enshrine the entire gracious home with these gracious candles that pervade wafts of everlasting grace through the air.

This is a review of both the brick and mortar store and the internet store. Let me tell what is good about this place and then I will tell you what is awful about it.
Gracious Home is well curated. They do not have a particularly varied selection on certain products, consequence I suppose of their limited square footage in such an expensive real estate market. But what they do carry tends to be of quality. Part of the pleasure of shopping here is that the staff has made certain decisions for you, and eliminated some of the static of too many choices. For example, they’ll carry one or two nonstick frying pans but the ones they do carry are top notch. Shopping can be an overwhelming experience at other stores. Shopping at Gracious Home is less so because the selection is honed.
That said, you can (if you have enough money) stock an entire household here. They may only carry one or two versions of most things, but they have at least one version of everything you need.
Alas the drawbacks are significant.
The biggest problem with Gracious Home is the price. The mark ups are laughable or terrifying, depending on how you want to experience being ripped off. Just one example: a 12 inch cast iron skillet (Lodge brand, pre-​seasoned) at Gracious Home is double the price that you’d pay at either a local hardware store, a country store, or online (hello Amazon). Not was not a typo. They charge you literally 100% more. The demographic they seem to be targeting is a wealthy resident of the UWS who doesn’t mind paying too much so long as they can walk to the store and avoid the time spent comparison shopping.
Staff at the store can be hard to locate, especially on the weekends. This is a problem because some products aren’t on the shelves. They’ll have a display version of the microwave you want for example and the boxed version has to be brought up from the back room. When you do locate a staff member, they will likely be rude, exasperated or curtly inform you that this isn’t their department as they sail past you.
Sometimes I stop into Gracious Home to look around, get a sense of what my options might be for a particular purchase I need to make, but I rarely seal the deal because I inevitably find the same product for significantly cheaper elsewhere.
Sounds like a two or three star review right? Well that was until I made the bad decision of buying something off their website. They were having a sale on an item I needed and promised free shipping. I decided to buy from them (support local businesses!) instead of using Target or Amazon. Well they sent me an email back that same day, saying the item was discontinued. I asked for a refund and was given one. Then two weeks later they charged me again! I sent emails, I made phone calls and they insisted they had only charged me once. Despite their phony assurances, I could see the item was still on my credit card statement (I was checking online). After waiting for 20 days from the date of the second, unauthorized purchase, and after having wasted so much time trying to resolve this issue with various staff members at Gracious Home, I finally had to call my credit card company and dispute the charge. That resolved the issue. What did I get from Gracious Home? One of those fake apologies along the lines of «we’re sorry you are unhappy.»
My advice, it’s ok to stop in and look but be very wary of spending any money or expecting any staff members to take responsibility for anything.

This place is my favorite home store. Be forewarned; this store is pricey, BUT, if you are on the mailing list you get all the sale dates. The sales are great! You get luxurious items at Macy prices– isn’t that what we all want?
Stop in and get decorating ideas of you aren’t willing to buy the big ticket items.
Customer service is great and they will deliver the items to your home (sometimes for a fee).

Amazing store always has the best brands and the BEST help. Just bought HangZ picture hooks and I must say they are the best I have ever used.

If you’re not into the frenetic crowds and lines at Bed Bath and Beyond, come north a few blocks north the Gracious Home.
Some things are more expensive, but I’ve found that smallish things are competitively priced. (Last weekend I bough cheesecloth for $ 4 and some mason canning jars with lids for $ 1.30-$ 1.80). The three levels can make it a little hard to navigate, but the staff is friendly and pretty knowledgeable about products and locations.

I love this place– they have everything and I’ve never been let down by the super courteous staff in the hardware department. I got my knives sharpened there and they were so much nicer to me than the guy in his truck outside Zabar’s! Highly recommended.

This place just keeps getting better and better! The new staff is amazing. One of the managers (Elon) went out of his way to resolve two separate issues for me recently. I couldn’t get over how nice and helpful he was.
They do have some ridiculously expensive things in the store (stay away from the linens!), but their prices are the same as Bed, Bath and Beyond on most housewares.

Pretty things, and they have 3 levels of various items. It starts off on the ground level, then has escalators or elevators to 2 basement levels. The staff are pretty friendly and helpful.
However, this place can be WAY overpriced. Wine glasses set of 2 for $ 29.50! And stupid-​expensive towels.
The place says it allows dogs, but I laugh when I see this– mainly because Gracious Homes was where we discovered the family dog Hates escalators… to the point he’ll practically swim across floor as we try to walk by them (not even to get on it!). Luckily there’s an elevator you can take, should you need something from one of the lower levels.
