Nice surprise. Walked in without checking reviews and whatnot and expected a typical takeout sushi experience. Maguro exceeded expectations: the fish is good and the staff eager to please and convert return customers for what is essentially a by-the-numbers neighborhood sushi joint. The hostess brought over a small crab salad on the house – a nice touch. We proceeded to order up an udon(for the SO) and some sushi and rolls for yours truly. No complaints whatsoever – nice portions, quality sushi, and easy-to-swallow prices. A well-kept little Kips Bay secret.

Great sushi restaurant, I’m really glad I found this place. Had the lunch special of 2 rolls for $ 8.95 — I knew it was going to be great when they served the appetiser salad(dressing was so delicious I would eat cardboard if it was on it!). Shrimp tempura roll and spicy salmon roll were equally delicious and portion sizes were healthy — that was all I needed. Service was fast and very pleasant. Great, great, great.

Great service and the chefs are on top of their game. I enjoy the food and it’s important which is key for sushi. Will be back

Terrible quality fish. I’ve been ordering from here for years, not sure why… it’s never been great just okay. Bad habit because it’s convenient. I ordered for pick up this week– 2 rolls both arrived with black over ripe avocado and fishy fish. I had to throw it all out in the trash. If you ever call them back complaining they will not refund you or even apologize, they don’t care at all. So I didn’t even bother calling since I know the owner is beyond rude. It’s way better places in the neighborhood to order from. Don’t even bother unless you want to take the risk of eating bad fish and get sick. This is not a clean place, they have gone downhill. Read previous sanitary grades online, it’s disgusting.

Great casual sushi spot in Murray Hill. Very small with about 6 tables and 4 seats at the sushi bar. Sushi is quality and really fresh. Can’t beat the lunch special, $ 10 for 2 rolls & soup or salad. Takeout is really fast too. Service is great and the place is clean!

Walked in here for lunch with a friend and was quickly seated. They have a decent lunch menu with a variety of sushi combos. My friend had the sashimi lunch and I choose the 3 roll set — sweet potato tempura, mango shrimp and spicy tuna. The sushi was good, but not anything crazy. My friend did comment she could tell the salmon sashimi was more fresh than the rest. Nevertheless, still good value for a New York lunch and easy to pop in if you work close by. Overall 3.5 experience.

Solid Japanese food for the price! I order delivery from here for lunch often during the week! Their lunch specials are a steal! I usually get the chicken katsu lunch bento box for 8.95! Comes with a generous portion of chicken katsu, 6-piece California roll, rice, miso soup, and small salad! Super filling and yummy. Their rolls are pretty good too– usually hits the spot when I’m craving Japanese food at odd hours. My favorite rolls are their crispy spicy tuna roll and maguro roll. You can also never go wrong with their spider roll!

Finally got a chance to dine in since I usually order delivery. Their lunch special is awesome. I ordered 2 rolls, salmon avocado and mango shrimp that comes with either soup or salad. The salad was very fresh and yummy. The sushi was also very delicious and the salmon was fresh. For dessert my friend and I ordered vanilla fried ice cream. I LOVE their fried ice cream, seriously my favorite place for fried iced cream. So save room for it! It’s a must try. Overall I love this spot whenever I’m craving sushi or fried ice cream.

I chose this place based upon Unilocal reviews, location and menu and it did not disappoint. Sushi was very fresh and tasty. The service was fast and polite. Overall décor was pleasant. The bathroom was clean, which is always nice. It is a small place but it wasn’t overly crowded. The prices were also very reasonable.

Good local sushi place in Kips Bay area. Very small space, prefer to take out or order in for their quick reliable delivery. Recommend special rolls: Golden Dragon + Crazy Salmon, both rolls deliver good tasty satisfying portions. Good quality Sashimi as well.

We came in because we were tired and exhausted from a long day of yoga and running and shopping and wanted something fresh. The sushi is super well priced, very cheap, and the quality is pretty good. Ordered the avocado roll and the tuna cucumber roll. All seemed very fresh and came really fast. Not the best sushi in the world, but definitely a good spot for a «no frills I just want sushi and won’t stoop to the level of whole foods sushi» sushi.

I have never dined inside Maguro, but I like to order delivery and take out from here because it’s so close to my boyfriend’s apartment. The miso soup is comforting and not overly salty. The sashimi and sushi rolls always tastes fresh. To this day, a part of me still worries about getting sick every time I order raw fish, but I’ve come to trust Maguro. My favorite item to order is the Chirashi because I love the assortment of fresh fish they serve(and it comes with a miso soup). If you order the lunch special, you get 10 slices of raw fish over rice for $ 13.50. If you order the Chirashi dinner, you get 15 slices of raw fish for $ 20. I am not a fan of the sushi rice that comes with the Chirashi because it is a bit bland. However, the most important part(the fish) is delicious so I can’t complain too much.

Takeout sushi on point. I was craving rice and something«healthy» feeling, so I naturally gravitated towards sushi. Maguro was the closest place with a good rating, so I hopped on Seamless and placed my order. It was ready by the time I arrived and I happily brought back my two salmon avocado and one spicy tuna rolls. Their lunch deal of 3 rolls + soup or salad for $ 12.50 is pretty fair for the area, and I was impressed with the quality. The salmon avocado had real nice big cuts of fish which were deliciously tender and fresh-tasting. The spicy tuna want my favorite, as I thought it almost had too much of a bite for a roll itself(and it tasted very similar to sriracha). I think I’ll stick with plain fish and single ingredient rolls next time. The salad was decent, and I had no real complaints about it. The salad was thankfully filled to the top, unlike other sushi joints I’ve been to. Nailed down the local sushi spot!

The reason I wouldn’t give it 5 stars is because the location is too small — I wouldn’t want to dine in. However I got takeout and it was delicious! The spicy tuna roll had a lot of fish and it was very flavorful. The salmon avocado roll had fat pieces of fish that tasted extremely fresh. They focus on the fish rather than overloading with rice which I really appreciate — you absolutely get your money’s worth. I will definitely be getting takeout or delivery again.

This is your standard, run-of-the-mill sushi spot. (I almost said ‘garden variety’ but I feel like that’s overstating it. I like gardens, and things that come from gardens tend to be much better than their non-garden counterparts, in my experience.) The fish is fresh enough, the construction of maki and nigiri is workmanlike, they have a few affordable lunch specials(two-roll, three-roll, bento box, etc.), and they probably do a lot of delivery/takeout business. I’m not coming in to marvel at their omakase, but to get some sort of a spicy tuna/eel avocado/shrimp tempura/sushi deluxe/shumai/gyoza/tekka/salmon/shrimp something combination meal. The most American approach I can possibly take to eating sushi without getting California rolls or Philadelphia rolls(mostly because the majority of crab stick sucks, and cream cheese doesn’t belong on my sushi). And Maguro does just fine with that.

If you’re looking for a more formal sushi place, this is it. This is where you take your date to for a romantic dinner. I took my wife here for our anniversary and couldn’t have come out happier. Whether you’re ordering the sushi or something from the kitchen, you can expect a delicious meal. The sushi I had was fresh and the teriyaki salmon my wife ordered was cooked to perfection.

Maguro has a great lunch special, with 3 rolls and a soup/salad for $ 12.95(among other deals). I came with a friend on a time crunch, and they have very fast service. I really enjoyed the salmon avocado and salmon mango rolls. They were very fresh-tasting. The spicy tuna was oddly creamy; its flavor was good, but I wouldn’t order it again. I will definitely be visiting again to take advantage of their fabulous lunch deal.

3.5!!! This place was a really nice surprise! Met a friend for a last minute dinner, and has craving for sushi. We had some apps, a few rolls each and a couple glasses of FIVEDOLLAR wine. Everything was good, everything was fresh… They lost points in a slightly rude server and for terrible temperature control. It was super hot in there, and I don’t think it was my cheap wine. Highly recommended, very reasonably priced

Small restaurant so I can see this place being very crowded. Came here on a Tuesday afternoon, only reason for coming here was because my usual sushi place wasn’t opened yet. There was a lunch special available so opted for the beef udon which came with a soup or salad(chose a salad) and the 2 roll combo. For the 2 roll combo I ordered the spicy tuna and shrimp cucumber rolls. Not sure if it’s because they just opened and they were rushing but my rolls were falling apart. The tuna also tasted a bit«off» and there was a savory/umami taste to it(maybe a hint of msg?) The shrimp cucumber roll is small boiled shrimps bundled together with strips of cucumber. Salad was was okay, it comes dressed with that japanese orange colored ginger dressing you get at other places. I noted that the bowl was extremely cold, so I assume they do this prep ahead of time and keep it in the fridge til it’s time to serve. Beef udon… was okay. I wasn’t quite impressed, with udon I usually prefer a more savory broth. The broth served here was more vegetable based and tasted heavily of red peppers. Beef was basically boiled pieces of flank steak? Service was nice nonetheless, the waitress was fast to seat customers and attend to them. I just didn’t like the whole workers carrying things(supplies/garbage) back and forth through the front door, things like that usually wouldn’t bother me but I was seated right by the door. Would I come again? Maybe. But I wasn’t satisfied with the food here overall, I might give this place a go in the future. The restaurant overall is not bad, it just didn’t meet my preferences/expectation, I’m just not a fan.

Maguro is a standard Japanese restaurant in Kips Bay. It’s a pretty popular option for people ordering delivery(via Seamless or GrubHub) because the delivery is prompt and the price is just right. I would recommend getting its great lunch deal, although the kitchen entrees are not as good. I have had the Any Three Maki Rolls lunch special($ 11.95 — so cheap!) and the Don Buri Lunch Special. All lunch items come with a choice of miso soup or salad with carrot ginger dressing on the side. For the Maki Rolls lunch special, I chose the Salmon & Cucumber Maki, Eel & Cucumber Maki, and Spicy Tuna Maki rolls. They all tasted great, except the rice wasn’t seasoned too well. They put just a little bit of rice, so I liked that I could taste the flavor of the fish really well. I wished they had put big slice of cucumbers for the extra crunch rather than small pieces of julienne cucumber that fell too easily out of the sushi roll. The salmon and the eel pieces in both maki rolls were big and fresh. I actually didn’t like the eel though because it was really fatty. The spicy tuna was delicious. I have gotten the Don Buri lunch special with Oyako Don as well. The dish was served in a rectangular container filled with sliced chicken, mushrooms, onions, and runny eggs with pickles on the side. I thought this dish was extremely BLAND and it was not the traditional oyako don with buttery rice I had expected. Definitely get sushi when you are at Maguro. I also tried the Miso Eggplant — they said that this appetizer is usually deep fried, but I asked to be broiled and they delivered! The eggplant was cooked nicely, but the miso glaze was too sweet. It was almost like a dessert!
