I love egg custard tarts. Newark’s Ironbound is a great place to pick up the Portuguese-style ones. Now there’s a spot Downtown where I can get my fix — Cinnamon Sugar Bakery. Cinnamon Sugar Bakery opened up recently on Market Street, next to the old Paramount Theater. I had a chance to stop by and pick up a few goodies. It’s set up like a bakery café with a few tables indoors and two umbrella tables outside. There are two glass display cases filled with pastries and one with cakes. Also, prominently displayed are empanadas — beef and chicken. While there were a lot of sweet goodies to try, there are even more things listed on the bakery’s menu — from breakfast sandwiches on Portuguese bread to sandwiches, salads, and wraps to American and Italian pastries. What I can’t wait to try are the bolo de bacalhau(cod and potato fritter) and the cheese empanada(because the chicken one I tried was pretty tasty). I’m a fan of their egg custard tarts. They are very good. Also — and I couldn’t help it because it just looked too good in the glass display case — I picked up this«egg roll with almonds and cream» that I’ve never seen before. I guess that’s part of the joy of going to a bakery — the spontaneity of seeing something that catches your eye on display and trying it out. And I was not disappointed here. It’s like a cookie roll with sweet cream filling inside and almond slivers glazed on top. For $ 3, it’s a nice item to order and share with a friend. This is a great addition to the area. While the Ironbound isn’t terribly far for people downtown, the convenience of this bakery being so close is a huge value. Plus, if you work in the area, the bakery has a catering menu with both American sandwich/salad options and Portuguese selections such as picadinho, bacalhau, and carne de porco alentejana(and they deliver, too!).
