Went for lunch. Special was a good deal and Sushi was good. I would not go for dinner as the place is kinda dark.

I’m always skeptical about trying a new sushi restaurant but when I read the reviews for Fuji Sushi I was prepared for something above-average and was sorely disappointed. I came at a dinner hour well before closing and my partner and I were the only ones in the restaurant. We felt unwelcome and rushed the whole time despite being the only ones there. Since it was my first visit, I was looking carefully at the menu to decide what I’d want. I know what most sushi ingredient combos taste like and didn’t want to choose something I knew would turn me off. But every two minutes or so, the server would ask me if I was ready, sounding pretty grouchy & harboring a pressuring tone. When it came time to order I was convinced, by her, out of a few things that I was interested in, being told things like, «Oh, that doesn’t really get ordered much» or «that’s not a very popular choice, are you sure you want that?», which made me really uncomfortable. I decided on a few rolls & nigiri pieces. I don’t remember the names of the rolls, but I know all of them were doused with sauces that weren’t mentioned on the menu & special boards(I hate sweet, fatty sauces, especially the shrimp sauce that was on one), the fish was warm-ish and the rice was hard and old, obviously from the lunch hour’s pot. The rolls were enormous, which is good for some people, but they wouldn’t fit into my mouth and crumbled apart very easily, as if the nori was soggy. I could only eat about five pieces out of our plate, and my partner tried to finish the rest because he dislikes waste, but found himself hard-pressed to do so because of the quality and flavor. The fish atop the nigiri itself had a good taste, but like I said, the rice was poor and the fish not too chilly. The ikura was wilted and not fresh and plump. We weren’t ever checked up on with the exception of the server asking which plates she could take from us and if we wanted our check. Her tone and the way the other employees bumped by our table made us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. I’m unsure of what people see in Fuji Sushi — perhaps these shining reviews come from people who don’t have much experience with quality sushi and just love anything doused in precious sauce, but I was very unhappy to sink around fifty dollars into a meal I could not enjoy.

Seriously bad tonight. Plastic wrapper in my food. no apology from anyone(they did take off my meal that I literally took one bite of and 1 of our drinks). Waitress seemed like I was more of a problem to her than anything… gave attitude when asking for chopsticks and rudely asked me if I wanted anything else(I was so turned off at that point though). Have had great service and food from here before tonight. So disappointed.

Unaccommodating and the location is super small. Sat down and left all in 5 min. I will never return and I will encourage my friends not to go either.

Some of the better sushi that I’ve had. Rolls were fresh and flavorful. Lots of choices and variety. I got a Dynamite Roll and a tuna roll. The Dynamite Roll was very good and the tuna roll was average. Restaurant was clean and stylish. You can see the chef making the sushi behind the bar.

Typical delicious sushi. Staff is friendly and never too busy. Their salads are my fave.

Absolutely a great sushi restaurant to go to! Don’t let the size fool you, although the restaurant is pretty small, their food is great! I had ordered the lobster roll, and it was delicious and beautifully presented. Usually one roll is not enough to fill me up, but there was a good amount of meat that I was almost not able to finish.

Ok so maybe I was a little harsh with my previous review, Despite the fact that it’s a little cramped and that we scare the servers with the amount of sushi we order, I always come back to Fuji! They have the best sushi in town, without a doubt. 3 stars is too harsh! Kudos to Fuji

We come here a LOT. Recently, if we don’t have a particular waitress the service is below par. Tonight, we had an empty beverage over 10 minutes, with only ONE other table and THREE wait staff… but, we had a poor wait person. She dropped food and ran off, ignoring things most times. Love the food — hate the varying service.

Absolutely LOVE this place! Sushi is great! Yes it’s a «hole in the wall» but small and simple to keep their food top notch! I actually just saw a lady who was not satisfied with her food so the waitress took it back. The cook(I’m assuming he’s the Co owner because I’ve seen him here multiple times) came out and told her that he was going to replace her meal and not charge her a dime! I get take out at least every other week, no lie. I will say that you do get more when you dine in, but I get the sumo roll to go and it’s HUGE! Love love love!

Since there is only one sushi restaurant west of Gainesville, thank goodness it’s a good one. The service and the sushi here are both stellar. I can recommend the KC, Dynamite, Mt Fuji, Jade, and Rainbow rolls. Their non-sushi selections are limited, but their new chicken curry entrée is tasty and generously portioned. It may not have the ambiance of Dragonfly, but the food is as good and the service is friendlier. Expect to spend $ 25 and up per person without tip or drinks.

I was a little surprised about the rave reviews after I ate here. Their spicy tuna roll is not made of whole pieces of tuna, it’s processed so it has a different taste and texture… and frankly makes me wonder what I’m actually eating. To me the best place in Gville is Dragonfly but this is much closer for me. I think next time I will drive to Bento if I want sushi on the fly.

I’ve grown up around sushi practically my whole life so I’ve been exposed to many different styles of sushi and the way it’s prepared. I love the sushi here because the quality freshness of the fish that’s being used. In my own taste, I prefer to eat Salmon Nigiri. You can just taste the sweetness of the fish and also when you look at it you can see the ribbons of white stripes along the slices. I also had some Seafood Yaki Udon. I’m usually not a big udon fan but I fell in love with it. The sauce used in this dish was perfect and compliments the main ingredients. I would recommend anyone and everyone to go and try this place! It’s the best Japanese restaurant in the area.

I had not been to Fuji for some time and recently have returned three times in a row. They’ve stepped up their game and now have become my second-favorite sushi bar in the Gainesville area – second after Mahzu. You can see my previous review for general comments on the interior and atmosphere – and they still have the lite rock/pop, which alas is very heavy on Céline Dion and the very sappiest songs of Mariah’s back-catalog, so don’t expect any cutting-edge music nor even Dragonfly’s house-infused beats here. On closer inspection, I must say the interior has its charm though and they did make the very best use of a rather small space. I really can’t complain on the interior at all, however please please please do something with the music! Some K-pop, J-pop, light lounge or house or something. .. Groove Armada. .. Anita Baker even, just something else for the love of God, please! They don’t even play that much Céline Dion in Montréal, I swear. The sushi however is top-notch. It’s clear the sushi chefs – both the owner and the younger dude – know their craft and are on top of their game. I’ve had more innovative sushi perhaps but their sushi is fresh and the rolls are ample in size and flavor alike. The fresh salmon nigiri was especially good and all the nigiri are pretty outstanding. You really can tell more about a sushi bar via its nigiri than anything else I think: the fancy rolls are not that hard to make and provide many different ways for the chef to mask less than fresh fish or otherwise bury the whole affair in a muddle of flavors. But nigiri won’t lie. And the nigiri here says fresh all the way. I see that some people have said the chefs are slow but I’ve not found that to be the case. I’ve sat at the sushi bar every time I’ve been here and they hustle right along at getting the rolls done but sometimes have a lot of take-away orders as well as whatever is going on in the restaurant itself. So I wouldn’t say they poke along at all. If anything, they seem very concerned at getting the orders out quickly – yet perfectly done – for all their customers.

Great place. I order the sashimi platters and large amounts of sushi and I have always been impressed at the freshness and size of the pieces. Value for price is best in town easy.
