We were unhappy with the food. The full rack of ribs came out generally lukewarm, and some ribs were actually cold. It was clear that they had been in the refrigerator and were microwaved or quickly slung under a broiler for warming. The«Hot Mess» signature dish Mrs. Soy L. ordered was actually an ice cold mess and a disappointment because of it. The onion rings tasted of oil too. This all may have been because we arrived just as the place was opening but there is no excuse for cold/lukewarm BBQ, or any food for that matter. We will not be returning as a result.

Here’s a little hidden gem located upstairs from the ice skating rink in Newburgh. Really good, quality BBQ with all the Southern styled sides you could want. Ribs are tender and tasty, pulled pork melts in your mouth, and the brisket flavorful and tender. Of the sides, we generally go for the beans or mac n cheese, both of which are great. Though we’ve only gotten food to go, their space is quite open and nice, with a full bar and plenty of tables. One puzzling thing, and I’ve spoken about this to one of the owners, is from the outside, and especially from the road driving by, there’s only a small sign by the entrance, and nowhere on there does it say exactly what type of food this place has. ‘Handsome Devil’ doesn’t exactly scream ‘BBQ’, and it’s amazing just how many people in this area have never heard of this place, nor do they know that it’s even a BBQ place. Before a neighbor mentioned it to me about a year ago, I drove by almost every day, never once realizing it was a BBQ restaurant. My suggestion, get a new, larger sign, and make sure it’s mentioned that this is indeed a ‘BBQ’ restaurant, and people will come in droves. Friendly, affordable, and tasty BBQ, so if you haven’t discovered this little place yet. head on over and do so.

I would not fully trust the opinion of anyone who rates this establishment less than 5 stars… It would just raise serious eyebrows. Good luck finding better BBQ and/or a more quality lineup of craft beers in the Hudson Valley or metro NYC. They have New York’s best ribs among many great selections. I usually get the Rob Teaser for that reason. After that, in particular The Hot Mess served over seasoned French fries is literally the best meal for your money that I have ever encountered. When it’s winter in New York and I am home I go here one to three times per week.

Nice, clean space. Some folks don’t like the location, but I think it’s just fine. There’s a view of both skating rinks from the big windows, so if you want to run upstairs for a drink or some food while the kids are skating, the place works. Nice bar setup. 9 craft beers on tap(not your basic coors/Miller/bud piss water) and decent selection of bottles. The dining area is well lit and spacious as well, and the staff was courteous. Unfortunately, the thing you really go there for, the food, was a little disappointing. My wife ordered the brisket sandwich, and while the portion was a pretty good size, probably 2⁄3 of the meat was inedible fat and gristle. The pulled pork tacos I ordered were about the same, with almost half of the meat consisting of fat and gristle. The edible meat parts were good, but unfortunately there wasn’t much of it. The sides were good, especially the house made chips. I had heard nothing but good things about this place before coming here, but unfortunately the food came up short. I’m willing to try this place again and chalk it up to a bad night.

Very good, flavorful pork. Soda is only 1.50 with a refill. Prices reasonable. Portions sufficient. My only complaint was the pork taco was served on soft tortilla. It was soggy and not a taco to me. The filling was VERYGOOD so that made up for the soggy tortilla. Will definitely go again. Staff very friendly and accomodating.

Food is awesome! Authentic bbq is here! Great beer selection. So perfect for a mini adult night while kids skate :-). Very few places that this can happen. I think I might give this place 5 stars if they stay open later!!!

4STARSISFORTHEFOOD… …the location is in a ice skating rink !? That being said the BBQ is great. We had ribs which were tender, moist, fall off the bone piping hot and done to perfection. The meat had a really nice smoked flavor and the sauce that is on the table was mild. Not tangy or overly sweet. We also had brisket that was also tender moist and had a really nice smokey flavor. Both were large portions. Both meats were truly great BBQ. Side of cole slaw was very fresh and light, not drowning in a sweet mayo sauce as many places do. The slaw dressing was more of a vinegar base and had a little tang to it– very good. Onion rings side was to die for. One of the best onion rings dishes I have ever had. Nice batter, big sweet onion rings in the batter and a hint of beer(?) in the batter. Very excellent. Great BBQ, large portions, super service at very reasonable prices.

A reliable option! The barbecue sandwich servings are MASSIVE, the cornbread is delicious, and the service is kind and attentive. They’re happy to make substitutions and they don’t cheat you price-wise because they’re co-located with the rink. Definitely worth trying if you’re stuck for a long time and want to watch one of the games downstairs– away from the cold!
