1st, time I had lunch here it was a struggle, they served your food on styrofoam plates with plastic forks. Update: to go with the really good food they have real forks and plates. So if your ever in Newport News, give them a try if you enjoy good southern food!

Tonight was a last minute date night and he was craving some soul food. As soon as we walked in we were greeted so nicely! We asked about the menu and were given the best run down of the menu ever. We told her our stipulations; I don’t eat pork and he doesn’t like shrimp. All the recommendations were right up our alley and and she told us what we would and wouldn’t like. I finally ordered the crab cakes with Mac and cheese and greens(with turkey) and he ordered the fried catfish with yams and cabbage(with bacon). We then sat at the little bar in the dining room and Ms. Shugga her self came out and talked with us for a while and made him a drink(The Incredible Hulk) while we waited for out food. When our food came out we were more than excited at what they placed before us! His catfish was huge and so perfectly cooked. My crab cakes were perfect too. Then they brought out our sides. And each meal came with a beautiful piece of cornbread with honey butter. We couldn’t wait to eat! And once we did we realized we were in heaven. All the food was perfect. We were so full but kept eating. The staff was perfect. So friendly and down to earth. We can’t wait to go back! Thank you so much for the wonderful experience!

Oh man I waltzed in here 1⁄26 and boy was I in for a surprise. I ordered the catfish(fried). I had a side of yams and cabbage and my friend had a order of crab cakes, Mac and cheese, and the collard greens. Everything was great. The catfish was breaded to perfection and meted in your mouth. If you disagree, email me and I’ll pay you back. The Mac and cheese was that cheesy kind that mom used to make that you didn’t fully appreciate till you were older. The greens were straight outta grandma’s kitchen and the cornbread… DAMN! Even shuggamomma herself was onboard to serve us drinks. The atmosphere was so down home. The food was perfect. I don’t know what I found bad about this place. The bathrooms were nice mad clean with surround sound in them. Not even kidding, from the time I walked in they greeted me and kept me entertained throughout the meal. I felt like I was eating with family. Show them some love. You won’t regret it.

Wonderful ! Loaded w/flavor ! We ordered fried catfish, collard greens, potato salad, fried pork chops w/gravy, mac n cheese, cabbage, cornbread & banana pudding. Portions are good size, 2 fish fillets, 2 pork chops. A mound of cabbage & collards. The cornbread must be 3″ thick, fluffy, tasty & had to be cooked in cast iron. I was able to sample the gumbo. It too was full of flavor .The heat/spice comes from the sausage. These women know how to cook down home style !

Really good food! Had a cup of gumbo, which was delicious, but only came in a cup and not a bowl? The shrimp and grits was also pretty good, but I am biased and think the best shrimp and grits anywhere exists in Georgetown, SC at Thomas Café. Someone else had chicken wings and apparently they were pretty good as well. Will definitely come back!

I am so glad I tried ShuggaMomma’s before my New Year’s Resolution to lose weight begins. Guess I’ll have to wait the week and a half it usually takes for my Resolution to fail miserably before I can return for some of Shugga’s delicious soul food. I’ve never eaten at a restaurant that made me feel like my own grandma was cooking and serving the meal. Shugga must have gotten her name from how sweet she is. I couldn’t decide between the meatloaf and pulled pork, so she made me a «sampler» meal of both. The meatloaf tasted like it came right from the oven at gramma’s house. I went with the sweet and spicy sauce for my pulled pork, why was served on a buttery toasted bun. The pulled pork packed a lot of heat, not much sweet, but that’s just how I like it. I loved that Shugga toasted the bun. This might seem like a minor thing, but how many BBQ spots just throw your pork on a cold hamburger bun? My daughter had the shrimp and grits. Her mom had the crab cake dinner. I stole a bite of the cake while she stole a bite of the grits. The dinner meals comes with 2 sides, Mao we tried to get one of everything. The macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, baked beans, and candied yams were so good I could’ve licked the bowls clean. The potato salad wasn’t my cup of tea, but it was gobbled up by my lunch companions. Then there was the cornbread. Shugga uses her grandmother’s recipe that dates back nearly 100 years. Served on a plate like its a piece of cake, this cornbread was perfect. Not dry or overly sweet. The dinner prices are on the high-side, but you get what you pay for. I paid $ 13 for a slice of meatloaf, a pulled pork sandwich, 2 sides, and a piece of cornbread. The crab cake meal is $ 16. The lunch baskets, which are available all day, are less expensive($ 7 — $ 10 from what I can remember) and only come with 1 side. ShuggaMomma’s is a delicious, locally-run restaurant. Shugga is great and I can’t wait to return.

Best Soul Food we’ve eaten since moving to VA. We’re from Mississippi so we’re used to good food like greens, cabbage, liver, and chitterlings. This place made us feel like we were all back in Mississippi sitting in my grandmother’s kitchen! This place has become one of our go-to places for good food and great service! The people in my party had a Philly Steak which was full of meat, Delicious fries seasoned to perfection. Fried Catfish that was to die for, Meatloaf and mashed potatoes with a special gravy sauce, mac and cheese that was so cheesy it couldn’t have been from the box. We also had chitterlings which needed NOKETCHUPORHOTSAUCE because it was so flavorful. Our friends had liver, rice and gravy and pigs feet to go. He loved the large portions of food and the liver tasted amazing. And last but not least, THECORNBREADISINCREDIBLE! My picky eater of a son ate some of everything we offered him and that says a lot!

After the first visit a solid four(4) stars … wish I could make it a 4 ½ star. I may push it up to 5 stars next time I visit. I ate the gumbo and friend chicken wings, both were to die for. The corn bread was out of this world. Other guests liked the shrimp and grits and the salad. The crab cakes tasted good, but were not as lumpy as hoped, which is why we wanted to rate it four and a half. If my next visit is as good I’ll gladly up my rating to five stars! This place is that good!

Great food! My beautiful girlfriend loves Soul Food, so I asked around and heard mention of Shugga Mommas. After looking at the reviews on Unilocal,I knew we had to try it. Boy did we hit a home run! There is plenty of parking and the staff is very welcoming. Shugga herself greeted us and chatted with us for quite a bit. For starters, we were given corn bread. It was a 5⁄5. Easily the best I’ve ever had in my life. It was almost like cake! I ordered the fried chicken, but the cook said the pieces were too small to serve. I changed my order to wings with the Mumbo Sauce. The wings were phenomenal. Cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly. I had Mac and cheese as a side and that was delicious as well. My mom and brother ordered the crab cakes and fries. I sampled both and loved them! My son ordered wings and fries and yes, I tried his too, it his were good. Lol. My girlfriend ordered the shrimp and grits with a side of collard greens. I’m not a fan of grits, so I won’t comment on it. For dessert, we got some banana pudding that Shugga made herself.(On the menu it says to ask if she made it. Lol). It was perfectly made. I could not have been more satisfied with it. After our meal, Shugga came over and asked about every dish and asked if we had any feedback or constructive criticism. She was so sweet, funny and made us feel right at home. She told us about her family history and some of the first meals she cooked. My mom wanted to try her remoulade sauce, so Shugga made her another crab cake –for free — to try her delicious homemade sauce. What a grand gesture! We had a great time and will definitely be back. I can’t say enough complimentary things about dining here!

They are so polite and friendly when you walk in. Not rude like a lot of people I’ve met so far. I ordered their chicken wings dinner with Mac and cheese and rice and gravy. I also ordered the lunch gumbo with collard greens mixed with turkey. Both were delicious! You can tell they put a lot of love in their food. OMG especially their corn bread! Their corn bread is by the far the best corn bread I ever had! I don’t even like corn bread, but thanks to them, I do now. As long as it tastes like theirs

Amazing food with a local no frills atmosphere. Food is cooked fresh to order so there is a slight wait… but the wait is well worth it. Came in on a Friday night and ordered the fried catfish with a side of catfish and greens with the cornbread. The cornbread is like a slice of cake… not overly sweet and so tasty. The catfish was so well seasoned you were not wanting for any condiments, I grabbed the hotsauce and never opened the bottle. The greens were nice and flavorful with good chunks of turkey and the cabbage was well seasoned as well. What a great find in Newport News. The staff was wonderful and friendly:) Can’t wait to go back and try more…

So glad my wife and I stopped in! People are super nice and food was delicious. Wife had fried catfish dinner, which was two big fillets fried golden, and to me this was best fried catfish I have tried and my wife loved it as well. Wing dinner is 4 big wings fried crispy, delicious filling meal with big portions. Two sides with those meals we had collard greens and yams, yummy, and slice of skillet cornbread! I will be back often amd i advise anyone else to stop in, this food is for real! Support local business! Shugga Momma’s deserves our support!

The staff at Shugga Mommas treated me and my daughter like family the minute we stepped foot through the door. They have a great menu selection… and made me feel at home… away from home. I’m from South Mississippi so I was excited to see some down home favorites on the menu… such as Gumbo, shrimp n grits… fried pickles to name a few. There was a bit of a wait but I didn’t mind because I know real soul food isnt cooked at a fast pace. My daughter had the Philly steak and cheese. and it was delicious and full of tender steak. I had chicken wings, Mac n cheese, cornbread(with chunks of corn) yum. Shugga made sure we were comfy while waiting for our food and even treated both of us to free drinks. The sweet tea is amazing. I tried my daughters potato crisps and talk about heaven in your mouth. This is my new favorite place for comfort food in Newport News. Y’all d oin’ it right Shugga Mommas!
