Finally came for ice cream. Can’t eat the food with such big portions and eat ice cream afterwards.

I ate here twice last week while attending a work conference. Great food, large portions and a varied menu with a lot of choices here. It’s a diner-soda fountain with typical burger, fry and ice cream type menu offerings that are really tasty, but the real secret about Flashback’s is their pizzas and calzones that are hidden at the back of the menu. They are excellent and they are BIG and not what you would expect to find here! One of my co-workers who is a very big eater and former football player could not finish his calzone it was so big. «That’s a small?!» He said as I laughed when they brought it to the table because I knew what was coming. They take a bit of time to cook because they are so big and made fresh, so bring quarters and enjoy the arcade inside and fifties and sixties music in the jukebox. A family member recommended this place and got our family going here years ago when they were at the south end of Newport. Then they moved and are still a great restaurant. We would love to see some color added to the sterile white walls, but I get the fifties theme.

Great service on weekends. Pizza is large and hot. They have a better than average crust. The calzone are top notch. Food is always hot and service is fast. The staff was pleasant and friendly with a pep in their step.

Quick, friendly service. They did a great job with the kids. Younger ones appreciated the pictures in the kids menu. They also loved the cars their food was served in.

I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with curly fries. It was good but nothing special about it. Service was extremely slow. Everyone else with my group got normal fries and they were alot of bad fries and not crispy at all. I would not return.

My burger was supposed to come with onions, and it didn’t. I also had a Unilocal coupon(shameless plug) for a free soda for everyone in our party. All 3 of us. Ponyboy the weirdo only gave us 1 free soda, and the fries were awful. Don’t get me wrong– I dig the retro thing, even though Elvis was a homo. I should have had a shake, I bet they are good there. Pretty average place. I should have complained but didn’t, my bad, probably will only be back to try the shakes.

Enjoyed the food it was really good and filling really good portions. If you are into 60’s themed diners then this place is great I really enjoyed myself they have a jukebox that had the entire grease soundtrack on it and it was awesome. I got the Swiss Burger with asu sauce and it was delicious. Also they have 1lb hamburgers that you could double and make it a 2lb Burger which is insane. Service was good but there was only one waiter.

The waiter greeted us as we came to the«wait to be seated» area. My husband and my son were excited about the arcade room with the many classic games. I ordered the All-American basket with waffle fries + a strawberry shake. My son decided on a «dry» classic basket with curly fries + choc. milk. My husband ordered a mushroom-Swiss burger and clam chowder + choc. shake. We waited for almost an hour – there were 2 other tables of customers! Our drinks came, and my son noticed that his $ 3 choc milk was no more than choc syrup in regular milk. WAITED more. Our order came and we asked for«fry Sauce» which the waiter didn’t know of it, but said they had 12 other dipping sauces. He then stated that the(TO-GO) sauces were .50PER! My bill came to $ 40.65 and I CANTGETCOMPEDDIPPINGSAUCE??? We are out-of-towners here til Monday, and we were going to go back because they have quite the variety menu. Needless to say– we didn’t buy sauce, and we surely will not be going back – even for the awesome arcade(that might steal your quarters.) My husband & son wanted to play the games, so we asked for cash back off my debit. The waiter said, «That the wife will only allow increments of $ 10» and he’d charge a $ 1 for every $ 10 because the companies charge them, and they in return charge the customers. I go to pay the bill with the ice cream girl and give the business a 12.5% tip, and she looked unsatisfied with that amount of gratuity. I won’t even get started about what we experienced(with the food) when we got back to the motel room. The ONLY thing I can say that is POSITIVE about this business is that my husband enjoyed the chowder.

Not a great dinner. Won’t be returning. Waitstaff was friendly, but incompetent. *Brought 2 waters for our party of 4 *brought milkshakes, with no straws *they were out of forks. I’ll repeat this one: they were OUTOFFORKS. Milkshakes were very good, burger was dry and flavorless, pizza was flavorless as well, there was no sauce on it, and also it was quite burnt. They did reimburse my daughter for all the quarter machines that straight up just ate her quarters. That’s about it.

Everything about our experience here at flashbacks had its drawbacks. Service: As soon as we walked through the doors there was a large sign listing the days specials. I was very disappointed and honestly a little bitter when the manager of the established me told me that they do not do substitutions on any of the special items. Which I can understand but all I asked for was cheddar cheese instead of swiss. He also neglected to give me any other alternative option. A real turn off in my book. Food: The burgers that we ordered were less then great. A word to the wise, don’t order regular french fries, they were a stale reheated mess. On the other hand the waffle fries were obviously made to order and the onion rings were good. Though, I suggest a dipping sauce other than ranch, we found it to be extremely salty! I don’t think we will over go back unless we come to try the shakes or to play buck hut!

My girlfriend and I had been on the road since 4am traveling up the coast. We checked into our hotel in Newport just before 7pm and decided to run out and grab a quick bite to eat before crashing hard for the night. Flashbacks Fountain and Grill was listed in the Hotel’s Surrounding Area dining section. It sounded good. The place was clean, but empty at just after 7pm; one occupied table when we entered. It is the typical 50s style Fountain with the black and white checkered floor, bright red chairs and booths with chrome accented chairs and tables, and of course the sound of Oldies filling the air. We were seated and then we waited. We waited for almost 10 minutes in an empty restaurant, and just after I had asked my girlfriend if she wanted to leave, our waiter walked up and took our order. He was nice and made us feel welcome. My girlfriend ordered the Pizza Fries and I ordered a bacon burger with guacamole. The food arrived a half hour later, with both of us damn near asleep. Ha! My burger would have been killer had the cook not forgotten about it on the grill. It was beyond well done and just no more flavor left to give. The bun, however, was soft and fresh and the bacon and other condiments were spot on. It was a shame because I am sure that burger, during a rush, is quite tasty. My girlfriend wasn’t exactly enthralled about her pizza fries as they were all soggy underneath the sauce and cheese; You kind of have to expect that really. She still ate it as we were hungry. I do have to mention something positive though. Our waitress(yes we got the ol’ «switch-a-roo» in an empty restaurant), who was nice as well, brought out a side of marinara sauce for the Pizza Fries and I gotta be frank… Someone put some love into that sauce because it was fantastic. If I were to make a meatball sandwich, that would be the sauce I’d want on it! It made me realize that we probably should of ordered a pizza, but then again, the wait for a burger and fries was long enough. The best part of our experience was leaving with a single scoop of ice cream each. Interesting flavors and quality ice cream. I really wanted to give this place three stars, but based on our experience, we will try someplace else the next time we are in Newport. 2 enthusiastic stars?

Ordered fish n chips that came with clam chowder and bread sticks. My bf and I loved the fried tiliapia compared to the popular ocean seafood place. The fries however were not the best. It seemed they needed to change their oil because the fries were brown. The pizza fries we got were very tasty although it still had brown fries. I think cheese makes anything«meh» turn amazing It was my bday that day and I got a free sundae. :) there ice cream flavors changes but that day I got the cake batter flavor and mudslide Customer service was excellent. Very nice people who work there.

Food was good! Service was fine! I had the clam chowder. It’s home made, and it was good. Not great. The waffle fries were pretty good and the ranch was delicious! My dad ordered the banana split! Pretty good! My sister had a cookie dough milkshake… GREAT! Overall good :) will come back!

Food is OK, price is OK, but overall just Meh. The hour I was there(took forever just to order food, and get it served) the sound system, I mean jukebox played the same 5 or so ‘50s themed songs about 5 times each. I really think they only had like 5 songs on repeat, not a good idea if you keep people there that long. I got a vanilla shake that was Really good though. Made me think of the scene in Pulp Fiction when they talk about the $ 10 shake. Overall its a ‘50s themed greasy spoon/diner that just falls short on the theme, and service, but does well with its food and shakes. Most likely would not eat here again, if I ever came back to town.

I really wish Unilocal allowed rating in ½ star increments because this place is firmly at 2.5 stars in my book. The food is decent. The prices were a little high but about what you would expect for a tourist area. The waitress was friendly. The jukebox was broken. The 50s theme they are going for didn’t really work for me. Anyone can put in a jukebox and hang James Dean pictures on the wall. If you are going for nostalgia I think you have to find a way to summon the soul and vibe of the period. ATLEAST have the jukebox going so there is music.

Unremarkable food, poor service, burger drenched in grease. Your basic American food industry fare. Failed to honor my Unilocal coupon. Seriously, you would be better off going to McDonalds down the street.

This is the new location of flashbacks Fountain & Grill in north Newport(as opposed to where they used to be down in the Southbeach area…) I love the potential of their new digs — great black & white tile floors — a Happy Days jukebox(okay, it’s not«Happy Days» — there’s no such thing — but that’s what I thought of as I scooted into the red booth and ordered my late lunch.) After a long day of errands and taking care of details, this was exactly what I needed. Cute, friendly, and the opposite of serious and formal… they’ve got a big menu — full of snacky goodness(many fried and spicy wonders, burgers, pizza, and even salads– gasp) — and an ice cream case just waiting to be turned into shakes and sundaes… I wasn’t quite hungry enough to go for the full monty on this trip, so I skipped the frozen treats and went straight for a burger — a burger version of a French Dip, loaded with grilled onions and swiss cheese with a side of fries and a cup of au jus. It was a small burger(they use 1/3lb patties, according to the menu) but it was plenty, and the fries were crispy and hot — and snapped when I bit into the first one — just perfect. There was no salt on the fries — just fried potatoes, but they were surprisingly sweet and good. I mean, REALLY surprising. And really good. I told husband about the place when I got home, and he was excited that I’d found a good burger and pizza joint — as that is his favorite date-night kind of spot… especially since they have ice cream, lol. I suspect we will be going back often! Oh – and did I mention the room full of arcade games? :D we’ll be back.
