This mom-and-pop sushi joint blows all the other competition out of the water. The fish is always fresh, the food is always good, and the price is unbeatable.

This is basically a to-go only place. I walked in and had a 15 minute wait, which isn’t bad. Forewarned is for-armed. The California roll was solid but the Avo Avo roll was NOT. There was far too much avocado to be enjoyable, and the other fillings were not to be found. I ended up not being able to finish it. Avocado is very squishy, and the texture overwhelms the rice and any other filling(crunchies? spice?). I probably would not return… or maybe would just stick to things I know.

My favorite place for take out sushi, solely for the price and portion. In terms of taste, it’s good, but definitely not as good as some other of the other sushi places in Boston. However, it is an amazing deal for the price and the portion of fish they put in each roll! I love salmon, so I get salmon rolls often, and Takara Sushi’s rolls definitely pack in more of that delicious fish than other sushi restaurants! I recommend calling ahead to place your order. I’ve walked in a couple of times to 1+ hour waits and had to leave because there’s no way I can wait that long… :(The couple that runs the shop are great though, they’ll let you know how long the wait will be, especially if it’s going to be a long one! My favorites are the East Maki, Sake Maki, Sake Avo Maki, and Shrimp Tempura Maki!

Takara Sushi is a very small restaurant, basically only for takeout. The owners are very nice. I got the Sushi Lunch Special. For Newton this was decent priced for the food. It was nothing special and I was not full. I suggest only going here if you’re craving sushi and don’t feel like driving anywhere beyond Newton.

Has the best sushi around Newton. I have gone to this place many time and I am still not sick of the delicious sushi they make. Just make sure you order over phone cause it can get busy.

I love this place. The two owners are sweet as can be, and always make super fresh sushi. With all of the overpriced sushi joints in the area this place is a breath of fresh air. Note that they can get very busy during peak hours, so make sure to call well in advance unless you want to wait a long time.

Great little spot. Good food and quality. Tiny so don’t expect to get a seat at the 2 tables and be ready to get it to go. Spicy tuna roll was solid, good size. The Crazy roll was 4 giant pieces and excellent.

i always walk by this little restaurant on my to and from work. decided on the day before a blizzard, why not get some sushi?! the owners are really cute and super friendly. I ordered a sashimi deluxe and a few rolls. everything was fresh and what I loved was that they were not skimpy on the fish, the rolls didn’t have too much rice and the right amount of fish. will definitely be a regular at this joint :)

It’s kind of a fast-food sushi but in a good way. It’s a little hole in the wall. The owners are the ones who prepare the sushi and serve it in seconds in front of you. I recommend it. Delicious!

This is my fav’ sushi place. No place to dine in as its a very small space. Sushi is consistent and really large pices. The couple that owns it are extreamly nice. You will not be disappointed!

Tasty sushi with a great selection of fresh fish, but order to go. Shared the following with my gf: –Lunch special 9.25(5 pcs sushi and 6 pcs California maki) –Boston maki $ 6.75 –Rainbow maki $ 9.95 All of the rolls were good size and super fresh. The Rainbow roll was my favorite. Note: the place is tiny with 2 tables and no bathroom, so get it to go.

Very rude. First timer tonight. Walked in to place a large order and got yelled at with an almost incoherent«…long wait, long wait» without the courteous hello. I simply said okay and walked my party of 4 outside the door. Unlikely to ever return now even though I live around the corner. It was clear they didn’t want to deal with another order so close to closing.

Great take out place for sushi. The fish is always fresh. Very generous size sushi. Definitely plan and call ahead for your order as sometimes the wait can be an hour plus.

I walked by this place and didn’t think much of it but I read the strong Unilocal reviews and gave it a try. Great find! Good sushi, very reasonable prices. I’ll be going to Takara plenty.

First off, let me say that Takara would earn 5 stars absolutely if the rating was only based on the beautiful sushi you can get at a tiny take-out japanese joint in the newton highlands. However, let me start by saying that Takara has decidedly made the decision to remain hard to find on the web. It is difficult to find the menu unless you have a physical copy of the menu. Also, they have strange hours. My wife and I went by during«business hours» for a take-out lunch but the door was locked despite the people being inside. Not sure if the hours are wrong or if they weren’t ready on that day, but strange nonetheless. The older couple who owns the place are very nice and welcoming. We went in and ordered one of the sushi combos for 3 of us to go, it was $ 52 and provided a very nice assortment of thick cut nigiri and 5 different maki rolls. The fish was delicious. Very fresh, very flavorful, and a nice variety. It did take a bit to make, but hey, fresh deliciousness always does take a while. These guys obviously know what they are doing, and I look forward to giving them lots of business in the future. What a gem! Now that I have a better idea of what I am working with, I will have to get a better understanding of their hours. If you live in the area, and love fresh fish for a very reasonable price, give this place a try. You surely will not be disappointed!

I am completely addicted to Takara Sushi. I’ve been coming at least once a week, and it’s been consistently great. Looove the spicy tuna maki!

It’s almost literally a hole in the wall, and if you blink you’ll miss it, but considering it’s in Newton, the sushi is surprisingly good. It’s a two-person operation(a sweet husband and wife team) with only one table, and take-out is definitely encouraged. I don’t mind that in the least bit, especially since it’s so close to where I live, although I kind of wish they delivered. I really dig their variety of veggie sushi, my favorite being the Spicy Avo Avo Maki. I mean, tempura! Avocado! Spicy mayo! What’s not to love? The only roll I didn’t like was one with avocado and sweet potato(blanking on the name, sorry) where the sweet potato was seriously undercooked. I’ve ordered other rolls with sweet potato that have been fine, so I’m guessing it was just a one-time fluke. Also, they have Ramune! Yes, I know that my love for these sodas(especially the lychee flavor) is downright childish, but I don’t care. Anyhow, check this place out — the sushi is inexpensive, original and seriously tasty.

I thought it was okay, my wife thought it was terrible. The Newton Roll looked like avocado throw up and Avo Avo Maki was just plain gross. Although I initially thought that the massive rolls and chunks of nigiri meat were a good thing, it just turned out to be altogether gross. The salad with ginger dressing is an overpriced plastic box full of iceberg lettuce with three(no kidding!) shreds of carrots on top and a side of nasty ginger dressing. Blech.

FANTASTICPLACE– This is my go to place for sushi as I am from Newton. It’s a small little place, only 1 table, so don’t expect to sit down with a large party here. Take out is where it’s at with this place. Sushi is super fresh and definitely larger than average portions! I ALWAYS get the crunchy AVOAVOMAKI. If you love avocado– then this is the sushi to get. The portion is HUGE, with lots of avocado in the middle and it’s under about $ 6? Too good. I often get the Boston Maki as well, just so I can eat some raw fish, which is also VERY delicious. Throw in a Salmon Avocado hand roll, with it’s very THICK piece of Salmon, and it’s a meal. AVOAVOMAKI for the win!

I love this place! Ever since I moved to Newton i’ve been looking for good sushi that isn’t all about the fancy-ness that comes with it. This place is the REALDEAL and as authentic as you can get in the area. The raw fish itself is so fresh and for the price, I was surprised at how big the rolls are. Salmon is my favorite but everything is really good here. Protions for sashimi and sushi rolls are awesome! It’s more of a take out place than a sit down eat place(same size or even smaller than super fusion in brookline) but there are a few chairs and tables to eat on. The Japanese couple that works behind the counter is really nice but they are all about the business and their food so I wouldn’t expect to chit chat with them. They do offer more special fancy rolls but I love their sashimi more.
