Hands DOWN — my favorite sushi spot in all of Boston — please folks — disregard any mention/comment made about this being«mall sushi». It happens to be in a mall, but it also happens to be amazing food and people. Period. The service is exceptional. Especially given that it is a small sushi restaurant where you might(understandably) be expected to eat and go. I come here often — and has never failed me once since they opened. Sometimes I’m solo, often I’m with a group — always very welcoming and the menu has options for all ages and tastes.

As a person with allergies I approached the maitre d’ and asked how I could be accommodated. The response was unexpected — I was told I should eat somewhere else. Having a specific allergy to a single seafood, a SINGLE seafood has never kept me from dining — even in seafood restaurants. No assurance could be made and no alternative was offered. I was shocked and insulted. But, now I can share my experience. Food allergies are not accommodated. I won’t go back.

Great food… but, a friend and I went on a Tuesday night to enjoy and catch up. For two of us we ordered a good deal of food and drinks, neither a small Bill not a small tip. It was the end of the night and there were only two other parties in the restaurant. Our server came and took the final check while we were still finishing our drinks. Then, she hovered over us until we really felt we had no choice but to leave. Sad because I really liked the food but I found this server’s eagerness to get us off the table(noobe waiting) set a bad tone for the entire night. Very bad experience, doubt I would go back. I don’t understand why someone else couldn’t have cleared the two glasses from our table if she was so eager to leave. We were certainly not the only ones left in the place. Pretty bad experience unfortunately.

I really hate to give this place a bad review, as we have had good meals there in the past. However, today we had a shockingly bad experience there. We waited a long time for a table. When we were finally seated, we ordered the same dishes we have ordered several times before. Because I have a shellfish allergy, I always ask the chef to use a clean knife and cutting board when preparing my maki rolls in sushi restaurants. I have never had a problem with this request until today. This time, the waitress returned to our table and announced that the kitchen was«too busy» to wash their knife and cutting board, and that they would not serve me. I was shocked. We asked for the manager, who came and told me that his chef was refusing to help me, and that there was«nothing he could do.» Washing a cutting board and knife is a small request, and even very busy and fancy sushi restaurants on busy Saturday nights have politely done this. I feel that I was treated rudely and won’t go back. Fuji at Kendall is a better option.

Sushi lovers comes here!!! I go to Chestnuthill Mall to shop a lot and I discovered Daikanyama I was hooked! I went in just this past weekend with my mother and we were nicely greeted and shown to our seats. We ordered two glasses of wine and was given some edamame to start which is always delicious! As we looked at the menus we were also given a little table that had more sushi and food options which is nice to put a picture to what you may want to order. We decided to get three sushi rolls to share. 1. Green Dragon Spicy yellowtail, topped with avocado It was delicious!!! I would recommend this to anyone would likes yellowtail! 2. Spicy Gaki Katsu Maki Deep fried oysters, avocado, tobikko, cucumber and scallion Sounds a little strange at first oysters in sushi, nope don’t even think twice get it! 3.Black Forest Maki Unagi, sweet potato tempura and avocado, topped with unagi sauce and black tobikko Sweet potato tempura is always so good! I would recommend this place for anyone looking for a quick bit to eat while shopping at Chestnuthill Mall or even coming out for a girls night get drinks and sushi! I also ordered the seaweed salad which was amazing! The best I have had by far! The staff is very accommodating if you don’t want any spicy sauce in your sushi as well! The place is very clean and well run! I will be returning for a girl night to get sushi and drinks for sure!

The best Japanese food I have had outside of Japan. The pottery adds so much to the experience as well.

I saw a relatively good reviews so I thought I would give this place a try. What a disappointment. First the service was not particularly good they were slow and after bringing me my first plate rarely came back to see how I was doing. I requested that my dishes be prepared without wasabe. The waiter confirmed with me and the sushi chef as I was seated at the sushi bar. All three roles that I ordered came with wasabe. when I brought it to the waiters attention he was not interested . Even more annoying was the constant sniffing and grunting noises from the sushi chef behind the bar — it was repugnant. and while the tablets they used to order from is a neat idea they were so filthy it was disgusting. Hard to tell if the food was good, or the quality of the fish given I don’t care for wasabe, but the whole deal added up to a poor experience.

Chestnut Hill Mall. Feeling hungry and adventurous. Why not try Daikanyama? This Japanese restaurant is located within Bloomingdales, which took us a little effort to find. We didn’t have a reservation but for a Friday night(7pm) and fairly packed restaurant, the wait time was only a reasonable 20 minutes. We were seated at a table for two alongside fellow patrons about an arms length away.(So if an intimate/private conversation is what you had in mind – this is not your place). Our waitress was friendly enough – she kept our water glasses full and walked by several times to check on us. I ordered Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura with Udon soup($ 18). The udon soup was delicious – the udon noodles cooked to perfection and the soup flavorful without being overly salty. The tempura batter was rather flavorless, especially noticeable when fried with the vegetables, but the shrimp tempura was good. My friend ordered the Chicken Nabeyaki Udon($ 15). At first glance, it looked like a very greasy chicken lo mein. I didnt taste it – but my friend claimed it was just«ok.» Overall, I’d probably give this place another shot. I’d like to try the makimono or sushi rolls for which they are more known for…

Plain, simple and highly competent. I’ve only eaten here for weekend lunch — so have only ordered their standard sushi/sashimi lunch special(not available on Sundays). The plate featured a fairly standard selection: tuna maki, tuna sashimi, salmon sashimi, mackerel nigiri, tuna nigiri, salmon nigiri and shrimp nigiri. The lunch special includes salad, miso and 2 dumplings. What sets Daikanyama apart? Execution and attention to detail. Although I enjoyed the actual fish, I’d put it on a par with Fugakyu. That said, everything that surrounded the fish proved delicious and well-made. The wasabi possessed strong flavor, as did the pickled ginger, the ginger dressing on the salad and little blob of seaweed salad that accompanied the dumplings. Even the mori wrap on the tekka maki possessed strong flavor! I also enjoyed the shrimp tempura appetizer — light, flaky panko that nevertheless proved crunchy and flavorful. Very well done. Nice setting(especially for a mall restaurant).

Exquisite little space tucked away and very soothing style. Every place setting and dish is so well crafted it is a work of art. The service is excellent and understated. The prices are high but everything is fresh and healthy. So this is a way to treat yourself, it is no ordinary Japanese restaurant.

Very random location in Bloomingdales, which was hard to find. I am giving this place 2 stars because of the vegetable/tofu udon noodles in soy sauce broth that I got. The soup tasted bland, like lightly salted water. It came with some spinach, mushrooms, slices of tofu, and the noodles. Honestly, I probably could have made this dish myself for $ 2, but it ended up costing me $ 15+ tip and tax. There was nothing special about the sushi roll that we got as well. The pieces were really small. The service was average, and the waitress seemed snooty. There are much better sushi/ramen/udon restaurants in Boston.

Probably the best sushi in Newton. The rolls are a standout — they usually have two dozen specials displayed on an iPad that they bring to the table. The agedashi tofu has tiny mushrooms in it which adds an unusual and delicious touch. The nigiri sushi is fresh and flavorful. We’ve been to Daikanyama maybe 10 times and expect to remain regulars. Don’t be put off that it’s in a mall attached to Bloomingdale’s. This is not«mall sushi,» it’s the real thing.

The food here is EXCELLENT. Everything is super fresh, elegant, and delicious. We always order almost half the menu and have never been let down by a single dish. A lot of care and thought is put towards every single dish. The Mai tais are also very good. The servers and staff are also very attentive, helpful, clean and polite. They are very gracious hosts. The décor is also very unique and interesting with a waterfall wall. The plates themselves range from traditional Japanese style to modern white porcelain. This is one of my absolute favorite restaurants. 5+ stars all around. Can’t say enough about the great quality of this place. I love going out to eat here for dinner and/or lunch.

Daikanyama is located in the Bloomingdales. If you’re entering Bloomingdales from the parking lot, the Forty Carrots is on the left and Daikanyama is on the right. I ate here tonight with very low expectations. After all, it’s a Japanese restaurant in a mall. It must be expensive and not very good, right? Au contraire! We got adedashi tofu, tatsute age, avocado salad, whole grilled squid, green dragon maki, and white catepillar maki. Everything was very tasty! I especially liked the avocado salad and the whole grilled squid. If I had one thing to complain about, it was that the maki was a bit on the smaller side. While we were eating, we saw some delicious noodle dishes being order at the table next to us. Will definitely give that a try next time!

Walking into fancy décor and pretentious atmosphere, I was expecting upscale overpriced and disappointing meal. However, I was glad to be proven wrong. For lunch, Daikanyama is a great deal! All lunch specials include miso soup and salad. I really enjoyed the miso dressing on the salad and the simplicity of the miso soup. I ordered the black pork tonkatsu. It came quickly, with white rice and some other sides. For the pork tonkatsu, the outside was crispy and the inside was moist and flavorful. The sauce for the pork tonkatsu was also amazing! There were a small side of fruits that completed the meal. I would definitely recommend this place. The service was also very thoughtful and courteous. While I can’t speak to a dinner experience here, this place is a great spot for lunch!

Never would have guessed you could get outstanding sushi in a mall! Daikanyama is one of the most pleasant surprises my wife and I have encountered in our sushi adventures. Having soured on some of our old standby sushi joints that have declined(such as Fugakyu), we have been delighted to find Daikanyama. The ambiance is soothing and conducive to good conversation. The waitstaff are extremely courteous and knowledgeable about the menu. Daikanyama has their regular menu and then their specials menu which is given to you on a color tablet(Nook/Kindle) which really let’s you see what the food looks like. We have been back several times and usually get a selection of their amazingly presented and delicious sushi rolls. Particular standouts include the sunset roll(which features seared tuna), the green dragon, and Yokohama roll. The Yokohama roll is overflowing with great fish and tobiko. No matter what your tastes, they have incredible sushi options. Not always a highlight of sushi restaurants, the desserts at Daikanyama are excellent. The best dessert takes a few minutes extra to prepare. It’s a huge thick buttered piece of sweet toast served with sweet whipped cream and fresh fruit. Easily a dessert for two people. It comes out hot and is the perfect way to cap of a great sushi meal. Daikanyama can compete with any of the other local sushi restaurants in both freshness of fish, creativity, and service. Our highest recommendation!
