While most of the bakery sweets are heavy, their icing is wonderful. I have sampled many of their buns, cookies, bars, cakes, and they are all fun to eat. My favorites are the Apple Cake which reminds me of the densely moist version my Yiddish grandmother made on most holidays, and the Lemon Bars which are equal parts tart and sweet with powdered sugar dusted on top, and a firm crunchy base. Both are addicting and require self control to make them last.

Confused. I have been here often and always liked their desserts. Recently, I was buying something and I noticed that in the back one of the employees/workers had taken two boxes of Pullman’s cakes and put them on the counter. Pullman is a brand of cakes, pies, tortes that you can buy at various gourmet/grocery stores. He opened the boxes, took out a big knife, and cut the cakes in quarters. Repackaged them, slapped a label on them, and put them on the shelf to sell. Makes me wonder which of the goods here are truly«homemade». I’ve never seen anything like it.

I have absolutely never had better desserts, even at Le Bec Fin. I kid you not! This fare is, obviously, much simpler, but in my book it absolutely cannot be beat. Try the cream doughnuts– they probably have 1,000 calories each but I DON’T CARE. Be sure to go on a Thursday or Friday, as by Saturday they will run out of things and not replenish them because the market is only open Thurs-Sat. Definitely worth a visit! Prices are very reasonable, as well.

I felt like I was at the largest bake sale in the history of mankind. I have never seen so many«homemade» sweets in my life. Large ovens lined one wall and work tables in front of them covering the floor. Beyond this were floor and upright open coolers filled with cream pies and cheesecakes. Another large area had walls with shelves filled with homemade breads, rolls, even for hot dogs and burgers. Cookies rolled, formed or cut into bars. Donuts raised or cake, filled or not, pastries, sticky buns and two dozen varieties of fruit pies. Cakes to be purchased whole, half or a nice large slice. Cake rolls filled to the brim, chocolate or pumpkin whoopie pies(where I grew up we call them gobs), lemon or other fruit bars. Bagels, zucchini, banana or other fruit or whole grained breads. Shoo-Fly pie, brownies or cinnamon twirls, they also have sugar free products. All of the vendors in this Farmer’s market, that I witnessed anyway, have a simple cash drawer and add everything with paper and pencil. No list of what they sell here, but you can check out their website which does have a partial list of their baked goods @ or This Pa. Dutch, Amish Farmer’s market is only open Thursday through Saturday, we first went on a Saturday a few hours before they were getting ready to close. Knowing they will be closed for the next four days, they allow items to run low or out. Our selection was still quite good, but I do believe the products would have been fresher on Thursday, which we will find out this week. I bought quite a bit here, even though hubby is the one with the sweet tooth. The gobs were moist and okay for flavor, next time I will try the pumpkin ones. I have made gobs since I was a kid and putting one cup of hot strong coffee in the chocolate batter makes a world of difference instead of adding hot water, plus I have a cooked filling, where they used a whipped cream type of filling. The lemon bars were tangy and sprinkled with powdered sugar and hit the palate the way they were meant to, the crust was like a shortbread cookie and were not skimpy with the lemon filling, very good. The pumpkin bread was much better than the carrot cake, both were moist, but the carrot cake lacked in spices, nuts and raisins. The German chocolate cake was moist and the flavor was good, but I tend to add a lot more filling to mine. I’m anxious to try much more, like the beautiful apple dumplings, sticky buns or cinnamon rolls and hubby made me put back the Key lime pie, which was what I really wanted, next time I will get it for sure. He can be such a brat.
