I lived in one of Haskew Properties buildings for eight months. I got totally screwed during my move-out process. Charged for a bunch of things that I shouldn’t have had to pay for and scolded several times for leaving the apartment dirty, despite having agreed INWRITING to having the apartment cleaned. Examples of unnecessary fees: replacing sink parts, removing a curtain rod that was there when we moved in, replacing the drawer guides though they didn’t work when we moved in, removing a cable from the living room that was there when we moved in, recaulking the tub, etc. etc. The apartment is old and we shouldn’t have had to pay to fix the old stuff. That should be their responsibility. They own two properties in Oakland and are literally rolling in dough so knowing that they’re charging people for this stuff is infuriating. It was an extremely unpleasant experience. Furthermore, as a young queer and gender non-conforming person I did not feel comfortable doing business with them. They spoke to me in a patronizing tone on more than one occasion. The housing situation in Oakland sucks so bad that landlords can get away with all kinds of stuff. But, they are not the kind of innocent elderly people that they may seem upon first meeting.

The incident which led me to write this review is two years ago, but I just recently met someone who had lived here, and there’s some irony which will become obvious in a moment. I had been looking in Rockridge for a long time for an apartment, and had been here once before to look — the guy who showed us around was really nice — the apartments themselves are very 60s, and a little run down, although there has been a little renovation in some of them, but it’s defintiely not the most modern place. On the second visit, I was shown round by the land lady, and showed interest in an awesome two bedroom with a really stunning view of the bay. A touch pricey(«market rate» apparently, which is just an excuse to jack it up), but certainly not out of my budget. Over the next couple of days we agreed terms, and all looked good. On Jan 1st(!) she called me, and made up a variety of excuses why she no longer wanted me — claiming for example meant my questions about money meant I couldn’t fford it(I could, my credit is excellent) and couldn’t be trusted, and best of all, because I had mentioned several Unilocal reviews of the property. In fact, that was one of the first times I used Unilocal seriously, and they were dead on. Some of those reviews are now gone, but here’s mine. Anyway a couple of weeks later, I ended up in a better place nearby that was substantially cheaper, had about the best landlord ever, better parking, and although of the same era, not run down. Not the same awesome view, but still pretty good. Karma’s a bitch. You don’t want to live here.
