I tried the Strawberry Rhubarb hand pies, and they were absolutely delicious! They tasted fresh, and the crust was the perfect consistency. It was hard to only eat one. I also rarely get hand pies, and they’re just more fun than taking a slice out of a large pie. I’d highly recommend them for catering. Also, Valerie is really sweet and pleasant to interact with.

Valerie was great! She took a super last minute delivery order for my brothers birthday. She delivered to his school and when they couldn’t find anyone in the main office she walked around to find him in the school. Very communicative and heard the cookies were delic.

Simply put, Val made the best pecan pie and the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had. As a southerner with delectable family recipes for both, this is quite a feat indeed. I am now commissioning a pie with Val for an upcoming trip that will be some combination of blackberry, custard, and pecan. Night Bakery is now my go-​to for special treats on special occasions. Can’t recommend highly enough.

The Night Bakery is the answer to your sweet tooth cravings. Seriously, the BEST scone I’ve ever had. Every Monday morning I run around Lake Merritt and reward myself with a delectable fennel cream currant scone at Haddon Hill Café (where you can find The Night Bakery’s gems featured daily). Val, the goddess behind the N.B., also makes delicious pies and adorable miniature version hand pies — strawberry rhubarb is my favorite. Buttery flakey goodness on the outside, gooey sweetness on the inside — perfection. Go to Haddon Hill NOW or place an order directly with Val. You won’t regret it!

Valerie is INCREDIBLE. I love my job, but as an assistant I am asked to get some pretty random and hard to find items at very short notice. This time, it was rhubarb pie… At the end of rhubarb season. I called Valerie because I saw people raving about her rhubarb pie on Unilocal,but I was not expecting the type of amazing service I got. She must have called every market in Oakland to track down some of the last rhubarb even available, and kept me informed about her search. She put a ton of effort in and was able to find some (thank God!) and made me that rhubarb pie. We just finished celebrating the employees birthday that the pie was intended for, and the pie was out of this world! FANTASTIC customer service, and divine pie? I put Valerie’s card in our company’s preferred list. When we have any other employees with birthday pie wishes, Valerie is the one I will be calling again!

A friend of mine special delivered a strawberry-​rhubarb hand pie this morning and I literally savored it for hours. I had one bite every 30 minutes or so with the intention of every bite being like the first… it worked. I can’t wait to try all of the others. Will definitely order for my next party. Thank you!

There is an art to scone making and you will find it at Haddon Hill. Val, the baker behind the sweets of your dreams, has pro hands. Thick exterior, moist, soft subtly-​sweet innards scones. I’ve also tried her cranberry hand-​pies that you will eat at a snail’s pace because the last bite is so sad.

Thank’s to Valerie and her amazing Hand Pies, I have successfully developed yet another addiction and another excuse to cross that great body of water between SF and Oakland.
I ordered a dozen apple cinnamon hand pies for the Christmas Holiday. I had to keep them under lock and key to ensure they made it until Christmas. Once the box was opened they disappeared almost immediately.
The crust on these tasty delights must be made from pure heaven (or butter,) Flaky, rich and amazing!
Valerie uses seasonal fruits; so being winter I opted for apple. Although the Cranberry orange pies were equally amazing!
I am looking forward to summer when I can order strawberry rhubarb pies. I will start fasting now in preparation for the 900 pound I plan on gaining from eating a million Strawberry hand pies!
Now to go try some of these scones everyone is raving about…

The scone is the best scone on the planet. Lo mejor. Fennel, current, milky not dry and crumbly… great consistency! Hand pies are also amazing. Buttery, flakey crusts with a filling that’s never too sweet or too tart but just right. If I didn’t ever have to go to work ever again I think I would eat Night Bakery treats all day on a blanket under a tree by the lake until I couldn’t possibly eat another bite. On weekends I wake up trying to decide what I’ll order as soon as I can scramble into my jeans. Get to Haddon Hill Café as soon as you can and sample the best baked goods this side of the Mississippi!

The baked goods that come out of The Night Bakery are as good as it gets.
I am ruined for eating another scone. The fennel current scone was light, airy, unlike any other scone I have eaten. The quiche sold out within one hour of it being offered. I urge you to RUN, not walk, over to the Haddon Hill Café, you will thank me!

If you are around Lake Merritt before 3pm any day of the week, you are in luck because the night baker’s goods are available at the café at 504 Wesley.
Who is the mysterious night baker? And why is her stuff so amazingly delicious?
Wait, I can answer that: made with an artisan’s sense of texture, a craftsman’s use of savory and sweet tastes, this is pastry for the adult palate. No mushy kids’ stuff.
I love the mushroom quiche, fennel currant scones and flaky hand pies (which taste like pie only you can eat them with one hand).
I can’t wait to see what she cooks up next!

recently ordered a chocolate orange cake which we have been enjoying this week. the flavors are spot on and exquisite. possibly the most authentic cake maker in oakland at the moment.
