Mystical Horizons

The shop itself is packed and the staff is very friendly. The readings are up in the air, and the only thing I rated this place down for. This really, really, depends on who is reading here. I’ve had an extremely good reading, and two bad ones. The good one was extremely detailed and informative; the reader hardly asked anything and just gave me straight information. This was a man; I don’t remember his name, but it seems there are much fewer men readers than women.
The two women readers I had were not as good. I’ve had a lot of readings before, so I can tell when someone is fishing for information and cold reading. The most recent reader (her name was something like Varlene or Verlene?) was friendly, but claimed to be clairvoyant and yet could only give me the vaguest of details without asking me for more information. She did not manage to connect with anyone, but kept asking questions and feeding me information that could have applied to nearly anyone of my age range and sex. Most of the information she gave did not apply (even some of the general stuff) and made no sense to me. Maybe it was an off day for her, but I would not go back again if she were the reader.

You might not expect to find a small, homey New Age-​slash-​Pagan shop smack in the middle of historic Mystic, but if you seek this little place out you may find yourself pleasantly surprised. When I was a wee Matthew being raised partly by a very spiritual step-​mother, I’d often stop in here. As a kid this mostly consisted of running my hands through huge bins of gemstones.
During my high school years I went through the beginning throes of a Wicca phase without ever actually committing beyond the buying-​books-​about-​paganism stage. Still, this was (and remains) a much better option than, say, the «New Age» section at the Crystal Mall Waldenbooks (scoff, scoff).
Friendly, cozy, and mysterious, this is like that one scene out of The Craft but without the cheesy woman telling people about their witch-​mother destiny. They sell just about anything you’d need to set up your own altar, and plenty more besides. Crystals, candles, jewelery and books– it’s almost amazing how much they fit into such a tiny cottage. It absolutely screams Mystic, Connecticut without being one iota like any other place in town.
So whether you’re a pagan, interested in paganism, or just looking for a shop that’s close to Downtown without being another clothing boutique, I recommend Mystical Horizons.
