The Cakery

So, so, very disappointed. I ordered a birthday cake for my mother. Based on the Cakery’s «Best of Omaha» award, and feedback from acquaintances, I decided to take a chance on the bakery. I ordered an 8″ round cake decorated specifically with Spring flowers, i.e. daffodils, violets, rosebuds, all executed in lovely pale spring colors. Upon cake pick –up, I was shocked. The flowers had no resemblance to actual flowers, and we’re in extremely gaudy neon and deep colors, none found in nature. The woman behind the counter was so kind, and there were absolutely no other possibilities to have an appropriate cake decorated (within the time frame allowed), I felt I had no other choice but to accept the cake. It was if the decorator had just finished decorating a children’s cake, and did not feel like mixing appropriate colors and re-​filling the icing bags. The lack of finesse and technique suggests limited skills of that particular decorator, which begs the question: who let this cake go to a patron? Management=training, anyone? I actually deliberated not giving the cake to my mother, I was so embarassed. I decided to go ahead and give it to her so she would have Something. The guests were tactful, but there was a stunned silence at the appearance of the cake. A cake should not become a social liability because of inappropriate and unprofessional décor. Buyer, beware. I am not quite sure that even if given a picture of the desired flower décor, they could execute it properly. If fondant — covered cakes or joke cakes are what you desire, this is the place. However, if you are looking for classical, professional techniques, keep searching. No one, but no one, wants to give or recieve a tacky cake.

This is my new go to place for decorated cupcakes. Prices are much more reasonable than some other shops in town ($ 1.25 per cupcake as opposed to $ 2 I have found elsewhere) and they also let you choose from a wide variety of flavors, again, as opposed to some other shops in town that limit you to white and chocolate. We had a Sesame Street theme and the cupcakes were adorable. As far as flavor, I have had better but I will definitely be working with the cakery again!
