This place is amazing. The restaurant itself is small but wow. The fried burrito is out of this world. The hashbrown casserole has so much flavor. Even the coffee is good. The owner, man, was our waiter and was great and very talkative. We will be back

We have been here several times and it’s been great. Today it was ridiculous. We were told our wait time would be 20 – 30 min and it was longer. When we sat down we ordered right away but by the time we actually got our food it was over an hour and a half later. Not to mention my meal(pancake sandwich thing) had tiny bits and pieces of bacon in it when every other time I’ve ordered it it had much more bacon. Also, my husband’s meal had hardly no sausage in it at all(he ordered it with sausage, not meatless) and there was a light-colored hair in it, which was gross. They definitely need more cooks at this place. It’s RIDICULOUS that people have to wait so long to be served– I even overheard the table beside us comment about how their food was no longer breakfast, but lunch because it took so long.

They’re so good. Had some dessert pancakes(caramel macchiato) bacon, hashbrowns, and some eggs. I was going to share the bacon with the person I was dining with, but it was too good, much like everything else. Even the coffee was enjoyable. 5 all day, great diner. I will be back for more awesome breakfast food with one of the nicest staffs I’ve ever been around. :)

This is a great little gem of a breakfast/brunch/lunch spot. The only bad thing is there’s usually a wait, but that just shows how good this place is! I usually stick with breakfast foods here and every meal has been very good. If you have some time, this place is definitely worth the wait!

We loved this place! Their hash brown casserole is so good and their breakfast burritos were awesome also! We will definitely be back many times.

Life has been busy and dining out has mostly been for dinners which Wooden Spoon does not serve. I still love the food here. And I was craving a breakfast burrito and a biscuit with gravy. When that happens I know exactly where to go! W O O D E N S P O O N! Tina was cooking and Wayne was waiting tables. It was busy and there was a short wait. No floor space is wasted, the restaurant is small and quaint, but it’s worth the wait. Sometimes, I think just pushing some of the tables together and having everybody sit family style would be a good idea. It’s so informal anyway and many of the customers know each other. Lots of people eat there as a table of one, but there are couples and families. I’m seeing more seniors and younger people, too. Bottom line… come as you are, come as a table of one or six, but come with an appetite for good quality food. Or call and place an order to go is always an option. Overland Park is a large upscale city with many restaurants. But for quality and value, I think The Wooden Spoon beats them all! It’s unique and I hope they never change it!

Great little place! The food was piping hot and delicious! We had the veggie hash brown casserole and pancakes. Great combination of flavors in the hash brown casserole and the pancakes were thick, but fluffy! The owners were super nice. It felt like we were eating at home instead of at a restaurant! Check this place out, on a weekday!

I JUST had breakfast here this morning and I had to give a review. #1. The people were SO nice. They kindly and enthusiastically came up with a special order for me, to suit my dietary restrictions. #2. That special order breakfast was out-of-this-world delicious. #3. They went over and above– I told them that I was staying in a hotel where they charge for everything– coffee, a banana, etc. — and before I left The Wooden Spoon, they handed me an apple so I would not have to pay for a snack later. We are only here for one more day, but we will be going there for breakfast again tomorrow. I am now glad that my hotel charges for everything, because I got to experience The Wooden Spoon.

We decided to try this place out for breakfast on a Saturday. We walked in and there were about 6 tables, all full, but the wait wasn’t long at all. I tried the breakfast burrito, which was just okay, it wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad either. The thing that stood out to me was their’ pico. It was good, kinda tomatoey… and not spicy which I wish it was, but it was good. I like their hashbrowns a lot, my was extra crispy just how I like it. I didn’t see it on a menu or anything but the guy next to me had a fried breakfast burrito! Next time I’m getting that. My husband had the biscuits and gravy which was pretty good as well and kids had pancakes, it was a thick pancake!

Went at lunch on a weekday, not very busy. Food is VERY good. We had a group of 5 and it took a loooong time to get our food, had to keep asking to get refills on tea. Overall — great food, but be prepared to for what amounts to slow food service.

Friendly staff, great food. I had half a philly cheese steak sandwich on wheat with fries. Fries were fantastically crisp, sandwich was awesome(though I could only finish half of my half sandwich!) He had the panwich– really tasty and perfect for dipping.

Our 1st time at this Mom & Pop shop(10 tables), we arrived happy to support, but turns out they have typical mom & pop unorganization. A 2 top was waiting before us, we arrived and sat down to wait«20 minutes». 5 – 10 minutes later a 5 top of NY Mets fans and later a 3 top arrived. As tables get up guess who gets priority. To our surprise they rewrote the list and put us at the bottom. The older man here(assuming the dad) was so rude & angry. When we came up to politely let them know there were two tops who were waiting for roughly 10 minutes before the other tops even arrived, the old man yelled«The 3&5 get first tables». Yeah right! No thank you. We wished them well in their endeavor and went on our way. ** this post is to share our experience and only our experience. It is not a recommendation. Good prices, good food, friendly owner. The place is very intimate, so if you have a large group you may want to call a head. We had the pan which, pancakes and sausage patty, scrambled eggs, single veggie hashbrown casserole. They were hits with the whole family. The veggie hashbrown cass reminded me of a healthier version of cracker barrels hashbrowns. Would definitely go back!

So, I liked this breakfast place. The food was good and the prices are SUPER reasonable. It was easy to piece together the meal I wanted from the a la carte menu, which I appreciate. The only issue I had was that the food was a little greasy. I had the single order of the breakfast burrito, for example, and the side of the tortilla that was laying on the plate was soggy. It tasted good, but mostly just made it hard to eat! I’ll definitely go back though — and I’ll keep you updated after I try a few more things! The other thing that’s tricky about this place is that the seating is really limited. It’s a small space, so it’s not their fault, but sitting by the door could be too cold in the winter. Plus when you go up to the register to pay, you have to stand right behind someone while you’re waiting. Kind of awkward but not much they can do to change it.

The Mexi-Cheesesteak is fantastic. I accidentally ordered a double instead of a single but am honestly very happy about it because I can have more later. The fries and dipping sauce are a must. Staff is very very friendly! Will definitely return(and very soon) Highly recommend!

A very overdue shout out to this little place! I met a friend there for breakfast after reading other reviews. I drove from Lees Summit & wasn’t disappointed. A unique menu, executed well. We got a chance to visit with one of the owners & he’s a hoot! Also enjoyed getting to meet his wife, the brains behind the great food. I’ll be back.

Very good! It’s small so if you come a lunch, you may have to wait for a seat. I had the fried stuffed breakfast burrito and my daughter had the caramel macchiato pancakes. It’s the food you will have dreams about! LOVE mom and pop places, and that is exactly what you get here. Great and comfortable environment.

A coworker and I talked about coming here the last few months and finally made it in today. There’s patio seating in front of the restaurant and 8 tables inside. I expected a bigger dining room. Plainly decorated, 50’s &60’s music, and a neighborhood diner/deli feel. Breakfast and lunch served until 2pm. The menu offers about 7 main breakfast items and 5 lunch sandwiches. This isn’t really all that limiting with sides and combinations. I ordered a 3 egg omelet which comes with your choice of 3 toppings, cheese is extra. It included toast. I added sausage patties. Omg. The sausage took my back to my grandma’s kitchen! A simple omelet packed with flavor. My coworker got hashbrown casserole with pancakes. I tried the casserole and I agreed when she said it’s like a twice baked potato… so yummy! Her pancakes were light and fluffy. She says delicious! Friendly and clean. We’ll be back.

The situation at the restaurant started off awkwardly with a sign on the door saying that it was«impromptu Sunday» which I later figured out meant that they weren’t normally open on Sunday(despite what Unilocal said at the time). The awkwardness continued when I walked to the counter and the gentleman there just looked at me. I opened the conversation by explaining that it was our first time there and asking if we ordered at the counter and then found a seat. He replied«no.» Then I asked if we should tell him that there were 4 in our party and that we were looking for a table. He said«yes.» So then I had to say«there are 4 in our party and we are looking for a table. I realize he was probably just having fun, but it put things off to a bad start. Out visit was based on some good Unilocal reviews and I should have looked further for recommendations on what to eat. Three of us had biscuits and gravy and one had the«panwich»(a breakfast sandwich made with a pancake and then cut into wedges with syrup for dipping.) We were all disappointed with the food. Extremely. I rarely add salt to my food. I started with pepper and then went for the salt. It helped a bit, but not much. The good news is that the prices were low, but I still didn’t think it was worth it.

My wife and I discovered The Wooden Spoon several weeks ago, and immediately we were hooked! In my opinion, the owners of The Wooden Spoon have figured out the perfect business model… great people, great service, incredible food… end of story! Those are the reasons we’ve been back almost weekly ever since, and not once have we been disappointed. The place itself is tucked away in a little strip of shops just across the street from Johnson County Community College, so it’s really easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for as you drive by. The inside of the restaurant is small and simple, with very little décor to speak of. This would usually be a negative in my book, but at The Wooden Spoon it doesn’t seem to matter because the people are what give this place its amazing atmosphere and character. The restaurant is owned and operated by an incredible family, and they do a great job of making it feel as if you’re a guest in their own home when you dine there. The wife is the chef and is responsible for the incredible breakfasts and lunches that are served throughout the day. The husband, on the other hand, runs the dining room and greatly adds to the overall experience with his outgoing personality and humor. Sometimes you’ll even have the pleasure of being served by one of the their children. Regardless of who you meet when you’re there, it’s obvious that The Wooden Spoon is a labor of love for the entire family, and for those of us who have become regulars, it’s really great to return and feel like you’re catching up with old friends over a home-cooked meal. And that’s what sets The Wooden Spoon apart from most other area restaurants, in my opinion. As for the food itself, I’m convinced that there’s not a bad item on the menu, but my personal favorites for breakfast include the Deep-Fried Breakfast Burrito, the Breakfast Sandwich, and the Hash Brown Casserole. And for lunch, I highly recommend the Mexi-Cheesesteak… it’s delicious! Can’t wait to come back and explore even more of the menu!
