I usually go here a few times a year and overall I’ve been pretty satisfied. I’ve never been disappointed in the quality of the food nor the behavior of the staff. It is a bit on the pricey side but overall worth it, especially if you’re feeling like sushi but you’re too lazy to leave the hill. The salmon meatballs are amazing btw.

Judging by all the high marks, the locals are either trying to help the local businesses or they have no idea what sushi is supposed to taste like. Sushi was terrible. The rice was hard and old. The uni tasted fishy. The yellowtail belly was rubber and the toro did not taste fresh. These items were way overpriced.(The price would have been ok if the sushi was quality.) The crunch roll was also bad. The mexican roll could have been decent had the rice not been hard.

What you guys would call a hidden gem, I would call Black Bamboo Sushi one of the best sushi spots around my hometown area that you can find. The location is embedded within a residential area and high school area that is tucked away in the Lunada Bay area. It shouldn’t be too difficult to find, and there’s just enough parking that it won’t be a problem finding at all. Depending on what time you arrive, this place can either be very crowded or mildly busy. Their menu is pretty extensive for a sushi restaurant, so you won’t run out of options here. I tend to choose a variety of their specialty handcrafted rolls and I generally come back to try different things. I definitely think most first-time sushi eaters would love this place because of the variety and options that they serve. It’s not just sushi, but hot plates, combination dishes, and various grilled and raw starters. The service is fine, but it definitely isn’t the highlight of the restaurant. I would definitely recommend trying it if you’re in the area and craving some sushi.

Having lived in Palos Verdes for 17 years we thought it was time to try this sushi bar. My sister, being vegetarian, asked if they could make a vegetable tempura roll. While there wasn’t a vegetarian tempura roll on the menu, usually sushi restaurants don’t have a problem with this request. The waitress said since it wasn’t on the menu they wouldn’t do it and she refused to even ask the sushi chef and my sister was forced to chose one of the only vegetarian items on he menu(which was just okay). When we went to pay we found out they didn’t take American Express cards(which wasn’t posted anywhere) and we had to go to the car to get alternate payment. When we did finally pay, the waitress accidently charged my card the wrong amount and was weird about giving me a receipt for the incorrect charge. Then, I accidently signed the customer copy of my receipt and the waitress chased me outside and knocked on my car window to correct the mistake. While the sushi was okay, the service was not and I don’t think we would be returning to this restaurant.

My first experience here was a great one… my second, disgusted. Decided to go here for dinner with my wife on one of the few date nights we get. Called around 7 for reservations at the sushi bar and the lady on the phone said, yes please come around 730 – 745 and there should be room at the bar. No problem, right? We roll in at 735 and just as expected, 2 seats are open at the bar right in time for us. As the hostess was about to seat us, her older manager came and interrupted her to speak to her in Japanese. After an awkward minute, the lady turns around and with no apologies says, «you will have to wait longer.» Apparently some other Japanese lady sitting on the opposite side of the bar, on her cell phone(rude), was waiting for that spot and her guest to arrive. Last I checked, you don’t get to take seats at the sushi bar, waiting for your guest to show up. Everyone in your party has to be there to get seated. As all this is happening, I lock eyes with the owner/chef behind the bar, thinking he would make something work. Nope, he just looks straight down immediately, like a coward, and ignores the situation. So we wait for another 5 minutes, standing in a small room and watch this lady sit there without her guest and talk on her cell phone. I want to believe it wasn’t a racist thing but damn did it feel that way. Who seats 1 person waiting for someone to show up vs seating 2 guest that are standing right there and have a reservation? The energy in this place is very poor and made me so sick we decided to turn around and walk out. You just lost a customer for life. Bad business, bad energy comes back to you 10 fold. Good luck.

Great local sushi restaurant in Lunada Bay. Jason, the owner, serves fresh fish and keeps a very tidy restaurant. One thing that is really nice is they bring you a free speciality item. We tried salmon meatballs which were really yummy! The place holds about 20 people max, so it is very quaint. It’s worth a try if you are in the area.

Sushi quality was good but service was less than favorable. Our party arrived about 45 minutes before close. They had two tables which they refused to push together even though there was room. We waited 20 minutes were finally sat. 5 minutes after sitting down we were told it was last call. We quickly ordered and one person in our party never even got his food, for this they did nothing. Did not comp anything or offer dessert, simply said sorry with their closed down kitchen. The two tables that were vacant when we arrived, stayed vacant until closing. Won’t ever be back.

This place is nothing to squawk at. The chefs knew everyone walking in the door and the food melted in your mouth. we ordered the Ultimate Jim, Bubba Gump, and Hawaiian rolls. They were amazing. I thought about ordering miso as I love that but I was so intrigued by the rolls I passed. I have to say though the service was a bit hit and miss. She was all over us in beginning and then gone after we ordered. Each roll came with a thin layer of red onion on top which added an amazing element to them… nice and refreshing… then the tuna, shrimp, unagi, and crab we so fresh and delightful.

WOW! Some awfully enthusiastic people who seemed to not know the first thing about sushi, Japanese food or anything that resembles Asian cuisine. Dropped in here recently visiting family in the area and we had low expectations. Captive audience given the location and we got the food of a captive audience. Was the food horrible? No. Was the food just barely, on the right side of, edible? Yes. The sushi rolls were DECENTATBEST. I have had superior sushi at Whole Foods. It was not terrible, I would try it again, but it was far from anything good or great or even 3 stars. The bulgogi and chicken teriyaki? Bordering on Pei Wei or PF Chang’s quality. Actually, I have had much better quality meat at PF Chang’s. I don’t want to damage a local, family owned restaurant… but I have news for the residents of PVE: what you are being served is barely edible and OVERPRICED. I would suggest you start voicing these concerns because Black Bamboo could be a whole lot better for what you are being charged. A solid 2 stars. Nothing more. I am sorry. PS When an establishment has so many RAVING5 star reviews, they are clearly, fake, planted or paid for. No one in their right mind would give this place 5 stars… let alone 4.

There are a few sushi options in Palos Verdes, this is one of the better. It’s small in size, but big in quality. :) Came on a Friday night and it was not too busy at 7pm. The key to good sushi is freshness, and this place has it. They specialize in fusion sushi rolls, my favorite roll was the fire cracker roll. The tuna poke was another favorite of mine, zesty. My daughter and I had some tuna sashimi(big slices) and it just melted in our mouths. Great quality, and I highly recommend anyone who loves sushi to give it a try.

I ate here once with a party of three. We ended up spending $ 120 — $ 40 per person. It’s not terrible considering the price of sushi, but the quality we received could have been better. I usually go to Kuma Sushi in Carson just because I can get more bang from my buck and their quality is actually better. But I digress… The service was fine. The atmosphere was fine. The sushi was alright. I don’t know — nothing super fancy about this place. I don’t think I’m going to eat here again… not because it’s bad, but because it wasn’t great. It’s too expensive for simply being«OK».

Hidden treasure box in the midst of dark PV road! I have eaten Sushi everwhere but I’d have to say this place has been the best! The place is small but cozy. It is immaculate and the chef is friendly and funny. Oysters– i hate oysters but the oysters here are so fresh! 2. Uni-a must! Fresh! 3. Yellow tail, tuna, fatty tuna, rolls of sorts, sashimis, salmon, and name of ones i have never heard of… yummmm!!! 4. Warm clam miso soup Its fresh, not fishy, flavorful.

The only problem with this place is you will have trouble enjoying Sushi anywhere else you go. Nothing I’ve tried has beat the freshness and quality of their sushi. Their rolls are also larger than other sushi restaurants. I recommend the Sunrise Roll

3.75 stars. Tasty rolls: Delight roll and Ultimate Jim roll. . Didn’t try the sashimi yet cuz I’m getting full and it’s expensive. 2 pieces for $ 6. Great ocean view right next door.

Had a private party here. Service was awesome and food was amazing! The salmon meatballs were soooooo good. Crispy on the outside and savory goodness in the middle. The tuna poke was also on point! The best part is that they have karaōke!!! Perfect place to have an intimate party. Definitely coming back. Thank you black bamboo for a great and memorable party!

Came here for my Grandmas birthday and everything was fresh! Great quality, very tasty, clean, and very good service. My favorite roll was the fire cracker roll! I would have to say that is one of the best tasting roll I have ever tasted. The tuna poke was another favorite of mine. Whatever roll or sashimi you order they will be fresh. I had some tuna sashimi and it just melted in my mouth. Great quality and I highly recommend anyone who loves sushi to give it a try. Must try the Green Tea ice cream for dessert!

I happened upon this place after our meeting with a client who lived in the area. My partner and I decided to grab a bite before heading our separate ways as well as debrief from our meeting. The place is quaint and as others have commented, is most likely Korean-owned since the«Bulgogi» item on the menu was a slight giveaway, hehe. There are a few tables and chairs in the small and cozy dining area as well as a sushi bar towards the back. They had a nice selection of traditional Japanese dishes on the menu. I ordered a hot green tea to refresh myself but found it a little on the weak side. I think they needed to replace the tea leaves and serve a fresher batch. My partner ordered the Fusion Spring Roll which looked really appetizing. He said it was quite good. I, myself, trying to stay off carbs, decided to order the sashimi salad. I was expecting a small plate with a few pieces of fish but was mildly surprised at the generous mixture of fish and greens on the dish that was served to me. I enjoyed eating all the different cuts of raw fish and the vinaigrette was mildly tangy. I would definitely order this plate again. Albeit, the fish wasn’t the freshest but it was good nonetheless. If you’re looking for a decent sushi restaurant on this side of the hill or just want to venture somewhere off the beaten path, I think this would be a nice option.
