Great variety of rolls and food. A little too crowded in between seatings. Food is good and enjoyable with a glass of red wine to clean your palate after each plate…

This was my first time going to Kurai after recommendations from my students to try it. It is an all you can eat buffet for 12.99 dinner with a large selection of sushi and small selection of dishes. I enjoyed all the sushi I tried, preferring anything with shrimp or crab. The sushi were fresh, and I enjoyed the selection I ate. Although the food had less selection than one of the large China buffets, it was also tasty. I had the orange, teriyaki, and general tso chicken, fried rice, and lo mein. Also had the hot and sour soup which was made the way it should be without a beef flavor base or meat in it. Everyone was friendly, we had great service, and they worked hard at keeping the buffet and sauce area clean. Food could have been warmer, sushi was at room temp like most buffets, and I would go back again. Three stars for need of warmer food and more food selection, but everything taste good.

What’s the stigma when you first hear«sushi buffet»? The sushi must not be good, the raw fish is not that fresh right? Well, I wouldn’t say this place has great sushi, because they don’t. However, for $ 10/lunch buffet, it’s pretty damn good. The key when you go to a sushi buffet is, not everything is good. Keep that in mind. They have a good selection of about 15 – 20 different sushi to choose from. The best way to do it? Get 2 of each, then put aside the pieces that you really like, take pics, so next time u know which ones to stick to and don’t over eat lol. Besides the sushi, they also have a few good selections for chinese food. The chicken teriyaki is on point. The miso soup is a hit and miss. It has been super salty and not as hot once or twice, but for the most part it has been decent. Don’t even think about the dessert. You’d be super disappointed. The only decent thing they have for dessert is ice cream, n only in 2 favors, vanilla and napoleon. I would have given this place 3 stars, however, I like their unique decorations, and the 10% military discount have earned them an extra star.

If you want WARM sushi, this is your place. It is pre rolled, put on a tray and placed under lights. I have eaten gas station sushi but this was below those standards. save your money.

Good is alright for the price you pay and the service is good. The decoration is cute as well. I do see flies flying around last time so that was gross.

The food is great and the sushi buffet is definitely a bonus. Unfortunately, the service is very poor. When we arrived we were sat but we never got served I had to get up and find a waitress and ask her if we could get some drinks and utensils. We also never received a check so I had to again describe to the cashier where we sat before I could pay. After paying I didn’t receive a receipt I had ask for one which I thought was odd. The price is ridiculous, $ 13 dollars for a small buffet. I don’t plan on visiting again.

Totally cheap… The meal tasted like a meal of bad leftovers. If you enjoy Guetto meals. This is the place for you. Even the ice tea was lame. It tasted like they got the water through a dirty water hose. Your are better off stopping at a Sonic in the HOOD to get a better meal…

Hostess was polite, poor English. Wide sushi variety, small variety of actual food. Felt extremely sick afterwards even though I ate a small portion.

Best sushi and Chinese food buffet, ever! Owner is a nice lady who from what I can tell every time I go, is concerned about her business and its success.

So imagine going to any other buffet place that has a sushi section. Now imagine that section as a whole restaurant, add in some mosquitoes, grease, hair and an overabundance of cream cheese and you’ll get Kurai. Environment: This is the only reason why it got a star. The place looks nice. The ceiling bamboo decorations are stellar. Food: HORRIBLE DISGUSTING GROSS UNAPPETIZING It honestly looks like the«chefs» of this place just bought some expired fish, added a ton of cream cheese, rolled them up in rice and called it sushi. The sauce table is amazingly disgusting. It looks like it hasn’t been cleaned since the place opened. Also they were all watery and all tasted the same, yum. OH the hair on the sushi, was awesome! Customer service: The manager was playing on his phone the whole time. The servers are just walking around aimlessly and/or hiding. I basically just refiled my own drinks. Im surprised noone has ended up in the hospital from the food here.

Never go on Sundays! It’s too crowded. There’s a lack of employees since you have to wait for everything: getting a table, clean plates, sushi rolls, ice, the check… And it’s also very loud with children everywhere! Food is average. You get what you pay for. The place looks clean also and the decoration is very original.

Pretty nice selection of sushi. Chinese food is good. For a buffet setup this place can hit the craving for Chinese and sushi. Great décor and pretty clean. Got plenty of refills. Will definitely be back again.

While they do have a large selection of rolls for when you have a sushi craving, it seems that«Kurai» means«cream cheese» in Japanese. Of the 16 – 20 rolls on the buffet, 3 – 5 of them didn’t have either a glob of cream cheese inside of them or a thick layer smothered on top to hold the toppings in place. After a few bites, it leaves a heavy coating in your mouth. There is also a limited selection of the types of seafood in the rolls, most everything has either imitation crab or salmon. The dinner was only $ 12.99 so it’s not a huge loss but sushi isn’t something you want to go bargain pricing on. I feel there are more authentic and quality choices for sushi around McAllen.

This is an excellent sushi buffet. They have a vast variety of sushi rolls. I’ve tried almost all of them and the ones I tastes were delish. They have these fried jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese that are bundles of joy. Today I also served myself their sweet and sour soup which is very flavorful. They have a few«Asian» style dishes like broccoli beef, jalapeño chicken, egg rolls, etc. Buffet price during lunch is 9.99, can’t beat that price.

This place has a serious flies problem, take a look at my picture. Food is okay and so is price, it just makes me uncomfortable seeing so many flies on top of food. Just know this is not a fancy place and you will average 15 dlls a person for«okay» food.

I really like this place. Eat here every time in McAllen. I’ve done more extensive review on the page for their other location. Go read those.

best thing about this place is the Décor. Modern Japanese and sleek. If you are craving for sushi AND chinese then this can help the craving. Good? well… its okay for being a buffet category setup. Only thing i notice is everything is so nice from tables, décor, ambiance, but they serve your drinks in foam cups… would i come back? maybe
