I asked for a trim and left with 4 – 5 inches cut off. My hair hasn’t been this short in over 10 years. He wanted to blow dry it but I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. He wasn’t even paying attention to what he was doing because he was too busy talking to other customers. Not to mention he missed a chunk that I had to cut myself back home. Terrible experience, please think twice before coming here

Disrespectful and rude. I did not know this place was cash only. So when I had to pay I went across the street to an atm. I paid the man and tipped generously. Little did I know they have memory loss over there because the next thing I know I was receiving harassing phone calls to pay for a haircut I tipped generously on. The subsequent phone conversations did not end well, needless to say. Word to wise, get a receipt for any transaction at this barber shop because they are rude and suffer from memory loss

Even without the student discount I would choose to come back to him. Great haircut and such a happy to place to go, always an enjoyable conversation during the cut

This guy is a racist and an anti-Semite. He kept going on and on about the«Jews» while he was cutting my hair. Go somewhere else.

I called earlier to set up an appointment for this Friday morning. The owner answered the phone, and informed me about the student discount(which according to Unilocal includes a wash and cut). He told me to wash my hair the night before coming in so he could simply wet and cut my hair. This was already a red flag for me, but I decided to continue setting up the appointment, and request a wash when I came in for my cut. As I tried informing the owner about my hair(thickness, length, etc) he told me he was busy and hung up. EVEN if I was taking up too much of his time, there was no reason for his behavior and lack of politeness. I called back and cancelled my appointment. I would definitely recommend spending your time and money somewhere were stylists actually show some decency to their clients.

Really glad I paid a visit to Anthony Thomas. Anthony was professional but down to earth. The studio atmosphere was also very welcoming. Showed my Student ID and got a discount and a great haircut!

I’m a student, and I was very happy to find a cheap place with good reviews in Center City. Well, you get what you pay for: shampoo but no conditioner, a sloppy five-minute cut(I’m considering going elsewhere tomorrow to have it fixed) and no style. Also tiny hairs all over my clothes, something that should never happen at a good salon. When my hair died, some asymmetries became apparent. All in all, abysmal. Only reason I’m giving two stars is because they were pleasant. Terrible job in all other respects.

They were able to take in as a walk in on busy days and did a great job. Really happy with my cut :)

DONOTGOHERE. he needs to retire because his work is choppy and uneven. He screwed up my roommates bangs HORRIBLY. It looked like a two year old cut it. She eventually got it fixed at a real salon. He also gave me a very blunt choppy hair trim. There’s a big uneven chunk in the front. The layers look awful. I told him to not cut bluntly. Well he did. I used to trim my own hair and I will go back to doing my own it’s much better! He is not professional at all. All he does is blab with his family and friends who are hanging in the shop, and last time I was there they all seemed extremely racist. Pay for a good haircut and pleasant experience. You won’t regret it.

Was able to fit me in within 20 minutes on a really busy day as a walk-in. Did an amazing job cutting /styling my hair with cutters — I received complements for almost two weeks afterwards. Can’t beat the price — especially in Philly. Will definitely be going back.

The only place where I get a great haircut in this city for a great price! After being recommended to his studio 2 years ago, I’ve became a regular with my monthly visits. Thomas knows how to make every guest feel comfortable and definitely know how to cut hair to how you want it! Definitely recommend his studio!

I spent $ 60 at another salon in this area getting a haircut the other month and while, I didn’t hate what they did, I didn’t like it enough to have felt OK paying $ 60 for it! But I was convinced that you had to pay that kind of money to keep your hair from being butchered. Nonetheless, I thought I’d give Thomas Anthony’s hair studio a shot and I am SO very glad that I did. My haircut was *great* and it was done so quickly and efficiently. They gave me an appointment within 2 hours of my calling on a busy Saturday morning. The student rate is *such* a boon. I’m never going anywhere else…

For me, Thomas Anthony’s is very convenient. I work down the street and can get in at the last minute. Anthony is a great guy. He’s very funny and always has great conversation. The price isn’t too bad. I pay $ 35 to get my pixie cut trimmed and cleaned up. There isn’t really anything else to say. I don’t think they are awful but I also don’t think they’re great.

I didn’t listen to my friends when they said not to come here. I just wanted to cut the split ends off, and paying $ 15(the student price for a woman’s cut) + tip for a quick, simple trim sounded totally reasonable. I should have walked out after my shampoo because the guy doing it acted like he was scared of hair. it was bizarre. Now, I would imagine that shampooing peoples’ hair all day isn’t a glamorous job, and some people must have some nasty(read: oily and dandruff-y) hair. But I take pretty good care of my head, he could have used a little more force instead of merely hovering his fingers around my general hair area. He also wasn’t very careful, as water was trickling down the sides of my face and down my back and shirt. So anyway, I didn’t listen to my gut and instead went to sit down in Anthony’s chair where he proceeded to more or less butcher my cut. When he was done, he sat me under a dryer instead of blowing it out himself, so the drying was uneven when I left(dry on top and still wet on the bottom). I didn’t notice until I got home how uneven the cut itself was; there were random bits of long strands and even an entire CHUNK of hair that was a good inch longer than the rest of the hairs on my head. The right side was also longer than the left. It looked like someone had tied my hair into two ponytails, and then just cut right across, because the cut was very blunt. Ultimately my attempt to save time and money failed, as I had to go to another salon and get it fixed(where the stylist there had to take off an inch and a half to even out the cut, and even commented on how strange it was that there were so many long strands everywhere). One star for the price(which I guess is an upside if you get a good stylist and leave with a decent cut), and one price for the service. I have to admit, even though he reeked of stale cigarettes, he was very friendly and welcoming. Even so, I won’t be back.

Anthony did a great job on my hair… he’s an extremely nice guy who will give you exactly what you want. He’s been in that location for 30 years, and he definitely knows what he’s doing. Student prices are amazing — $ 15 for a women’s haircut, $ 13 for men’s(cash only on student cuts). My boyfriend got his hair cut there and they did a great job. I was hesitant to go at first, but they do a great job on women’s hair too! Definitely not a place to go if you want lush treatment, but it’s a good cut for a great price. Highly recommended!

Craig’s review: The student discount($ 13 for men) makes this place worth going back to, but it wouldn’t be worth their regular price of $ 25. No frills and no money is wasted on décor which is fine by me. My biggest complaint is that if you’ve been once the owner makes you go back to the same barber/stylist next time you go. This would be fine but I wasn’t a big fan of the lady I saw the first time. I’ve even asked to see someone else, and the owner said, «sorry this is our policy to be fair to the stylist.» Once I called and made an appointment 15 minutes before walking over and then had to wait 30 minutes even though the two other barbers were free since I had to see the same lady who take care of me on my first visit.

Cheap, quality haircuts. I’ve been going here the last few months. I haven’t needed to make an appointment. Anthony’s cut my hair the last few times. A good guy, but it was a little gesture today that prompted me to write this Unilocal review: As Anthony cut my hair, I remarked that the water had been cut off in my building.(A pipe had split and they were having some trouble splitting it.) In fact, I had just come back from a less-than-refreshing shower at the gym. After he finished, Anthony insisted that I get a free wash and shampoo, so that I didn’t have to walk around all day with ‘loose trimmings’. Just a small gesture, but I was really, really impressed.

Great little place. It’s incredibly affordable for Center City, friendly people, student discounts… great people, good cuts. Enough said. Had my cut by Ronny. Gave 3 stars because it is a little on the expensive side…

Barbara has been cutting my hair since 1997. After I moved to Fairmount, I tried a couple of nearby barbers, because I didn’t want to drag my ass back down to 11th and Locust. Nope. It didn’t work out. Barbara is better. I kept going back. Then I moved to West Philadelphia. This time I knew better. I didn’t bother trying any nearby barbers. I still drag my ass back to 11th and Locust. Because Barbara is better. As far as I’m concerned, Barbara is going to keep cutting my hair until one of us dies. Update August 2015: Barbara, I wish you peace and joy in a better place.
