Date: 10÷7÷2015 Time: 1:10PM68° Sunny Our group’s trip included a BBQ lunch at Pie House Restaurant after touring the Larsen Family Museum and Bill’s Apples & Felice’s Dolls. The BBQ lunch consisted of ¼ of a chicken with macaroni salad, dinner roll and apple pie a la mode for dessert. The food was okay… nothing to write home about. My chicken needed some BBQ sauce because it was slightly dry. The lady next to me said the chicken needed hot sauce instead.(2.5 stars) The only redeeming factor was the slice of warm apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.(3.5 stars) One of the waitresses was not nice at all. A few of us at the table asked for napkins. Instead of handing them to us, she threw them down at the gentleman sitting next to my husband. Two napkins landed on the plate of food. I felt her gesture bordered on rudeness.((1 star) However, despite the rudeness of one employee, it did not stop me from ordering a whole baked apple pie for $ 15.00 to take home. At least the lady assisting me with the pie order was courteous.(3 stars). Rating average: 2.5 stars, round up to 3 stars, which is better than rounding it down to 2 stars.

Against my better judgement– based on previous experiences– I thought I’d try it again for lunch. My girlfriend had the grilled cheese sandwich– made on a hamburger bun and over cooked! I had the turkey sandwich, which was pre– packaged and rather cold with no condiments. I had a slice of apple pie ala mode– the only thing worth buying there– warm, flaky crust and delicious. Better brand of ice cream could be used, however. Atmosphere was as before– loud, with lots of people moving about utter confusion as they jockeyed for a seat, thus afforded difficult conversation. Food services was delivered by a hand held mini bull horn and was hard to hear. Spend a little extra money and have a PA system installed. Better yet, take out the picnic tables, install traditional seating and bring in servers to take your order. Parents, please control your children. This is not a playground for feel and touch activities.

There are plenty of other food options at High Hill Ranch and I would recommend that the Pie House Restaurant, for anything other than pie, be low on your list. The menu includes hamburger/cheeseburger(the sign says they only cook ‘em well done), grilled cheese, turkey and cheese, chili, hot dogs/polish dogs, nachos and pies. It is $ 11.45 for a burger combo meal so you are paying a premium. I got a burger and the Mrs. Got the chili cheese nachos. Both the bun and chips were stale. The beef was low quality and the fries were cold and limp. The people are friendly and that is a plus. Also, the line was out the door with customers. Needless to say they are printing money and won’t be changing the food anytime soon. High Hill Ranch is definitely the best place to stop at Apple Hill but I would choose other options for lunch when you are there.
