Schafer’s

You can’t beat this view on a sunny day. We were served delicious fish tacos by a tall guy named Mike. He was a spot on server. Crunchy fish, tasty slaw and some great aioli type sauce to boot. We then moved to the bar and Jackie is great. Our drinks were perfect. Love this place and the excellent service that we had from these two. Can’t wait to go back!

Went here on a Saturday night with Mrs. Sylvester. The place is pretty large. Has a nice outside deck on the roof. Great view of Port Jeff harbor to watch the sunset. When it gets windy, they can move the retractable roof over the dining area and close some of the windows. All ages seen there.
Food was good (had a burger $ 14. and the Mrs. had fish tacos). The Mrs. says the mixed drinks are good (not overly pricey– under $ 10.). Service was not too good as it was just too slow, even though it was not overly crowded. Seems like they need more staff. Waited 15 minutes for a table, which is OK, but an hour for fish tacos and a burger? That’s crazy– it’s not like we asked them to fish them out of the harbor!
Now for the important stuff. Trying to find your way upstairs is odd– you have to go into the restaurant to go outside and then up the stairs. They should give you a GPS when you walk in the door to find your way around. Roof top dining offers a nice view of the Port Jeff ferrry, just in case your date isn’t going well you can time it just right to high tail it out of there to catch the ferry. There was live music on the main level, which is helpful if your date is annoying to listen to. The closer you are to the band, the less of your date you hear.
Had it not been for the slow service, I would have added another star. As you have to pay for parking in Port Jeff for most of the year, time is money.

Amazing service. went on Saturday night and was seated right away, right where I requested.(window seat in the front room) .friendly staff from the hostess to the bus girl.
Our server helped us out with Gluten Free options for my son, and the fish tacos my wife ordered were outstanding. Server (not sure what his name was) was knowledgeable and helped us to get out quick because we had the ferry to catch. top to bottom a great place to eat in Pt Jeff!

My husband and I had a great meal but the service sucked. I will go back to eat without a doubt but I would not want Rebecca as my waitress again or better yet the blonde stuck up hostess should learn to do her job properly. You don’t give a server tables upstairs as well as one downstairs because I am sure Rebecca would of been great due to what we seen of her. At least she didn’t come up with some lame ass service that should of not happened do to Blondie was to stuck up to do her job right… Well I was trying to make another review but for some reason it won’t let me it will only let me update on my first review. So this is my second one I went there again my husband and I and we brought a couple with us the food was OK this time. After being here for the second time I can see that the food would not be consistent the couple that we brought the husband is a picky eater but was able to find something that he could enjoy which happened to be a New York steak how can you possibly mess up a New York steak well when the grizzle is running throughout the whole entire steak and you can’t even get a decent piece off that is how it can get really he lost his appetite I was trying to see about getting him something else that was on the menu but you can’t blame him he lost his appetite so yes I called our server over that should’ve paid more attention to us but I told him the situation and they did take it off the bill. I think whoever the owner is of this place they need to wake up they got a gold mine they charge an arm and a leg for things that should be a little bit less money but the area that they are in is a gold mine so whoever owns this dig a little deeper into your pocket fix your tables so your customers don’t have to fix them so they don’t get knocked over as well as get your servers where they’re serving properly. When our server finally came to our table he didn’t even introduce himself I had to ask if there was any specials he told us of a special and we were waiting for more but there was no other specials and it was like he was dumbfounded I don’t know get with the program you want to make a little bit more money that you don’t want to put into your restaurant well get it to run right and you’ll be able to be more stingy with your money. I don’t think I will be going back here ever again.

had low expectations, but dinner was kind of terrible all around. it took almost an hour to get three very simple entrees. when they finally came, one of the orders was wrong. food quality was passable; however would avoid the ceviche if you have any respect whatsoever for the dish.

We had lunch recently and were very disappointed-​Our wait was almost an hour-​the waiter never came to our table to explain the delay-​we never got a bread basket-​the food was just ok and the prices were high for a lunch menu-​the only good thing is the view

Where do I start? The look and feel was alright at most the service was good but that was it, the food was straight garbage soggy, messy and not flavorful also the drinks were so watered down it. What a waste of time and money stay away

First and last time we will ever visit this restaurant. We were four people this past Saturday evening. After being seated, and waiting over 15 minutes, we had to flag down a waiter. We first ordered drinks which came with the incorrect wine. The waiter tasted the wine out of my wife’s glass and agreed it was not pinot grigio. It then took another 15 minutes to get the correct wine.
We then ordered steamers as an appetizer for the table which again took an inordinate amount of time. The steamers came cold and half of them had nothing inside them (and nothing was on the bottom of the pot). The main courses were mediocre at best.
My overall assessment is zero stars but I believe I cannot do that on Unilocal

We went in on the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend around 6:30 in an attempt to grab a quick drink outside/​upstairs before heading to a dinner reservation elsewhere in the village. After sitting at the bar upstairs (which was nearly full) for about 10 – 15 minutes a waiter passing by said that there would be no bartender until 7. Somehow we were able to order drinks from one of the waitstaff, and on the second try we finally got the right drinks (not blaming the waitress, she’s not a bartender). At 7 the poor bartender arrived to a full bar, a register without any change in it (which made paying our tab difficult), no ice, and nothing ready for her. I feel bad for the waitstaff and bar staff here. I wish I could give more stars, because the environment was great, and I’m sure the bartender would have been wonderful had she been there the whole time, but management really needs to get their scheduling together. On a beautiful night before a long holiday weekend, I think an outdoor waterfront bar should be staffed.

Baked clams were on par for any normal restaurant. But your in seafood country why are they soggy. The atmosphere is delightful with the windows open on the upper deck. But the one downers there was the staff. They were openly complained that their tips were taken from them and how everybody else that works there sucks. It only took that bartender 10 minutes of me trying to get her attention before she served offered me a drink.

People usually say to go Billies, Tommys, then Schafers. I advise you to just go Billies, Tommys, and then home. You will not have a good time.

My wife and I visited Schafer’s last Saturday afternoon around 1pm to enjoy the weather on the top outdoor deck. We sat at the bar and watched and heard the bartender berate and belittle his co-​workers. His name was Kevin M. We had to say something after this happened a number of times in the hour we were there, and we did.
Dear Kevin, your attitude and behavior to your colleagues was unprofessional and disgusting, and to behave that way in front of customers was further unprofessional.
Karma is a bitch.
I hope management sees this and reprimands you, although you should be fired.

How you not going to let me in for wearing boots when girls were allowed in with boots just before me… also the bouncer let 15 people cut the line. Highly would not recommend this place.

Ok place for sitting at the bar upstairs and having a drink. The food is ok. Nothing worth wild. Great view on a nice day!

Overpriced because it is on the water. The food was over salted. We went on a Thursday night and there were dirty tables every where. I had to ask for the price-​fix menu they advertised online. We were not impressed. They had run out of the ONLY vegetarian entrée on the entire menu.

The drinks, appetizers were good. It’s bar food that was decent, went during off peak season (April). We enjoyed our food. We had burgers & fries.

Came back to my «Go-​To» favorite spot in the village of Port Jeff… Schafer’s. Stopped in for a quick appetizer along with a glass of red wine and ended up getting the Filet Mignon with Whipped Potatoes and Sautéed Broccoli. It was to die for. I will be coming back to get it again. The menu has changed and it definitely has something for everyone. The chef in the kitchen cooked my filet to perfection and it melted in your mouth. Bartenders were super friendly and the waitress was very attentive to my needs and super nice. Both managers also came over and checked on my meal. Overall 5 stars from start to finish. I cannot wait to come back and try the grilled tuna and the skirt steak.

We had our rehearsal dinner here and let me tell you: I highly recommend it! Jackie helped with the planning, and couldn’t possibly be anymore accommodating, helpful and friendly. The staff was so great & the service was wonderful (there were about 35 of us.) The menu accommodated everyone’s needs and tasted great!
Also, two years ago my family throw me a surprise 30^th there. And just as it was with the rehearsal dinner, the birthday party was seamless and a blast. (We had about 55 – 70 people there).
This restaurant accommodates different size parties and you always feel like yours is the priority!
On a sidenote: the burger may be one of the greatest burgers my husband and I have ever had.

I simply thought it was fantastic!
My family and some other came as a party of 6 and we were seated right away, no wait at all! There was some sort of auction or raffle going on in the other room but that didn’t bother is because it was very separated and our seating was in an enclosed room with a gorgeous view.
When we first sat down I noticed the attentive staff. The hostess sat us, our server came in a greeted us & a different server was pouring out water. Nice touch! Wine menu already on the table so I skimmed through and they have a fair selection to choose from.
After drinks were out of the way I opened the dinner menu and was happily surprised to see some classic choices. Sometimes nicer places like this go too far with their selections. Pumpkin cured veal? I don’t think so lol! So Schaefer’s knew what was up! They had a very nautical list which is extremely appropriate in my opinion seeing as they are a waterside restaurant.
We all places our orders and while we were waiting our served came caressing through the doors like some archangel carrying the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. Cheesy bread. Holly cow! This bread was to die for! A blend of gooey mozzarella, scallions and some spices in such warm fluffy table bread of some sort. We actually ordered 2 baskets it was just so good.
The food in my opinion was excellent and I think I can speak for everyone else by saying the same for them.
Baked clams & baked loaded potato chips app for the table. The potato chips were stacked about a foot high!
I ordered lobster ravioli and they were so tasty and the portions were very healthy. Nice american sized dish loaded with about 10 pieces and chunks of lobster meat laying on top. They defiantly did NOT skimp out at all. Others at the table order fish & chips, steak sandwich, Texas toast grilled cheese and swordfish and said it was outstanding.
Everything was so good and I could hardly breath but when our server suggested dessert we all sort of looked around and smiled because we all wanted it lol! I got a cannoli (which really isn’t up my ally but I wanted to try it) and yet again, knocked out of the park! It arrived as TWO crispy waffle cones half dipped in melted chocolate rolled in candied nuts on a plate overflowing with cannoli filling accompanied by whipped cream and strawberries on the side. Naturally we also ordered an apple crisp and it was decadent! Warm and flaky and not to cinnamon-​y.
Over all the service was great. Our table was fantastic with a beautiful view. The food was extraordinary and I will happily recommend Schaefer’s to anyone looking for a nice night out.

Went here for my birthday in April with two friends, on a Wednesday evening.
It looked pretty good inside: cloth-​covered tables with some sort of view of the water and a slightly large reception area by the bar, which I’m guessing is where they sometimes hold events; the bathrooms were also really clean and nicely decorated, which is a good sign.
The food was in between mediocre and great. Wait service? It was eh. They messed up our orders, took a while, and showed some kind of tension/​conflict between the waiter (s) and food runners in front of customers.
Overall, I don’t think the place is worth the price. Sooo, like many other reviews, I’d say this place is indeed «meh.»
