If I could give it no stars I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to do so. My partner and I went there yesterday and left sad, still hungry and felt a little taken advantage of. Food took forever to make. Not a big deal. I’m a patient person, I can wait. But now I just feel like an idiot for waiting that long for what we got. First off, nothing on the menu has a accurate description of what it actually is that you’re getting. Our Pupusas were little to no meat pureed to liquid with what was obviously a bag of frozen mixed vegetables. I can’t eat corn, or peas and if it had said that was what was in it on the menu I wouldn’t have bothered ordering from here. It was bland, completely tasteless and overpriced. We ordered a bunch of things and we just ended getting an assortment of what they heard through the window and decided to make what they wanted for us. We won’t be going back.

Currently, my favorite cart at the mercado. Definitely try the bean and loroco pupusa. Sooooo delicious!

I love this place. Would be five stars, but I was given the incorrect order(I ordered two pupusas with beans, but received one with meat and one with loroco). Their pupusas are great, the service is friendly and fast. I have recommended this to others!

After visiting El Salvador four years ago, I have been in search of authentic and delicious pupusas so my standard are really high. When the Mercado opened blocks from my house offering a variety of Latin cuisine, I had to at least try 5 Volcanes Pupuseria. I am surprised that they didn’t offer a combination of bean, cheese, and meat in one. They had chicharron, pollo, frijol, calabaza, or loroco separately. I ordered one chicharron pupusa and it was made-to-order. When I picked it up for the window, the guy asked if I wanted the curtido(pickled cabbage slaw) – of course! That is what makes pupusas amazing. Unfortunately, their version lacked flavor and was watery that my pupusa got soggy. I could’ve use some more hot sauce on top. My favorite is still from the lady that sells $ 1 pupusas from a cart on a shady street corner near MacArthur Park.

This is an easy 4 stars, Great food, it takes a bit to make but the flavors were great. I had the chicken(of course, I always have the chicken) It was worm and moist, and almost as big as the plate, Pupusas here(probably elsewhere to but I have only had here) have three very thin layers. The 2 outside are(I am guessing here) corn moist and seal on the edges making eating easy. inside is a thin layer of meat and veggies. I got the meal which has 2 for $ 6 with a Pepsi $ 1.5 which I was surprised to see was the glass bottle from Mexico made with real cane sugar(according to the label.) The meal came with a coup of something that seemed like a cole slaw kind of thing and with a tomato salsa I had to pass on both but the pupas were very good and savory. I will be back!

Delicious and reasonably priced! I’m coming back for sure! The pupusas were fluffy and filling, and the chicken sandwich I ordered was full of cucumber, radish, tomato and mayo on a big baguette. A new experience that I definitely want to relive again and again!

I had been promised a pupusa on a date one time, but it turned out the place we went was closed. So no pupusas that day. And when eventually there were no more dates with that dude, I kinda thought my pupusa window had closed. O, me of little faith. Turns out the Portland Mercado is maybe like 5 blocks from my house. At first, I was like: eh, OK. I’m not a big latin-y style food person in general. So I’ll give it a whirl, but don’t expect me to be sold. And then I saw the pupusas sign. Out of overwhelmption(I still think that should be a word) and going purely on the recommendation of a dude I used to date, I took the pupusa plunge. I’m so glad I did. Star 1: 5 Volcanes. The name appeals to the total geology nerd in me, plus it’s a local reference, I think, right? Four active and one extinct? Google says it might be an El Salvadoran thing, but I’m claiming it. Anyway, for starters, these people are awesome. 5 Volcanes, 5 stars? Star 2: Three dollars and one pollo pupusa later, my mouth is happy and I am ready for more. Cheesy, mouth-watering heaven on a plate. Star 3: My only regret is that I didn’t bring my own fork. The ones they have are a teeny bit flimsy. But they are a cart that takes cards, so: even stevens? Star 4: It’s on the corner of Foster and 72nd. This is so close to my house. I am gonna be sporting a little pupusa pudge pronto. Don’t judge. Star 5: Petting my ego, I must’ve been brown enough and said«pollo pupusa» properly, because the lady taking my order thought I was speaking in Spanish. If this means I can get more pupusas, you better know I’m gonna learn. Todos sus pupusas para nosotros!

Fantastic pupusas! They were fluffy and flavorful, not heavy and greasy like some we’ve had lately. We tried one with beans and one with loroco. Plus the people were super friendly and even gave us a free taste of the plantain empanada — YUM! Can’t wait until this is a regular menu item, it’s a great dessert!

I LOVEPUPUSAS. The end. If you know your pupasas, then you’ll be thrilled that this place exists — along with the other carts at the Mercado. These babies have a lightly crisp exterior with a moist, cheesy inside that makes them oh so delicious. They’re great at only $ 3 a pop and about the size and thickness of a large pancake. If you’ve never experienced pupusas, head here immediately and get at least two cuz after one you’ll wish you had another to savor after you devour your first. Of course it’ll be hard with so many other tasty options at the Mecardo but you will be glad you had another and maybe wish you had gotten 3. Here’s a guide on how many to get according to me after I’d had 1 Columbian empanada, 1 patacone, and 1 taco: — 1 will leave you with room for another couple small orders from other carts. — 2 may leave you satiated but with room for another couple small orders from other carts. — 3 will be filling but you’ll probably want another because you devoured the first 2 so fast(or maybe that was just me). — 4 will leave you(potentially overly) stuffed and happy. You shouldn’t eat any more food. I also tried the atole with elote. It was a bit too sweet for me, but if you like corn and want a warm drink, then go for it.

Absolutely loved it! We tried the pupusas de chicharron(pork) and loroco(flower, yes I do mean flower and not flour). Delicious. I was also pleasantly surprised with the selection of drinks including Jarritos, horchata, and my absolute favorite, ATOLE! Yum! I will be back!
