I took my boyfriend to this place for his birthday for dessert and he fell in love right away. He is a huge pastry fan and is very hard to impress. I got their brownie w/their soft serve and it wasn’t my favorite. It was really rich and way too dense. I loved their pies though, my favorite being their lemon cream pie. It’s so creamy, but super lemony and tart. I love taking my friends to this place, their stuff is really great!

I went here twice during my last visit in Portland. I love their soft serve! I got the«swirl» which consists of both vanilla and chocolate. It’s not too sweet which I like. I also tried a bite of some of their cakes that my friends were having and they were delicious! I liked that they were open late, I think it was 9 or 10pm. At any rate, that’s later than a lot of places. It’s a really cute dessert treat shop. It’s located on a cool street with other cool restaurants and shops so it’s nice to have the option to walk around and try other food or stop back here for dessert. I will definitely return here when I visit again.

The baked goods rotate but that shakes remain the same which is key in my Book. Best vegan shakes in Portland and the mini cakes are death by chocolate

I’ve recently been to Back to Eden twice in the past few months, and it doesn’t matter if you’re gluten intolerant or not. The few things that I’ve I’ve tried were amazing! BF picked up a cinnamon roll and orange scone back in February and brought them home for a breakfast surprise. I was hesitant at first, because they were GF, but after one taste, that hesitation went completely away. Delicious! No weird taste at all, I couldn’t even tell that they were GF. We went back about a month ago and got two of their mini pies — lemon meringue and mixed berry, and I also got one of their oatmeal whoopie pies. Both of the pies were really good, but I really loved the whoopie pie. It was soft and chewy, and just heavenly. I then went back this past week to pick up a few items to take to a friends house for her aunt, who is gluten intolerant. She was so happy and loved the cinnamon roll and orange spiced doughnut that I brought. The prices are a little high, but completely worth it. Put this little GF bakery on your radar, if you haven’t already. We will definitely be back soon!

Vegan soft serve ice cream, miniature cookies ‘n cream cakes, raw lemon bars, savory pies… the deliciousness just doesn’t end. Everything I got was delicious, and was shared with my omnivore friends who also loved it!

I love this place! This was a last minute stop and I’m so glad we did! The girls that work there are super friendly and awesome. We decided on the lemon matcha cupcake, a white choc almond cookie, and the pb&jelly woopie. The cupcake was honestly not that good to me but it could have been my preference. My boyfriend really liked the cookie. And I was INLOVE with the woopie. I would go back for that plus to try all their other goodies. Highly recommend this place :)

The soft serve vegan ice cream is the only one I know of, and there are so many treats to choose from. For the most part I love this place, buuuuuuut here’s my gripe: I have noticed every time I have a treat there, not every treat, but most. There is way too much sugar. I am not a person who has a problem with sugar, I eat plenty of sugary treats but I literally get a canker sore and a stomach ache almost every time I eat there. I usually get muffins as they are tame, but I can no longer do their ice cream. I just notice a massive difference between other vegan bakeries and Back To Eden. Their sugar content is out of control. So I thought I might try their biscuits and gravy– no sugar there right? That is correct, however there was a ridiculous amount of salt in that which left my tongue in complete shock. By far the saltiest thing I have had in a while. It also tasted like soup and not like gravy. Part of the reason I am vegan is to be healthier but with the amount of sugar and salt in their products I can’t safely say that their food is healthful. You eat there long enough and you’ll end up with hypertension and diabetes. I would like to eat there I really would but I think I am done until I hear something about a reduction in sugar and salt. I realize they offer products made with sugar substitutes, but I don’t want that. I just want less sugar, and less salt. That’s it, going to tend to the sores in my mouth now.

It’s a small, cute little place. Cozy. Everything in their case looks wonderful. I stopped by with a friend on a Sunday around one. I specifically came for the vegan, gluten-free biscuits and gravy. I asked the girl at the counter if the gravy had fake soy meat in it, and she said no, but would I like to add some walnut sausage on top? Here’s the deal: I’m weird. I’ve never cared for hamburgers, but I love beet burgers. I’m not a cheese person(at all), but cashew cheese thrills me. I’m not a vegan, either, I just don’t like actual sausage. But, walnut sausage? That’s freakin’ scrumptious! I loved the gravy. Thick and savory with a fresh herb taste. The biscuits had pretty good texture; I like them a little more dry and dense, but, maybe I’m even more weird. My friend let me have a bite of her donut. It was beautiful. Something with cardamom and something else. I was tempted to buy scones for later, but I had a moment of self-control. I’ll be back for those next time, if I can pause my biscuits and gravy craving.

This bakery amazes me. I first went in and got a couple of their quiches for my husband and I to try(being die-hard fanatics of quiches and all). I felt a little skeptical knowing they were vegan, but enjoy lots of vegan foods so I was curious. Once we had that first bite, it blew our MINDS. I came back a second time, this time to their food cart on division. I ordered a blackberry pear crumble pie. It was only then that I found out everything on their menu was GLUTENFREE and by that point I was so amazed I couldn’t even believe it! NOWAY was the amazing quiche I had last week not only vegan but gluten free too! Wow, just wow. This place does some spectacular things and I cannot WAIT to try more! Thank you!

A quaint place with treats left and right(literally!). The ladies that were here the day I came in were plenty patient. I didn’t realize everything here is vegan, so that was a nice surprise! Boyfriend and I got lots of treats to take home with us on the ride to Seattle. The scones, while on the more dry side, were very tasty. We had many flavors and loved everything we got! Looking forward to coming back.

While we were waiting on a table at a near by restaurant, we walked into this charming place that is solely plant based and gluten free. Stunned by the many choices, we took our time figuring out what we wanted and the girl that was working behind the desk was so sweet in recommending what to try and not once rushed us even though there were people waiting. We got the pizza roll and the savory roll which were soooo good that we could not believe what we were eating. It was crave worthy. With a fluffy flakey buttery texture, the roll was spectacular and held us over until we got our table. We almost wished we had just eaten lunch here instead of going to the nearby restaurant. Both my friends that I was with are dairy and meat eaters and they too thoroughly enjoyed the scones. Vegan and gluten free shouldn’t mean lack of flavor, and this place is a prime example. Wish they had an online store for savory scones so you can ship them to Los Angeles!

I had just got the report back that I have a dairy intolerance. This left me feeling a little depressed because every delicious dessert that I love includes at least some dairy. Then my friend told me about this place and it was a God send! The desserts taste amazing and I never even have to worry about if they are ok or not. Every dessert is completely vegan but you wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference. They even have vegan ice cream! It all comes at a very affordable price and leaves you still feeling great afterwards. I would definitely recommend it to anyone on dietary restraints who is looking for something that still satisfies your sweet-tooth!

I really love this place. It’s one of my Alberta staples. It’s a combination of the ambiance of chill hippie friendliness and the willingness to make sure that you get whatever it is you’re craving. And there are a lot of surprises to be had here. They have foods, soups, ice cream, baked goods and a entire list of goodies that seem to be ever changing and evolving. In the summer there’s a lovely back seating area and in the winter they have a friendly relationship with Townshend Tea(one of my all time favs) next door for both bathroom use as well as table space. The quiche is one of my favorites and pretty much any sweet treat. Take the time to come here more than once, try to hit the off rush hour since it’s a tiny place with no room for a line but well worth the energy.

Prohibition didn’t work in the Garden of Eden … and it won’t work in Portland. No matter how hard I try to resist temptation, I repeatedly find myself caving to the craving for pie. God knows my eyes have been opened to the good(yumminess) and evil(fat, calories) of pie, but in the land of gods and desserts, Back to Eden Bakery is a wonderland of Vegan goodness. My nostalgic search for heavenly pie lured me towards Back to Eden. The bakery is small with just a few tables and seats for customers, but the 100% plant-based menagerie of cakes, cookies, donuts, pies, bars, cupcakes, and treats behind the glass case means dessert no longer is forbidden. I took the seductive invitation to get an individual-size Chocolate Pie and then simply couldn’t stop getting more and more of the vegetarian temptations. As I left with a Chocolate Hazelnut Butter Doughnut, Peanut Butter Toffee Bar, a Boston Cream Mini Cake, and pair of Snickerdoodles Cookies, my eyes and tastebuds were finally open and life(and my waistline) was never going to be the same. Diet lost and paradise found.

I loved their gluten free bagels and cupcakes. I may come back again because I did not appreciate the way I was treated. I brought my service dog with me And they were more worried about the health regulation than what my dog is trained to do. I was polite about it because I didn’t want mention how many ADA laws was broken during my visit. I was hungry and tired. I just wanted to et my bagels and leave. I hope this issue will not happen again because I liked the food enough to come back again. It’s one of the best gluten free bakery I found in the area.

First off, I’m not a vegan but I have been GF for a while and am now DF, which I hope won’t last forever. Because, in my humble opinion, butter rocks and is good for you. The Weston A. Price folks and I agree wholeheartedly on this. Ok, nutritional opinions aside, I am avoiding dairy for now. So enter stage right — Back to Eden! I was slightly dubious about the baked goods but I had a latte(thank goodness for non-milk milk!!!) and a maple scone and WOW! I was going to just nibble on the scone a little bit and save the rest for tomorrow but lo and behold, it was so amazing it had to be eaten right then and there. I’ve since returned and tried the brownie but wasn’t super impressed. It was a bit chewy and somehow lacked a chocolate punch. I also bought a mini bday cake and it was beautiful. So some hits and a miss but an overall WIN! It’s great to know that Back to Eden is there when I need a little GF/DF yummy goodness!

I ate here in October and just now getting around to the review haha! I went on a Sunday around 1pm after church. Only a few people in the store. Limited seating but it’s cozy and I believe they have have some shared outdoor seating. I had the Biscuits and mushroom gravy and an Americano and their super yummy seasonal Pumpkin Whoopie Pie! I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Biscuits and Gravy… The biscuits were alittle dry and the gravy was ok. The Americano was perfect and the perfect pick me up for an afternoon walking The Alberta Street area! And the Pumpkin Whoopie Pie!!! Oh my word it was so so yummy, kinda one of those cant believe it vegan moments but since I’m still getting used to the whole Vegan thing myself, I still have those moments! Over all I would recommend and I have to others and can’t wait to go back and try them again myself!

After a friend brought me two treats from this place for my birthday last year, I made a note to visit during my next trip to PDX. My final stop on my latest Portland adventure, allowing me to go out with a bang. I’ve worked retail for many years, and I know the frustration that comes from indecisive customers taking a while to decide. The lovely employee that helped me had all the patience for my «I can’t choose just one» way of life. The location is small and homey, with something for everyone. Texture was ONPOINT and you’d never guess these were gf/vegan treats. Best $ 25 I’ve spent on sugar in a long time.

Driving back through Portland from Vancouver, I was in the mood to try rhubarb. I was never a fruit dessert lover, but I thought I would give it a try. Unfortunately, the girl behind the counter informed me that rhubarb was out of season. Darn. I ended up getting the s’mores whoopie pie. The boyfriend got the raw lemon bar. I was a little annoyed by this decision because I’ve made him raw vegan lemon bars before. I was hoping he would have ordered the cupcake. The whoopie pie was really good. It was just like a s’mores, only vegan, which marshmallow is not. You got the graham cracker cookie, the toasted marshmallow taste, and of course, the inside layers of dark chocolate. The lemon bar was good, too. It was exactly what I thought it would taste like. I detected a little coconut, but I have done that variation, too. I’m looking forward to my next trip to Portland, but next time I’ll go during rhubarb season.

If you see a review of this place that’s anything less than 5 stars immediately disregard it entirely and never trust the ***** who badmouthed this place. As a vegan who has been clinically diagnosed with celiac disease via blood test I can say that I’ve never visited a better eatery. (here’s where this Unilocal post gets awkward) As a recovering addict I feel obligated to mention that my almost daily cravings for Back To Eden’s biscuits and gravy are often *stronger* than my cravings for drugs. That should frickin’ tell you something.

Came in 12−20−15… Got an oatmeal sandwich cookie, a donut, a cupcake, and a milkshake. The best item this visit was the donut and milkshake! You guys always do awesome donuts, good texture, not too sweet and good flavor! The biggest disappointment and really just kinda shocking was how extremely dry the oatmeal sandwich was and how intensely sweet it was. Also maybe it’s just me but it really seems like the cupcake frosting was also sweeter than before… Your service was wonderful, the young woman who helped us was very sweet and polite!

LOVE that everything is gluten free and vegan. Granola was delicious, topped wit fruit and a good portion. Enjoyed a pumpkin sugared donut that barely made it out the door before being wolfed down. The staff was friendly and helpful. Great selection of pastries and heartier meals to choose from.

I love this bakery! Every item on the menu is spectacular & the coffee is also delicious. There isn’t much seating but I do like the atmosphere quite a bit; it’s creative, quirky & more intimately set up. I love the vintage appliances & all of the décor that adds so much character to the place. The staff was very friendly & patient, even when my mom asked multiple times about the ingredients in the food. Haha

Back To Eden is a gem. They have a nice variety of different types of baked goods(all gluten-free), boast a full espresso bar, AND a large menu of ice cream treats. During my recent visit I had a deliciously comforting hot cider and also ordered a deluxe banana split. For the banana split they were able to substitute the peanuts(I’m allergic) for Dandies Marshmallows. It was heavenly. There is such a variety of toppings and possible combinations for ice cream sundaes that the only drawback to this place is the amount of time it takes me to decide on what to order! I can’t really speak for the taste or quality of the baked goods since I usually end up just going for the ice cream, but they do also have extremely friendly knowledgeable staff, convenient later hours, and a decent amount of seating considering that it’s a small place. I highly recommend it!

Wow! This place is great! My friend has been raving about this place for months and I finally got around to going. I ordered a cup of earl gray tea and an everything bagel with sun dried tomato spread. It was delicious! I am very impressed with the quality. Doesn’t have any funky or flaky features you sometimes get with gluten free baking. My friend got the lavender, peach, and vanilla bean scone. Wow! We couldn’t finish it no matter how badly we wanted to because I had to bring some home for my husband. It was amazing.

I wanted to love love love Back to Eden, but I ended up just liking it. They had a pretty good selection of cupcakes, cookies and pastries as well as quiche. I went for the chocolate pie, whoopie pie and rosewater donut and they threw in a complimentary pb&j cupcake. The texture and flavor of everything I purchased was moist and soft and the flavors were spot on, however I thought that the sweetness factor was a little too much for me which is why I’m only giving them 3 stars. I’d still consider going back again to try a few other things next time I’m in Portland and I give Back to Eden kudos for offering not only gluten free but vegan products as well.

Vegan Pastries? How can I loose. I stopped by this place cause obviously because of the vegan options. I was thinking of trying voodoo donuts & blue star donuts for there vegan donuts but this place made me want to check it out over those other joints or tourist traps. Anyways, this place is rather small, but Im not complaining. Parking is found on the streets not too terrible. This place has a nice selection of vegan goodies. Donuts, cupcakes, tarts, cakes, cookies, even ice cream! I tried the Rosemary pistachio donut & a chocolate hazelnut butter donut both incredible. its $ 3.75 per donut, a tad pricey I think but then again the flavors made up for the price. I really wanted to try more goodies but I needed some save some room for some other eats. I really appreciate the hard work to goes into making vegan treats versus conventional dairy egg infused treats. Definitely its own art to make incredible vegan treats. This place is a must try! remember to check in & use your 10% off coupon. Great for vegan or non-vegans

This place has really gone downhill since the last time I came here, which was a few years ago. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, which was $ 6 and $ 2 extra for sausage. The sausage was just a tasteless small patty, and the ‘gravy’ was thin, and nothing like gravy-more like a mushroom sauce. The biscuits were obviously gluten free(dense and not flakey), but tasted good. I had to add a lot of siracha to make this taste good. Smores whoopie pie had good flavors but was extremely dense. $ 3.25 for a 12 oz weak cold brew, that my barista forgot to make. I politely reminded him that I had ordered a coffee, and he acted like I was burdening him. For making a coffee. That I had just paid for. I regret tipping $ 3. I guess it’s cool that this place is 100% vegan and gluten free, but with those dietary restrictions you can do a lot better in Portland.

The first time we visited Back to Eden, back in August, we had the biscuit and gravy and a cinnamon roll. I’ve had better cinnamon rolls and they made our stomachs weird, so I didnt want to go back until months later when I realized they had soft serve. We gave them another shot and wow, their ice cream is delicious! We had the rocky road once, and I wish it was as chunky as regular rocky road, but it was smooth and the taste was amazing. Then I had some kind of fruity sundae with gummy bears and that was so good. I want to try their floats and milkshakes and everything ice cream related. So, definitely go for the vegan ice cream.

This is a tiny, tiny place. There’s approximately room for 10 people to sit. And it gets crowded at the register when there’s even 3 people in line. That’s just an observation, not a complaint. I picked up a carrot cake for my brother’s birthday, which we were actually combining with Mother’s day. They did a great job fitting«Happy Mother’s Day Ma & Happy Birthday Sochetra» onto a 9″ round cake. And the cake must’ve weighed 10 lbs. It was a dense carrot cake. So if you like carrot cake, this is for you. Although the frosting is not the smoothest(a little gritty), I was impressed that it was all vegan. The whole family enjoyed it.
