Dick Hannah’s VW of Portland

I’ve dealt with DH since I bought my 2012 Golf new there. My experiences haven’t been great, but they’ve been tolerable. I don’t expect much from car sales folk, BUT…
I received a call while in hospital recently, from a guy at DH pitching me a deal on an upgrade. It was interesting timing because I had been vaguely pondering what to do about my car now that I know I won’t need it much longer. I told the guy that I was in hospital recovering from surgery and won’t be driving much longer, asked him if they ever buy vehicles back (the mileage on my Golf is very low). He seemed stumped by the question and said he would put me on hold and ask his manager. I said okay. Then he put me on hold, and after a few seconds the line went dead.
Make of this what you will. I wish I could believe it wasn’t intentional, but I’m not that kind. If it happened by accident, the guy certainly could have called back. I think that hanging up was a vile thing to do.

Terrible used car buying experience. I negotiated a price over the phone for a 2013 VW GTI they had advertised. When I arrived, the car was dirty inside and out, but it wasn’t a deal breaker for me so I agreed to purchase. The sales manager Peter Heintz told me they needed to find who authorized the agreed upon $ 20k price, and asked me if I was sure that was agreed upon over the phone. He acted angry and said he «wasn’t calling me a liar», which is funny because I never once mentioned the $ 20k price since I arrived there. They advertised for $ 21k and he said $ 20k was below their cost. Right. After waiting and waiting and them trying to slip in $ 3,500 of extra warranty and gap insurance, I finally left with the car for $ 20k. I went in with an agreed upon price and my own financing and it took 3 hours. If you want to leave in a bad mood even if you are able to get the car you want, feel free to give them a try.

This isn’t bad place. But the service is shockingly slow. Seriously, it took 3 hours to change 2 tires. I could buy the tires, go on YouTube to learn how to change a tire, then actually change the tires in less time.
And considering that, I will likely go somewhere different next time I need any type of service done on my car. Everything here gets done excruciatingly slow.
In this day and age I simply cannot recommend it.

The service department at Dick Hannah VW has terrible customer service & they simply don’t care. The most recent visit I had for 2 things wrong with my vehicle that only has 22,000 miles on it took over 3 weeks for an appointment. This is the 3^rd time my vehicle required repairs since I purchased it new. The first thing was a broken drivers seat which I had to bring in about 5 times before they agreed to fix it because it wasn’t broken enough to justify replacement. When they did finally replace it, a few months later the back popped off of the seat & you could see where they had broken the new seat back tabs & glued them back on. I was absolutely shocked & furious they would do such a thing. They could clearly see what they did when I took it back in & replaced it again. The manager apologized but I have no respect for them. DONT GO THERE IF YOU DONT HAVE TO!!!

My five star review is only for Cort. He worked his ass off to get me what I wanted. The only reason I bought a car from this dealer is because I was so impressed with his knowledge, honesty and skill. My experience in finance was painless as well.

Honest place which is VERY HARD to find for a mechanic shop.
So I used to have a 2001 Jetta VR6 back around 2009 – 2010 that had the typical engine tick when revving. So I thought to bring it to DJM off airport way. Well, dropped it off and they got back to me pretty quick and diagnosed it as the timing chain guides going out ($ 1,200 job is I recall). So I got scared of the huge repair cost. So I decided to go to VW at 122^nd for a second opinion. Asked a 15 year VW mechanic to listen to the noise. He knew right away that it was the timing runner on top of the engine ($ 120 job). He looked at the coolant and noticed it was green and explained that the green coolant deteriorates from the green coolant and said to only us the VW pink coolant specific for the engine. After replacing this part, sound went away and never had a problem with the timing chain guides for the next 80,000 miles I put on it before selling it.
Recently purchased a 2010 GTI. Got an oil change here, but after it was done I checked the oil, and it was still dark. Brought it back and they redid the oil change and let the old oil drain out a little longer. Didn’t charge me anything the second time and they did argue with me at all. Super nice crew.

Cort sold me my new 2016 Jetta after my 2014 Jetta had been totaled. He was fun and friendly to work with. I appreciated the time he took to explain all the newer upgraded features of my car. If you are looking… Go get a Volkswagen from him!!! Thanks Cort!!!

I don’t write a lot of reviews on Unilocal unless I feel really blown away by the business or whomever helped me so let that attest to how great this was. My old rig bit the dust and it was time to venture into the world of a new car. I tried craigslist and other sources with no luck, so I decided to go the dealership route. I’m the kind of guy to do a ton of research and a lot of online shopping, so I stumbled upon Dick Hannah VW’s website. I had seen a few vehicles that peaked my interest and made an inquiry on one specific one I could see myself driving for many many years to come.
I was matched up with Colby and he was very kind and professional. Colby was knowledgable and helped answer and confirm all of my questions with ease. I came into the dealership and the transaction from the drive to the table for paperwork back to the drive home was a breeze. Everything went very smoothly and I definitely will be back in the future. Oh and I’d love to work with Colby again as it was him that made my visit so easy and pleasant. He even put up with my frugal
ways that some others might have pushed away. ⁶⁄₅ stars if I could.

Visited Dick Hannah a couple of times over the past year or so, mostly for car washes or service. Every once in a while, of course, a salesman would come by and try to sell me a car. I never really listened to them, but James was so nice and not overly persistent that I had to listen to his «sales-​pitch». He’s an awesome guy who doesn’t lie or BS you about prices and deals. His boss Travis also came by just to see how we were doing and if there was anything he could do to help me with my buying-​experience. A genuinely nice group of guys that just want to get you in the car you want for a price you can afford. Thanks!

First off, I’m not very experienced in buying vehicles so I started off a bit nervous. I found a used car that I liked online and inquired about it. I was contacted right away by Colby and he answered all of my newbie questions and was very nice and knowledgeable! He told me to come to the lot and check out the car and that we could figure out financing and he could help me along. I came in and Colby was extremely helpful in figuring out the best decision for my lifestyle.
I had always heard that going to a dealership was an all day experience, but it was actually quite quick and painless! We signed paperwork and i was ready to have my new (used) car! Thank you Colby and thank you Dick Hannah!

So, I recently had a service appointment with my Volkswagen sport wagon TDI. What a complete waste of freaking time! I dropped the car off at 9:20 AM and didn’t pick it up until 6:15PM because they were not finished… Mind you, this was for an oil change and a routine check up. I am also a loyalty reward member which allows me to get a new set of tires when the tires have worn out. They were aware of this when I dropped off the car. However, they did not get to the tires until 5PM while I am waiting for the car in the waiting room. I am so sick of Volkswagen at this point. If I knew I could get any money out of my Volkswagen I would sell it now and never have anything to do with Volkswagen ever again.
Their service rep was OK but my wife stated that he was mildly rude to her when she showed up to pick up the car and it wasn’t ready yet causing me to come out and pick up the car because she had other appointments to go to.
Overall, my experience with this dealership has not been that great and apparently from the other reviews satisfaction rates are not good. Honestly, I really don’t think they give a fuck.
In light of everything that’s going on with Volkswagen you would think they would be bending over backwards to make sure that they gave you a good experience. My friends own a Porsche and the other ones own a Mercedes and the customer service and those dealerships is amazing from what I understand. It would be nice if Volkswagen could even perform at half that level. This dealership is a bit of a joke.

Don’t know why 2 star review here. Just bought a used one here and it runs great and has no problem so far. Not so happy cause they didn’t even have me 1000 off on a 20k plus used car but as long as car runs fine I’m fine.

I went in to have a check on my vehicle and the service folks were spectacular. The Coolant light was on, so they checked my car recall history, checked any leakage, and added coolant since they said the level was low. In and out like a thanksgiving turkey! You guys rock! Recommend anyone to have service performed by them.

«Is it appropriate to ask your salesperson to be your BFF?» That question bathed in my mind a bit before I drove away from Dick Hannah’s in my new vehicle. Rewind a couple hours to me sitting in my house, contemplating whether I should head to Dick Hannah’s in Portland «just to look» (famous last words, always) at a vehicle that had caught my attention online. I called the dealership to ensure the beauty was still available and spoke with James Freelove. He was incredibly helpful and kind, texting me the address of the dealership and sounding pleased I would be stopping by. I know this sounds like a given; but, I assure you it is not. I’ve encountered many sales people who give the impression that they could not care less whether you walk through the door – to them, you’re a dispensable and replaceable potential customer.
So, I made the 25 minute drive to Dick Hannah’s in Portland. I walked into the dealership and was immediately greeted with a smile. I asked for James, and because he was with another customer, I was introduced to Cody Russell (the salesperson with whom I wish to be BFFs). Cody is a young, energetic, friendly man. And while he’s young, do not think Cody is lacking in knowledge about the vehicles. Cody expertly showed me the bells and whistles which with the vehicle was equipped, without sounding like he was reading from a brochure. He knew the vehicle and what it had to offer me. I’ve never had a more enjoyable test drive. Cody was so personable, and I honestly felt I was out for a cruise with a buddy – and isn’t that how you want your test drive to go? Don’t you want it to mimic how it would be if you actually drove the vehicle in your «real life» as opposed to some salesperson trying to awe you with every minute detail they know about the vehicle? He was an active listener and readily had more information about the vehicle as my questions came up. I was sold – on my VW and on Cory. What an asset Dick Hannah has in Cory Russell. Do not equate his young age with lack of understanding, lack of knowledge, or lack of experience. He rivals the most seasoned salespeople I have encountered in my life.
This is my first VW, and while I’ve had a Maserati, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes, I’m in love with my new VW and have no buyer’s remorse whatsoever. I could not have had a more positive experience at Dick Hannah’s of Portland, from the first impression with the dealership on the phone with James, to my greeting when arriving to the dealership, to my experience with Cody, to dealing with Philip Brodehl, the onsite Allstate agent handling insurance issues on the vehicles (who is just a sweetheart and a joy), to working with Jeff Salisbury, the finance manager (with whom I could have gabbed all day. His wife is a lucky woman because he is just so easy to spill your life to, so engaging, and incredibly kind). It was really the perfect purchasing experience. Thank you, Dick Hannah VW of Portland.

I leased a 2015 Jetta in May. It was the worst vehicle experience ever. Colby, my sales person, kept telling me it would be 15 more minutes. 15 minutes turned into 6 hours! I was so angry, and about to leave when they finally brought up a brand new dirty car. To this day my car still has pieces of the new car wrap on it.
Also, they promised me a white car. After all that waiting and being late for work, they brought up a silver car and insisted it was white. These people are nuts.
I’ve leased and purchased several vw’s from DICK. This will be my last one.

Typical dealer. Management pushes car sales at all costs. Service pushes repairs and up sells everything they can.
No surprise.
But I give them 4 stars because they don’t disappoint lol
If you know what to expect then you are not offended when they try and sell you a 300 $ inspection on a 27k mile car they sold you new. Nothing personal. Just business.
If u can get over that then they are fine and so is every other dealership cause they are run by humans who do a job to get a check. It’s nothing personal.
Now, if you want someone to look out for your best interest and save you money when you take your car in for repairs and wants to work for minimum wage while they work on your car… then go to a family members car lot. Otherwise this is fine.
You can’t have it both ways people. I’m gonna play devils advocate.
They have a large inventory of new and used cars to search thru, they have a nice faculty to go to and get your car serviced and they have trained techs who have to stand behind their work or its their job.
Those people need a decent pay check and the building didn’t get built by minimum wage works and lights don’t come on from people burning oil in lanterns. It all costs money.
So I will say this to you just like I tell my wife, get over it and move on or don’t buy a new car and get pissed if they charge you a profit.
Or go haggle on 82^nd with the gypsies for a used car and have their mechanics work on it. I’m sure they will save you money, tell you what you want to hear to make you feel good about the decision you made to do business with them.
You Can’t have it both ways and you can’t expect to own a nice car with a shop to stand behind it and the work they performer with out paying a profit.
You don’t work for free or on discounted rates so why should the people inside that business give you a deal on everything under the sun? They don’t owe you anything.
Now if you look at it that way, then dick Hanna ain’t so bad.
After reading that you probably need a hug? Lol
Go see a family member ASAP and quit expecting that the world owes you every thing.

Me and the wife went here to look at several cars they had on the Internet. We were ready to buy and I told my wife this place is going to get a sale.
When we arrived, the young sales associate could not find the keys to any of the cars we wanted to look at. After 45 min of waiting, he gave an excuse that the cars were here but just no keys. I felt like we were just being lied to and decided to leave. Will never be back.

We went to this dealership with several cars in mind to drive them. We showed the website to the sales guy and he said the cars where there but the couldn’t find the keys to them. We are talking about three separate cars. Total waste of time. They are keeping cars on the website they no longer have and then trying to sell people similar cars with higher miles and prices. I wasted at least 45 min of my life here. I don’t like being lied too so I took my business elsewhere.

Apparently my review is going to sound familiar to many others here and I wish I had taken the time to read them first. This place gave my family and I an awful experience. I went in to purchase my 8^th (yes 8) VW. The salesman was polite but gave us incorrect information a few times. I knew more about the car on delivery than he did. Additionally, he and the finance manager repeatedly ignored my wife’s requests to look at and work numbers on a particular model (the one we ended up buying).
This dealer likes to mark vehicles up thousands of dollars above MSRP. I actually worked at a VW dealership (which I left because I had too much empathy to sell cars) who routinely did this on new models. The salesman used to joke about the «idiots who paid that much without negotiating.» I can only assume they probably do the same (though only speculation, to be fair).
During the leasing process I asked about a couple VW promotions (recent graduate and customer loyalty) that would contribute toward the purchase. The salesman and finance manager said they were going to check on them and stepped out of the room. When the salesman returned he said that there was no such promotion. A month later I received an email from VW Credit saying that, indeed, the loyalty promotion had been in place for nearly two months prior to the date I leased my car. Please let me stress this fact, this was not an error; he left the room to check specifically on this then came back and said that, «after checking with VW Credit,» that the promotion didn’t exist. This could have been nothing but an outright lie.
I am ashamed that I signed over money to them and will do my best to ensure nobody I know ever buys from them.

Gosh I sure wish I’d read all these reviews before I went in to lease a new vehicle. NEVER AGAIN. And the only reason I’m writing this today is because I took my vehicle to Armstrong VW which is way out of the way for me, but what a difference that drive made. They were friendly, on point, accurate with their time estimate of how long the service would take and I got my vehicle back almost cleaner then when I took delivery at Dick Hannah.
Speaking of the ‘delivery’ process experience I had at D.H. There is NOTHING like arriving at the dealership at the appointed time to be told that the Sales Person that sold me the car was out (yea he scheduled it for a day he wasn’t there), only to have someone else go thru the paperwork with me, hand me my keys and then show me to the door. What happened to the presentation of the vehicle. Granted I had a Jetta before, however THINGS CHANGE.
I was so hoping to get a VW survey to complete, but I’m guessing they refused to enter my email into the system knowing that it would not be a good survey. That’s right folks, I come from the Auto Industry and never have I been witness to anyone being treated the way I was treated at this dealership. Having worked at Mercedes-​Benz, Smart, VW, BMW and Subaru, it gets ingrained in you how important customer service is. Heck Sales/​Service and often Parts personnel gets bonus’s on the CSI scores. How this place is still in business is beyond me, but never again. From now on all my business and future leases will be with Armstrong VW.
I just wish I could give this zero stars. They don’t deserve the one that I marked.
