Gritty McDuff’s is the original Maine brew pub! It has been a long time since my last visit, but I can guarantee I will be back! The place was casually busy for a Thursday, upon arrival. Service was quick and friendly. I had a Turkey Club with water and hot tea… no beer diet is tough, but I do enjoy the aroma of the hops and the grungy feel of a good olé brew pub! It brings me to Ireland in my mind! Cheers! I will have another spot of tea please. The sandwich was so good I took half home for lunch the next day. I was not disappointed, Great the Day! You can always tell the quality of a sandwich the day later. Gritty McDuff’s has the best sandwich(turkey club) in the Old Port, hands down!

From the second you walk into Gritty’s the smell of the brew takes over. The smell is happiness, the smell is best friends, the smell is coming home. The bartenders are great people and are very attentive. They never charge a cover and are always playing great live local music. The upstairs is great, if you want more privacy sit by the windows or in the back room by the bathrooms. Downstairs is a hidden gem if it’s packed upstairs-you also get a great vantage point to people watch. Aka it’s great to watch people try to walk on cobble stone after they’ve had a few.

This chill pub was exactly what we had in mind. We are visiting and landed at midnight. We quickly rushed out to check something out before all the bars closed. The area was packed with people, but when we walked inside here it was nice and chill. The locals working were very kind and hospitable. I liked the copper bar top and their own brews were very good! I was quite impressed! We did not eat, unfortunately bc the kitchen had closed. This was a good start to our trip.

Love this place. We sat in the bar on New Years Eve and had a great time. The bartender was awesome, super friendly and attentive even when it was busy. The food is really my favorite part though. They had a vegetarian chili that was amazing and the chicken stacker sandwich was absolutely delicious. All three of us ordered it and all three of us absolutely loved it. I will definitely be back the next time I’m in Portland!

Beer was good even found Rickers cider on tap. We ordered wings and poutine. Fries were way over cooked, hard actually. The cheese curds weren’t melted. So skip those. Family thought the wings were good. If you like tons of sauce this will do you fine. If you prefer less sauce let them know. Comfy atmosphere.

Loved this place! Great laidback atmosphere. Great food, great beer. Although they were out of the meatloaf, the burgers and pub steak sandwhich was fantastic! I would come back again

During a recent November trip to Portland, we discovered Grittys as the exact option we were looking for: walkin option, wicked casual, offering flights of beer and some charm! The flight was perfect, offering nine samplings of Grittys brewskis. I’m not a big beer drinker but there’s something about a flight! What better place to have one than Portland Maine which has a multitude of well known breweries and many smaller micro breweries such as Grittys . Several of the beer offerings were above average. I really liked their Black Fly Stout! The food was good along with a great pub like atmosphere. I had a pretty good burger and chowder. Hubby had a lobster roll chowder combo which was in the small side but exactly what he was looking for. Above average pub food that hit the spot! We sat across from the bar and I was mesmerized watching the mug club system in action! Lots of regulars stopping in after work enjoying their favorite brew! Gritty’s was a great find!

Nice bar! Self seating anywhere. There’s no drink menu, but they have their drink specials on the wall. The waitress pretty much said they have everything, but it would be nice to have a menu to list popular drinks that they have. They didn’t even have the beer flights listed anywhere. Thank goodness for Unilocal because I had to ask for the beer flights. The beer selections was ok. If you like IPAs or very hoppy beers, this might be good for you. I just ordered the flights of beer($ 18) and the pork fries. The pork fries were good and the maple sour cream was a perfect creation for these fries.

I was expecting Gritty’s to be a bit more of a dive, but it’s actually a pretty nice brew pub. The picnic tables outside in the back by the alley are great and actually allow for some nice people watching. They also allow good dogs there. The beer menu isn’t huge as all are brewed on premises, but those they have are good, especially the specials. The Halloween ale was very tasty. The food is also surprisingly good. The bbq pork with cheese on sweet potato fries were divine. Service was good and very attentive even outside. Great place to visit for a beer or food when exploring downtown.

I have been to Gritty’s twice now since my last review and I’m glad I’ve given the place another chance. I’ve found that if you sit at the bar you get great service. Both times I ordered the chicken stacker sandwich with sweet potato fries and both times the food has been excellent. My mixed drinks were served promptly and I was a happy camper. The bartenders have been great and checked on me often. Definitely sitting at the bar from now on.

Stopped in for an early dinner and ordered fried pickles, which were excellent, a Ruben which was unfortunately greasy with little to no sauce and sauerkraut and a Blueberry Blonde that was noticeably warm… The bartender said«OH» that’s it… Yeah I’m not from the area but hey I’m calling this as it was served to me. This place is a touristy goldmine, I’m sure but when you brew you’re own beer you should also know what temp it should be served at.

Not bad at all for a tourist area brewpub. Had a very decent meal, a blackened haddock burrito, and a couple of pints of their seasonal brew, the Halloween ESB. The bartender, Caitlin, made the vibe very comfortable. Overall, a good cut above the usual let’s stick it to the visitors. Recommended for sure.

Gritty McDuff’s from a non-locals perspective is your average chain brewery. Although you wouldn’t know they’re a brewery by the name, they do brew their own beer. I recommend going DOWNSTAIRS to check out the«brewery» [not sure it’d be possible to actually brew in the tiny space, but it’s SUPER quaint!] Also, the downstairs bar wins over upstairs! Not only is the atmosphere more inviting, but it’s quieter and definitely looks a lot newer/nicer. The beer I tried was pretty mediocre, so don’t go if you’re expecting great craft beer. I think Gritty’s is more of a group setting or college days spot. You’ll be awed by the hanging mugs on the wall above the bar for about a minute or two if you’ve never seen it before. Wouldn’t put this on your«put stop» spots of Portland.

We had a nice meal here. I’m allergic to gluten and this place offers gluten free buns, which is always nice for me! The food was very tasty. They had lobster tacos everyone enjoyed(not gluten free unfortunately). Also, they allow dogs to sit in the picnic table area in the back; these tables are first come, first served. We were there around 6pm and didn’t have to wait very long. Though I would say our server was professional, she wasn’t necessarily the friendliest; I don’t thinks he smiled once. Also, it took a long time for her to come outside sometimes. This restaurant may want to think about designating one server to the outside area when it’s busy. She would disappear for long periods of time into the restaurant. But that’s really my only complaint! Because it’s first come first served with seating, don’t come with a big group.

Cool little brewery in Old Port. As the name would suggest, it is a tad gritty. Your classic hole in the wall with some decent beers. We went during happy hour where the drafts were only $ 3.

5 stars for nostalgia 3 stars for food 2 stars for atmosphere 3 stars for beer Nostalgia Gritty’s has been around forever, and has really been a local anchor in the Old Port. I remember coming here with friends way back in the day and putting down a few of their ales while hanging out at one of their indoor picnic tables. Gritty’s = good times in my early days in Portland, and will always have a place in my heart(and in my liver). They have cool events that keep the locals coming back like mug clubs(not sure this is worth it when you can find happy hours around town with better prices) and trivia nights, but this place is ultimately starting to feel like a chain. Undoubtedly popular with tourists who are looking for ‘authentic’ Portland. Food Food is fine — typical pub fare. While it’s ok, it’s pretty much indistinguishable from any other pub fare in the area. You’re probably not going to walk away thinking, ‘damn, that was the best _____I’ve ever eaten.’ But I bet it won’t be the worst lowlight of your day either. Atmosphere Laid back and chill during week nights, but this place turns into a frat party on Friday and Saturday nights. Between the deafening band and the inability to move through the sea of 22 year olds, stay away if you’re over 30. Or even if you’re under 30 and have any common sense at all. Beer Not mind-blowing but not horrible. I do like their Black Fly Stout and their Christmas Ale, but everything else is forgettable — especially relative to other beer options just a block or two away. I feel like Gritty’s has just maintained the status quo with their beer and haven’t tried to improve over the years — as a result, every other brewer in the area has essentially passed them in breadth, depth and quality of beer. Still a good place to pop in every once in a while!

This is my second go at Gritty’s, and Again it’s just not worth it. Tonight, I had their IPA… which is a far cry from an IPA. Bland, no character, lack of anything that would make you think it’s a member of a craft beer family. The food, was over cooked, tons of grease, no flavor and not even worthy enough to be considered pub food. Why 2 stars then? Service. The service was good, maybe even great! The bartender and servers all had smiles, looked like they enjoyed the place and were awesome.
