Guapo Comics and Coffee

5 Stars for what used to be, but this place is CLOSED now :(

I’ve filled my fair share of stamp cards at Guapo over the last year or two. The coffee has been consistently delightful for the last couple of months, but I have had a few bad pulls/​scorched foam in the past. The comfortable atmosphere and friendly staff kept me coming back, though. I would rather have a disappointing cup of coffee in a good coffee shop than a good cup in an undesireable coffee shop. Even if you’re not interested in the comics this is a comfortable, laid back place to get a cup of coffee and sit around a bit to enjoy it.

I don’t know a whole lot about comics but this place let’s me use their wireless Internet, plug into their outlets and they have great coffee and vegan food options (also bagels, milk shakes, donuts and sandwiches). The people that work there are always nice to me and seem friendly and helpful to everyone else too. The comic book guy from the Simpsons absolutely does not work here! Their seating is really comfortable, they have board games and a chalk board wall for kiddos. The music playing is usually pretty good and not too loud to have a conversation over. Though I try not to abuse it they make it feel like they don’t mind it if you hang out a while there.

What a fantastic place! Awesome atmosphere, great bold colors and a fun bathroom even. The comic book selection seems well rounded, and of moderate size. Sufficient outlets and wi-​fi, friendly staff, and have always had the comics I’ve been looking for. (I was confused at first as to how they were organized, which is by book title — I tend to look for author more than title so that was a little difficult for me.)
Great place, and their spinach salad is superb! :)

I’m a fan of the comic shop. Great selection of graphic novels, neat locale, and right next to my house. Everything to make it a 5 star comic shop.
The coffee, however, is terrible. It makes Starbucks seem tasty. Horribly over-​roasted drip — to the point I didn’t want to try anything else they offer. Minus 2 stars.
BUT — Eggo waffles with nutella and banana!!! Yes please! Add a star for that sole menu option.
All in all, I will buy comics/​GN here, but will be getting coffee elsewhere.

My day always gets better when I stop in at Guapo. The friendly staff, the whimsical toys and greeting cards, the comics, and the café are great.
I like to get breakfast sandwiches with hot tea on my way to work. It helps me not strangle myself at the office and I believe that even my co-​workers appreciate the shop too.
The drinks aren’t overly sweetened. Thanks God for that!

Comicbooks and coffee all in one place?! Oh baby, the way you do the things you do. With your great selection of zines and work by local artists I can’t get enough. Got to say that snicker mocha was sweet and strong. And the outdoor tables are super cute too. A few hours on a Saturday afternoon and I felt like I had a mini vacation. Also the comic guy new his stuff, and was able to point out a couple of books I had to buy once I told him what I liked it. I’d give you a hug but I don’t want to spill my coffee.

Guapo rocks! Consistently one of the best chai latte’s in town, fabulous people, sweet service, donuts! What else is there in life? For my money, this is the place to be in Foster/​Powell.

This place has all the glory of a really great book store — easily accessible coffee, tons of great reading material, and a comfortable place to sit down, kick back and lounge for a bit. I love all the bright, friendly colors in the space — I love the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.
I was there recently for a Stumptown Comic Fest kick-​off party, and the place was packed. They were offering up free beer and snacks as well. I made sure to purchase a comic book or two (gotta show support/​love) and while doing so, made an inquiry about another book I wanted to pick up. The lady at the counter — even though there were a couple people in line behind me — physically went to go scout it out and explain their «new comic shelf» system to me.
That’s pretty excellent service, if I don’t say so myself.
Unfortunately — they close a bit to early for me to make them an afternoon stop, and I’ve opened a box at a location that is off my work route. But I would certainly stop in here on a weekend for a drink and to browse their collection.

We went for a comics reading for Stumptown. My boyfriend did a reading in 2009, Jason Martin-«Laterborn» comics. So this place has a lot of memories for him. I joined him this year for the reading. Before they had cookies and other treats. Tons of hip kids all over the place. A girl approached me to just talk, I found the cool and it made me feel warm inside. I like it when people can just be nice. The owners of this place don’t really make much profit, they are in this for their love of comics. I heard they work two jobs to just pay the rent. If you are a local come by and give them your support.
Trust me this place is much warmer than some of the Bay Area comic stores of California. Love your Guapo. Cheese

I like my comics like I like my coffee, easily obtained and with lots of splashy visuals to grab my ADD. Alright, so maybe I actually like my coffee with cream and sugar (I’m vile like that, I want sugar. deal with it.) but it never occurred to me that I was missing a side of comics. Guapo has proven me wrong.
I’ve been driving by this place for months and finally, a friend and I made it a mission to explore. I expected a lot of novelty, a little oooh and aaah, rejoicing over a combo of fun things and then never returning. I just expected the awesomeness of coffee and the glory of comics to cancel each other out. Happily, this was not the case.
Guapo manages to be both a cute coffee shop (with good coffee) and have enough of a stock to bring some comic nerd respect. A great staff and an even greater environment, this is just a good place to hang out and kill an afternoon.

This place has it all! The tables are covered with pages from comic books which is nice to look at while you’re sipping on a delicious vegan mocha made from almond milk (the also have soy and rice milk). Their vegan mocha selection is pretty amazing, the «snicker» and «peanut butter cup» ones being my favorite. There’s always good art on the wall and some really cool robot paintings in the bathoom!
Just past the coffee shop area is the comic book shop which is small but well stocked and very nicely organized. I was most impressed by their zine and small press comic section which almost rivals Reading Frenzy in variety and number of titles available. Half size and quarter size/​mini zines are very well organized and displayed to make browsing very enjoyable.

Bf and I were in the neighborhood and comics and coffee sounded good.
the counter help was still very laid back, but I did find a few things on my list this time around.
the barista was great! the pumpkin pie flavoring in my latte was horrendous (why I ordered it, I have no idea) and she happily made me a new coffee w/​o the nasty stuff. her coffee making skills were excellent and her attitude lovely.
will go back again when in the area.

Apparently, this is the hot spot for Sunday post-​brunch loitering.
I gleefully strutted out of the store, with my dinosaur, zombie, «Y the Last Man», and «Alice in Wonderland» comics in tow. Yey eclecticism!
If ever I won $ 1000 and was forced (FORCED, I say) to spend it all on gluttonous entertainment, I could easily kill the bills at Guapo.

Uh — why haven’t I found out about this place sooner?
I admit, I probably only have myself to blame. The coffeeshop is located a little far down from the rest of the «world» so I very wrongly assumed it might be a little sketch. I can admit when I’m wrong. I’m sorry Guapo, for judging you before we were properly introduced.
Guapo is worn in enough to be comfortable, but brightly colored and well lit to give off a clean and happy vibe. The baristas are super friendly and make a cup o’ joe that may even beat out Sweetness Bakery’s. Oh, and for the comic nerds — there’s an entire store in the back.

My favorite coffee shop in Portland! Really friendly baristas, speedy wifi and strong dark coffee. They also serve a tasty thai iced tea that sends me to a a good sugar coma. mmmmm.
Also the thursday late morning/​afternoon barista is very easy on the eyes…

coffee shop in Fo Po!!! Have yet to spend much time browsing the comics and cute stuff cause I have always been so busy stuffing my maw with voo doo donuts and perfectly made triple shots over ice. Always received timely service and great conversation.

4 stars for concept, 2 stars for service. Sooooo slooow! There was one barista, and since everyone in my group ordered drinks and food it took forever. We all hovered in line awkwardly since she was making everything one at a time.
But I do love this place. It’s the perfect combination. It’d be nice if they had a few «community» graphic novels lying around to read in the coffee shop area (maybe there were, I just didn’t see any when I was there).

Great Coffee, good reads, great people
This place is in my neighborhood, so I go here all the time. Always have a good chat with local folks here. I think this coffee shop along with a couple other business on Foster are making the neighborhood much more livable. Yay!
