Jantzen Beach Supercenter

I remember when this used to be a mall, now the property is a collection of big boxes. They carry all kinds of stuff here, Its just huddled on I-​5 on the river luring Washingtonians across the bridge to shop with no sales tax.
It’s not pretty, It feels like you need to drive from one store to the next. The restaurants seem to be on the outside edges of the complex, mostly by the freeway.
It isn’t a destination that draws me in. There isn’t anything here that there isn’t a nicer store closer to me, well at least no business I want to shop at. Rather a place I stop in when I am driving past. That said the lot is usually quite full. With mostly Washington plates.

This place used to be an armpit. There were no good stores to waste time driving here for, no restaurants to consider dining in. Fortunately now there has been a huge influx in business and restaurant additions to bring more patrons, and thusly more businesses! I’m glad this shopping center has made this wonderful revival. I enjoy visiting, shopping, and dining!

It may not be pretty, but this center is convenient, and I use it more than I first anticipated. It still looks a bit like a ghost town with its vast, empty parking lot, but the shops are actually places I now frequent: Target, Ulta, West Marine, Home Depot, Panera Bread and Jimmy John’s Sandwiches.
I can’t remember what it looked like when it was a mall with a carousel, but I only came here a handful of times before it closed and reopened.
Could it be more charming? Absolutely, but I’m glad for the easy access without having to travel or navigate traffic.
I upgraded to 4 stars – always clean, lots of parking, and very safe. I’m growing fond of this place.

For a place that was once nearly as depressing as Mall 205 (
), it is certainly nice to see Jantzen Beach back up on its feet again. The revival isn’t entirely complete, but time has birthed new stores and more activity in a mall that so desperately needed it.
Jantzen Beach screams more Shopping Center than Mall, mostly because the businesses that get any human traffic tend to be standalone stores only accessible from the outside. The interior of the mall is not nearly as ghost like as it once was, but a far cry from its lowest point. It is still slow during non-​holiday shopping seasons and no one beyond the venue’s employees are ever here to really hang out.
The reopening was over a year and a half ago and the stores are slowly starting to show their way. There is a Target, Sephora, Lane Bryant, Burlington Coat Factory and Petco for the department stores and a couple of eateries in Panera Bread and Jimmy John’s. The food court is still AWOL and the vintage carousel is no where to be seen.
You will never find easier parking at a mall. Trust me on this one.

You have heard the saying. .“you’ve come a long way!” Well my friends this is true of Jantz en beach mall. They have done a great job with building this area out. Now when I need to study, I hit up panera bread or all my bany essentials at babies r us and target. And if you are a makeup lovet, they have a Sepora now! It’s worth the drive to get hear folks. Trust me

Notice I said shopping center and not mall. Now you can park right next to the store of your choice. When you’re done, you can get back in your vehicle and drive 63 feet to the next store of your choice. Repeat until finished or bankrupt.
I will miss having a food court.
I will trully miss the carousel.
Kiosks will probably go extinct.
On weekends, the ‘Couve gives it the old Putin visits the Crimea treaatment.
In it’s way, it is an improvement over the mall concept.

Decent shopping center. They are really trying. With some of the new businesses coming in: Ulta and Carter’s, they might eventually get to be a really cool place.
Right now? Excellent place right before Vancouver to go when you want to avoid paying sales tax.

Right on the Columbia River and before the Interstate Bridge off the 5 Freeway
This poor Outdoor Mall gets a really bad rap! Originally opened in 1972 they really are trying and I’m pretty confident things will continue to grow.
Businesses that were already here or that have moved in really seem to be taking a gamble as right now things are kind of slow and empty over there, but I’m convinced that with the population boom that this place will eventually get the attention it deserves and all those stuck in that traffic on the 5 may just decide to take a well deserved respite by visiting this great center for commerce.
There are quite a few sit down restaurants here, but I’m not sure if there are any quick eateries… wait I take that back… there is a Jimmy John’s Subs. The property is quite large and fairly empty, but like I said… I’m pretty confident that will change.
Anchor Stores include: Ross Dress for Less, Burlington Coat Factory and Target. They also have Best Buy, TJ Maxx, Staples, Petco, Michael’s, Old Navy, and Home Depot over here as well. The runners of their Facebook page seem to really push the Panera Bread over there. Those that have had Panera Bread seem to either really love it or just think it’s «ok.»
I’d say my favorite eatery over there so far and I know I’m probably going to catch a lot of heat for this, but is BJ’s simply because I enjoy it and it reminds me of California where I lived for over 20 years!

Well its no longer a mall. its more of a huge parking lot for black Friday when all the people from Washington state come over her to save a double buck. The driving on that day for anyone who lives around here is terrible.
There are alot of big retailers on this island but its no longer a mall. No more carousel, not alot of small businesses.
Hopefully something is done to revitalize the mall and hopefully before the Columbia Crossings Bridge too!

I uploaded a photo of the mall sign with a snarky little caption, and ever since Unilocal has been nagging me to write a review. Here it is.
According to Wikipedia, this used to be a huge indoor mall. Then Americans gave up walking, and indoor malls began to be replaced by huge parking lots with a few islands of actual shopping. They sort of did this here, tearing down most of the original mall, but they left a small piece of the original mall, whose main purpose seems to be housing the carousel. Big mistake, since all those empty storefronts emphasize the overall failure of the mall. One expects Mitt Romney to appear and start denouncing the Obama Economy.
If I owned this property, I’d give up on the whole mall thing. The only reason to even have a mall on Hayden island is to provide WA residents with tax-​free shopping. But that role has been preempted by Cascade Station, which is more modern and easier to get to.

Okay, so the Carousel was fast and the kids loved it.
But sadly, this place is otherwise desolate. Imagine empty shopping bags like tumbleweeds dancing past vacant store fronts. I feel I should have to say more, but less is like the mall itself.

The Zombie Apocalypse is already well under way. My God, they’ve COMPLETELY over-​run my old home turf mall, what further proof do you need? Their undoing was having NO GUN STORE in the mall. Future mall developers, ignore this mistake at your peril. Zombies take no priz-​nahs and they don’t answer to no prayers, biz-​notches!!!
Your best hope of survival is if your pimp hand is strong, and you carry plenty of ammo. Keep your powder dry, and stay thirsty for dear life, my friends…
Mall 205, yeah, you’re pretty much a moribund, dead-​man-​walkin’ mutha-f#cka, anyways. Lloyd Center, oh Lloyd Center. Watch out now! Those undead creeps are comin’ fo’ yaz!!!

I’m only here because I work nearby and had time to kill. Mostly empty, this mall is a testament to failed business practices. The carousel is awesome, food court is boring, and most of the store fronts are empty. What a sad, pathetic place!

Dawn of the Retail Dead
70% vacancy. No ATMS in the mall (not even one). Target has now closed off its former entrance to the mall — to get from Target (where there is an ATM) to the mall interior, you have to go outside. Barnes & Noble in the parking lot has been leveled to make way for… parking lot.
Even the big box stores that once kept the place busy have largely shut down. Aside from the carousel in the mall and the Home Depot out in the parking lot, no reason whatsoever to go west of the freeway here.
If you’re feeling optimistic and want to get over it go spend an hour strolling these haunted hallways.

If you enjoy misery, or if you hate yourself and your life, or if you feel like you need a strong dosage of depression, then by-​all-​means, go to Jantzen Beach «Super“center.
I worked at the Michael’s there for about a year and I nearly committed suicide, not so much because of Michael’s in particular, but because being in that shopping center is DEPRESS MODE 101. It’s like watching a herd of Unicorns get slaughtered and turned into glue, which is then purchased by impoverished children who subsequently take the glue and sniff it to get high and escape their morbidly-​painful existence.
Seriously, the place needs to be leveled. HOWEVER, if you are out there, check out the nearby trailer park. I’m not kidding. It’s surprisingly wonderful and has an amazing picnic area next to the Columbia river. I was on a lunch break one day and thought «what the hell, why don’t I check out this trashy-​ass trailer park?» and was super-​amazed! Anyways, just a weird side note.
Jantzen Beach Supercenter is HELL.

I remember coming to Jantzen Beach every year as a kid to buy new shoes for school. A lot has changed since then…
I stopped by Target to pick up some eyeliner. A lady pushing a cart down the aisle was talking about her pelvic examination very loudly on her cell phone and to get past me she yelled, «COMING YOUR WAY MISS LADY!» At checkout the lady in front of me was buying a single Marie Callinder’s Chicken Pot Pie, and the guy in front of her was buying a single tube of Pringles.
I wanted to go to Ross to look for something, but the walk across this tiny mall seemed to last forever– it is completely desolate and the music playing faintly over the intercom echoes off the walls. One single person was in there buying a lotto ticket from a store dedicated solely to selling them.
Shopping has never made me sad before, but it kinda did today.
P. S.- the employees at the Old Navy across the street are incredibly obnoxious and a little bit racist. Please don’t ask me how I know that.

Kinda run down over the years. The hobby shop is gone. Dont see any interest in ever going back.

I don’t know where to start. This place is depressing. Most of the stores are gone. I used to come here to eat when I worked nearby but man… most of the food stores are gone and the chinese place and cajun place were being run by one person. The girl who made my latte was friendly in the face of the desolate lanscape.
I came to go to the discount shoe store but it’s gone. I bought some pants at target and peeked at Ross but I could have done that at home.
So yeah I guess if you live nearby it’s worth going to but man. I almost expected tumbleweed.

Yo I’m with Julie B. on this one. This place is all kinds of depressing.
We used to hit up the Target when we lived in NoPo and even there it felt like the unhappiest place on earth.
I guess I don’t really have much more to say about this blight other than if you’re going to be in the area anyway, save yourself a trip to the therapist by finding a little goodness at Norma’s Kitchen.

Master planned shopping center as a mecca for cheap bastards crossing the border to save a few dollars by avoiding sales tax. Other than an historic carousel, there is absolutely nothing unique about this place.
2 walls barely showcase the history of Jantzen Beach and intrigue you only long enough to realize how sad this place has become. (I am a jaded Angelino and as Portland has so much too offer, letting go of Jantzen Beach really seems like a crime to me!)
No children laughing, no swimsuits, no amusement park, no museum, almost no reason to stop. Just a beautiful historic carousel reminiscing about 40 years of lost innocence. Like an old man just waiting for something to happen, its lost here.
But who cares. .. really. Ross, Target and Burlington Coat Factory are the anchor stores and the center has all the RV Parking a materialistic soul could desire. With any luck, one day, it might just become an outlet. .. we can only hope.
Still, for a fifteen minute side trip, you can see one of the largest, fastest 4 row wooden carousels still around.
5 stars for the carousel. A sigh and a tear for everything else.
