Sat in the bar and watched part of the NBA finals. Really great stew and IPA. The clam chowder is really different too with a lot of mushrooms. Yum. Our server, Georgia, is one of the hardest working servers. Great job

Came here for on a random weekday for drinks and it was fairly empty. Ordered our drinks at the bar and sat at a booth nearby. The bartender was very sweet!

Locate Southwest Portland nice little area this place has been here for a real long time I don’t even know how long but a real long time it’s a bit of Ireland transplanted to the fair city of Portland Oregon, Guinness pour the right way you’ll get it here. The menu, a little bit small but go with the bangers and mash and then look above you into the ceiling and you’ll see thousands of dollars that have been pinned up there so I asked the bartender how they do it give him a box and it all goes to charity. I don’t really suggest you coming here st. Patty’s day because it’s a real zoo then but any other time you’ll be a happy camper support this place because we don’t need to go away and needs to be here for a long long time

5 stars for the location and the bar itself, it’s a beautiful space with lots of charm and an old-world feel to it. But probably the worst service I’ve ever had. I had to go ask someone to get my order going after sitting unnoticed for an uncomfortably long time, then multiples of my drink order came, and the food was ok at best(I’ve never had dark meat on a salad???). The live music is always good, but man oh man, kell’s really need to get it together! This used to be a favorite of mine, but this was the last time I will ever come in.

Easily the rudest bartender I have ever had. I asked if they had a micro USB charger(my phone had died) that I could use and was met with a loud«NO!» I asked, «really, no micro USB charger?» I heard, even louder, «NO! DO I HAVETOSAYITAGAIN!?!» I am still floored by their absolute lack of customer service. You would think I had asked for their kidney. These guys, waiters included, are incredibly entitled asses. How they survive in a service industry is absolutely beside me.

This was a great place to get a drink and relax. The Shepherd’s Pie was amazing! My favorite part of night was the cigar celler. A great place to kick back with a Guinness or Marker’s Mark, a cigar, and watch a game.

I’ve never quite loved this place. On the weekend, its just ridiculously loud and the bar can be quite impossible to get a drink from. There has been various times where there is a band and others where there is bag pipes which is deafening. The last saturday I was here, the music was actually pretty decent and everyone seemed to be having fun, dancing in front of the stage and others sitting at tables. But if you’re here to talk or have a quieter evening, this would not be the place. Also, they recently changed the cover charge from $ 3…to $ 5 which is kind of silly If you enjoy cigars, they have a decent cigar bar downstairs which is more of a mellow scene. I dont know this definitely isn’t my first or second choice when going out but its definitely a change in scene.

Come on. This place is the best… going there after the Shamrock run was the PERFECT choice. We dried off after what had to have been the rainiest Shamrock run YET. The Shepherd’s pie was to die for and the owner is seriously the nicest man, accommodating us left and right. Our waitress was top notch. I could go on and on…

I have to give this place 5 stars for their shepherd’s pie. I LOVE shepherd’s pie, but this is the best I’ve ever had. It comes in a casserole dish, which is VERYVERY hot, and extremely delicious. I thought it was absolutely wonderful.

I went here for lunch with a friend today and it was a great experience. The staff was friendly and inviting and the server was quick and efficient. I ordered the BLTC(bacon, lettuce, tomato and cheese) sandwich. It was the best sandwich I’ve had at a restaurant. The flavors blended extremely well and the bread was perfectly toasted. I’m a big fan of french fries and their’s were excellent. Light, golden and not excessively oily. The price was very reasonable and since the atmosphere wasn’t distracting it was a great place to catch up with an old friend =)

Came here for a birthday dinner and wasn’t expecting the food to be as good as it was. I had the bangers and mash and it was delicious! I also tried the shepard’s pie which was delicious as well. I will probably get that next time I go there. We came on a Sunday night so we were able to get a table for 10 right away. However, I have been here before on a Friday and Saturday night and it is busier. Also it is more of a bar scene on Fridays and Saturdays instead of a restaurant. Service was ok. It was loud so the waitress didn’t hear what I ordered so I ended up with the meatballs instead of bangers and mash. But they tried to get me the correct order quickly.

Always love the food and drinks. Great location and atmosphere. Sometimes, it’s a little loud. But it’s pretty cheery. I love the live music and don’t mind paying extra to hear it. I’ve had quite a few different things from their menu as of my latest visit. It’s usually pretty lively during the evenings, so the staff isn’t always the most attentive. I definitely plan to come back.

Love this place! Great Irish stew, and my roast chicken salad was tasty-good. Also their soda bread(you get white AND brown) is the best I’ve tasted outside the emerald isle. Only surprise is the Irish breakfast tea was from TWININGS(I expected Bewleys or Barrys or Lyons). Still, Twinings makes a fine brew.

I can’t speak about the main bar or restaurant, I came specifically for the cigar bar. The selection of cigars in the«humidor»(note the sarcasm quotes) was laughable. Nothing but low end brands at inflated prices and one or two mid-tier options at even more inflated prices. The atmosphere was dive-bar dark and their appeared to be no servers, bar tender, or cigar steward present. I struck up a friendly chat with four people who said they were regulars… And they told me that Portland had nothing close to a real cigar bar or lounge: this was as good as it gets. I walked out after twenty minutes without making a purchase or a word of greeting from a single member of the staff.

One of my favorite bars in Portland. I’ll recommend this to everyone that asks me about Portland. Loved the Karaōke night they had on Sunday. Everyone sang really well and with confidence and bravado. It really showed the true character of Portland residents. Bar is spacious with lots of seating. Plenty of beers on tap. Quick friendly service.

The staff here is very nice and attentive. They did a nice job of helping us celebrate a friends’ birthday. The singer that night even sang happy birthday! I don’t remember his name, unfortunately, but he was very talented and nice. Their beer prices are pretty good and the little food I ate there tasted great! And they had a ton of liquor choices. I had one of their in-house brews and was not in love with it, but others liked their orders.

Henry has thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Kells. Henry feels that this place is frickin legit! Best nachos Henry P has ever had and believe me, Henry P loves nachos. The service was super friendly. Shepherd’s pie was delicious and Henry P also really enjoyed his lamb stew. Henry P was especially pleased with his Kells lager and the dollar fifty he got to magically stick to the ceiling. Kayla is a fantastic server but throws like a girl. HENRYAPPROVES!

This is a great place to take a trip to Ireland without flying across the globe. The front door sets the mood with the intricate woodwork. High ceilings and an open layout make the place feel spacious and comfortable. We were there midweek and enjoyed a great value off of their happy hour menu. The Kells beers were pretty darn good, not the best, but tasty. Sweet potato fries with the chipotle sauce hit the spot. One of us got the half size lamb stew and took some leftovers home! My only regret is that we left just as the music was getting ready to start. Next time I’ll wait until after happy hour and enjoy a jig. oh yeah and the money on the ceiling!!! pretty fun way to donate to a deserving charity. On Kell’s

I’ve been wanting to hit up Kell’s for years. It’s infamous throughout the Portland area and I love irish pubs. This place is a carbon copy of the place down the street that I hated except with worse food and questionable staff. We wanted to try something new prior to a show at Dante’s and thought this would be a good idea. Straight off the bat, we got some pretty bad service from the bartender(rather slow night, despite it being Friday around 630ish), handful of patrons at the bar, we had the whole end of the bar counter to ourselves. Bartender gives us a cursory glance as we are sit down, doesn’t drop menus or ask about drinks — we are talking and I’m looking up something I’m on my phone so it could be giving us some room. Which is fine, once. Second pass, he asks my friend about his drinks and walks away. Admittedly, I’m still looking at the darned phone but he didn’t even attempt to get my attention or my order just walks away. When he comes back with my friends drink and menus, he then asks me about my drink and starts walking away before I’m done. I’m not pausing in my drink order, I’m not taking my time, I know exactly what I want and I have to call after him to come back because I’m not done. We do this at least twice. Impatient dude. By this time, he’s completely lost me — I’m 90% leaning towards not tipping and pissed off. I’m obviously talking smack about him to my companion so when he comes back with my drink to take our orders, he’s done a 180 and is way more solicitous. It’s pretty obvious he was losing me and we both know it hence the 180. I’m surprised, I wouldn’t think most people would make that effort but he did and for that I think he deserves some credit. We order and the food arrives and it starts the turn for the worse. My friend has the clam chowder and the scotch egg and both are off. Weird tastes on both. I(yeah, breaking a cardinal but this is irish nachos so how bad could it be… I’ve had the dumb tater tot version and those were about what you expect so I’m on board with potatoes with toppings. Wish I could underline that. Potatoes. What I get are chips as in potato chips. Sure, they are homemade but if I wanted potato chips, I’d walk to Henry’s. I’d asked about the bacon because there’s nothing worse than either cold bacon or non-crispy bacon and so he assured me that I would get crispy bacon. He(and the chef) delivered. So basically I had(as in what I eat… and I do realize this is largely an incoherent rant review) a handful of chips and way too much bacon. It was a most unsatisfying dish. Not enough cheese, impossible to eat potato chip nachos with topics that just don’t mesh. It’s become a whatever night. Oh and my drink was weak. Like so weak that I almost didn’t drink any of it — a waste of alcohol and mixer and time and money — weak. We did get a cursory how are things but the mound of uneaten food on my plate went unnoticed and unmentioned. The one good thing? 20% off because we did a check-in. Pretty sad for a highlight but that was it.

Walked to Kell’s after the Blazers killed the Cavs. Inside was crowded and we had to wait a little bit for an open table but they had a live band playing Irish songs which made the wait zoom by. Hostess checked in on us many times and pointed out tables that were finishing up so we could swoop in for a seat. After seating we were quickly given waters and drink orders were taken. For dinner I had the shepherds pie which was delicious and my husband had the bangers and mash which was equally as good. Definitely lived up to my expectations and we will be going back when we come down to Portland.

Mixed feelings about this place. As the only available seating was downstairs in the cigar room. My husband and I aren’t smokers of that nature so of course it was pretty unpleasant but we wanted Irish food so can’t complain. Other then not really being tended to properly it was ‘Okay’, but lots of things are okay in life, doesn’t make them acceptable. Food was proper greasy food as we expected but getting a drink was like pulling molars, no ones lining up for it! Needless to say I’m still waiting to be impressed…

Love Love Love this place! i usually hit this place up for my I just arrived Saturday night, and I’m starving Sunday morning for breakfast. Unfortunately, this year, I found out they aren’t going to be serving breakfast on the weekends anymore. I came for lunch and had the bangers and mash. I was kind of hesitant because of the mustard demi glaze, but when I took a bite of my beloved mashed potatoes, I was not only surprised that it was good, it was so good I wanted to order another side. I didn’t though because I wanted to have bread pudding for dessert. The bread pudding was good. It arrived hot and fresh. I am not a fan of raisins, so I picked them out. Some chocolate instead of the raisins would be a nice change, but I get it that they want it authentic. The Guinness Stout chocolate cake is no longer on the menu. That’s a shame because it really is a delicious piece of cake. I get it that the new chef wants to be more authentic in her food, but some things should be left alone on the menu, and the chocolate cake is one of them. Awaiting my trip next year so I can stop in and have lunch again.

This is not a brewing location; physical production is at their brewpub a mile or so away; but this location is easier to get to on the MAX light rail. A rather dark, woody room, with Irish-pub décor approaching the stereotypical. Huge six-tier back bar, complete with a rolling library-style ladder to reach the upper shelves. Televisions showing, not surprisingly, soccer. For lunch, I tried the Belfast chicken curry. This is definitely a curry in the Anglo-Indian manner, with the emphasis on the Anglo. Chicken breast, apples, cranberries, green onions, and French fries(«chips») in a moderately spicy, gooey yellow curry sauce. Pretty good. On the house beer sampler, I tried: — Kells Irish Lager. 4.2%ABV, 16IBU. Medium gold, halo head. Very dry, mostly malt taste, low hop presence, bitter fade with a hint of honey, fizzy. — Kells IPA. 6.0%, 64IBU. Slightly cloudy amber. Weak(for an IPA) hop nose; otherwise pretty much dead-on to style. — Kells Irish Red Ale. 4.5%, 24IBU. Slightly cloudy red-brown, medium head. Caramel nose. Roast malt and caramel taste. — Kells Irish Stout. 4.5%, 18IBU. Opaque black; thick, long-lasting head. Flavor and nose, well, a successful clone of Guinness. — Kells Vienna Lager, a rotating special. Beautiful clear amber, medium head. Weak malt nose. Smooth, well-balanced dry malt and bittering hops. -

I had the best shepherds pie I’ve ever tasted here at Kells. I had a nice lager with it also. The family all gave their«thumbs up» as well. An interesting thing is they have these dollar bills stuck to the ceiling. They told us if you roll up a bill around a quarter, and throw it up to the very tall ceiling, it will stick there, due to «Irish magic.» My son tried it repeatedly and he finally concluded that they tell you that to just get you to make a fool of yourself, throwing rolled up bills at the ceiling.

I’ve been a customer and a fan of Kells for many years, but today at lunch was the first time I tried the Chicken Wrap($ 10) – it was great. On the menu it sounded maybe a bit too complicated, but I was pleasantly surprised, especially by the freshness of the arugula, and it came with chubby, just-right fries too. The Wrap wasn’t heavy(you can add cheese for $ 2 if you want it to be), but it was enormous, so I had half of it at Kells and finished the rest at my desk a few hours later. Service was friendly and efficient, ambience was upscalish Irish pub/sports bar cool. We only wished we hadn’t had to go back to work because we wanted to partake from the well-stocked bar shelves!

Change is the word here. Kell’s. Been a PDX staple for many years and rightly so. There’s a lot of good things here, and if they make a few changes, it could go back to being one of the best. My 3 friends and I met for lunch here mid-week. First and foremost, the food was pretty good, so please don’t let the rest of the review detract from that. Kell’s is a great place to get a decent lunch or dinner. However, some other things will keep me away until some changes take place. Service for lunch was very good, very friendly. To be fair the next paragraph should have an asterik however, because I was told that there was a new chef, from Ireland, who was serious about making some changes. Until I see some, this review stands unfortunately. First issue for me was that it was so dark inside and felt old and dingy. I love the old school pub atmosphere, and after visiting many a pub in Ireland I can appreciate it. However, it just felt like it wasn’t all that clean here. We sat next to the stage, and the carpet is well worn, stained, and not too pleasing. The money on the ceiling to me is a huge turnoff. Makes it look old, dusty, and more of a meat market atmosphere than a nice downtown pub.
The menu had all four of us shaking out heads. It’s dated, bland, and while a decent value, is more about burgers and sandwiches. You would expect a proper Irish pub to have classic Irish food. As Portland’s premier Irish pub, they’ve got a lot riding on their shoulders here. The«Shepherd’s Pie» was really a Cottage Pie, made with beef instead of lamb. They’ve got lots of silly things on the menu like a quesadilla, and ‘Irish’ nachos, which we were told were a big seller. I like that Kell’s has its own beer, very nice, but when I asked if they were certified by Guinness the waitress didn’t know. Being vegetarian, I don’t expect a lot of choices, but the veggie hummos wrap was a nice offering and very tasty, despite its lack of Irish features. I would like to see some staples on their menu. There should be an Irish cheese plate for instance. Colcannon, proper Irish potatoes, soda bread and butter for the table(extra charge would be fine), and some inspired ideas in general. These would be great value options besides fries. Bottom line, if I’m going downtown and bringing friends to an Irish pub, not some«Irish» bar knockoff, it should really stand out. Irish food is farm fresh, very flavorful, and comforting. Why not give people something special? I would easily still keep this review at 3 stars, but being downtown on 2nd, with all the options and competition, my apologies but you should know better Kell’s. I will keep checking back on occasion to see any changes, and then you cannot keep me away.
